Nine dead as militants attack Philippine tourist island Posted: 11 Apr 2017 07:04 AM PDT Nine people including four Philippine security officials were killed Tuesday during clashes with suspected Islamic militants on a popular resort island as millions prepare to travel for the Easter holiday. The incursion allegedly by the Abu Sayyaf kidnap group on Bohol island would be the first on a key Philippine tourist destination in recent years by militants who pledged allegiance to Islamic State fighters and often targets foreigners in the lawless south. Just days earlier the US and Australia warned their citizens about possible "terrorist" kidnappings in Bohol or nearby Cebu island. |

Migrants traded in "slave markets" in Libya, U.N. agency says Posted: 11 Apr 2017 06:02 AM PDT Growing numbers of African migrants passing through Libya are traded in what they call slave markets before being held for ransom, forced labour or sexual exploitation, the U.N. migration agency said on Tuesday. West African migrants interviewed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have recounted being bought and sold in garages and car parks in the southern city of Sabha, one of Libya's main migrant smuggling hubs. Migrants are traded for between $200 and $500 and are held on average for two or three months, Othman Belbeisi, head of the IOM's Libya mission, told journalists in Geneva. |

Kabul suicide bombing kills five Posted: 12 Apr 2017 07:09 AM PDT At least five people were killed Wednesday when a suicide bomber on foot struck near the Afghan defense ministry in Kabul, officials said, in an attack that was claimed by the Islamic State group. "Most of the people killed and wounded were civilians, but we don't know the exact target," interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish told AFP. Islamic State group claimed the attack through its propaganda agency Amaq. |

Toshiba will do utmost to avoid Tokyo delisting - CEO Posted: 11 Apr 2017 03:48 AM PDT Japan's Toshiba Corp will make every effort to avoid being delisted by the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE), the company's CEO said on Tuesday, after releasing delayed third-quarter results with a disclaimer from its auditor. "The decision on any delisting is for the stock exchange to make," Satoshi Tsunakawa said at a press briefing in Tokyo. Such a disclaimer is one of several criteria the TSE can use to justify removing companies from the bourse. |

NASA to announce exciting news about ocean planets this week Posted: 11 Apr 2017 06:01 PM PDT NASA makes exciting discoveries about the universe and nearby planets on a regular basis, but the past few months have produced a particularly steady stream of really awesome news about exoplanets, the history of Mars, and the possibility of life outside of Earth. Now, NASA wants to talk about water. More specifically, the agency is planning a news conference for Thursday, April 13th, to reveal "new results about ocean worlds," and if you're one of the many who is waiting for the day where humanity discovers evidence of living creatures not from our planet, you should be paying attention.
NASA will be using the event to talk about new discoveries made by the Cassini spacecraft as well as the always reliable Hubble Space Telescope. "These new discoveries will help inform future ocean world exploration," NASA says in its press release announcing the upcoming event, adding that the scientist panel will also talk more about the anticipated Europa Clipper mission which will send hardware to Jupiter's frozen moon. Ocean worlds are particularly interesting to astronomers searching for life outside of Earth because the presence of ice and water is a great indicator that a planet can support, or perhaps once supported, some form of life. That makes lots of sense, since life on Earth is thought to have originated in the ocean before evolution pushed it onto land and eventually into the skies. The conference is set to take place on Thursday, April 13th, at 2 pm EDT, and will be streamed live on both the NASA TV website and its YouTube channel. |
Protester in viral photo embraces woman she defended from Islamophobic abuse Posted: 11 Apr 2017 02:50 AM PDT A viral photograph of a young woman smiling as she confronted the leader of the English Defence League (EDL) has become a symbol of resistance against the far-right. In the photo, Saffiyah Khan is seen standing up to EDL leader Ian Crossland during the far-right group's demo in Birmingham on Saturday. Moments before the photo was taken — by Press Association photographer Joe Giddens — Khan had stepped in when members of the EDL surrounded a young Muslim woman. SEE ALSO: British protesters think they've kept Trump out for a few more months Days after the photo was taken, Khan has met woman she defended, Saira Zafar, for the first time, and the two shared an embrace in a video by the Guardian. Zafar explains that she had planned to stand towards the back carrying a placard stating "no to Islamophobia, no to war." But, EDL members at the rally began shouting racist abuse at her, like "you don't belong in this country" and "go back to where you came from." People also placed Islamophobic banners and EDL flags over her face and head. In the video, she thanked Khan for stepping in. "It's very important to have solidarity and to show that if something happens to this person, they're not on their own," says Zafar. |

'Game of Thrones' creator George R.R. Martin is 'seeing red' over United Posted: 11 Apr 2017 02:41 PM PDT Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin gave us the Red Wedding, beheadings, and hordes of killer ice zombies. But even he can't stomach United Airlines. SEE ALSO: People are trolling United Airlines with these brutal new slogans "I don't often comment on current events, but the story about the passenger that United Airlines beat bloody and dragged off a flight — for no reason but to accomodate some of their own deadheading employees, and despite the fact that he had a ticket that he'd bought and paid for and was doing nothing but sitting peacefully in his assigned seat — has me seeing red," the author wrote Tuesday on his LiveJournal blog. Usually, Martin sticks to dragons, comic books, and the New York Jets on his blog, but this time he went after United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz, calling for his resignation. "He's a disgrace," Martin said. Munoz finally actually apologized Tuesday for the incident that was caught on video and triggered outrage (and financial losses) at the airline. George R. R. Martin is pissed at United.Image: Frederick M. Brown/Getty ImagesMartin included a fake ad Jimmy Kimmel aired on his late-night show Monday that dragged United hard. After re-sharing the video, Martin said he was "outraged" by the footage and even more upset by the "mealy-mouthed corporate bullshit" the company and CEO put out. The fantasy author harkened back to days when passengers were treated as paying customers instead of cattle. Luckily, United doesn't exist in Westeros, or it might have to defend itself in trial by combat. WATCH: Here's United Airlines' adjusted 2017 pre-flight safety speech |

20 of the world's most stunning theaters Posted: 12 Apr 2017 05:43 AM PDT From time immemorial, people have gathered around campfires to regale one another with songs and stories. The human yearning for poetry and community has not subsided throughout the ages, but the location certainly has. Shakespeare's Globe in London, England, and the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Italy, are not merely places to see a show — they are gateways to another world that are works of art unto themselves. U.S.-backed forces push back Islamic State in Raqqa campaign - officials Posted: 11 Apr 2017 07:04 AM PDT By John Davison BEIRUT (Reuters) - U.S.-backed forces fighting Islamic State in Syria advanced to within 2 km (1 mile) of a key stronghold near the jihadist group's de facto capital of Raqqa on Tuesday, and a counter-attack by the militants was repulsed, officials said. The multi-phased campaign by the Syria Democratic Forces (SDF), backed by air strikes and military advisers from a U.S.-led coalition, ultimately aims to oust Islamic State from Raqqa. Officials have given different estimates for how long the campaign will take, and the assault on Raqqa itself appears to have been delayed, after one high-ranking military official said it would begin at the start of April. |

Walmart has a new program that’s the opposite of Amazon Prime Posted: 12 Apr 2017 01:35 PM PDT Amazon's yearly Prime subscription is supposed to be the ultimate in lazy shopping: pay an annual fee, and in return order as much stuff as you want for home delivery, thanks to the free two-day shipping. In Amazon's model, you trade a modest fixed fee for ultimate convenience and the wonders of never having to put on clothes and leave your home. But Walmart is trying something different.
Pickup Discount is a new Walmart program that offers customers a discount on items bought online, but only if they pick them up at a store. The discounts vary, but it seems like some items that would be expensive for Walmart to ship (a TV, for example) get discounted by up to $50. That's a good discount, which Walmart can fund as it's saving big-time on the cost of shipping. It also gets you into Walmart, which means there's also a chance you'll impulse-buy a $3 pair of sunglasses, bumping up the margins even more. Not everything gets a Pickup Discount. Initially, Walmart is planning on rolling the program out to 10,000 products across 4,000 stores. However, the ambitions go up from there, as Walmart wants to offer a discount on a million items by June. Walmart is also taking this as a chance to make its in-store pickup system slicker and faster for customers to use. Expect to see curbside pickup and automated collection machines roll out, so that even if you have to go to a store to get your packages, you still won't actually have to talk to anyone while doing it. |
Three dead in murder-suicide at US school Posted: 10 Apr 2017 06:54 PM PDT A man walked into a school in southern California Monday and shot dead his estranged wife in front of her students, killing an eight-year-old boy in the crossfire before turning his gun on himself. Police said local resident Cedric Anderson had checked into the office as a visitor after entering the campus in the city of San Bernardino and going to the special needs classroom, where he opened fire on Karen Elaine Smith, 53, as she was teaching. Officers said Anderson, also 53, had only targeted Smith but two students were caught in the crossfire and one of them, Jonathan Martinez, died later in hospital. |

Risk factors for heart disease and stroke also tied to Alzheimer’s Posted: 11 Apr 2017 08:23 AM PDT By Lisa Rapaport (Reuters Health) - Middle-aged people with risk factors for heart attacks and stroke are also more likely to develop changes in the brain that can lead to Alzheimer's disease, a new study suggests. Previous research has linked so-called vascular risk factors, including obesity, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol and elevated blood pressure, to higher odds of dementia, cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. "Each alone may not be enough to increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease, but having a number of these risk factors appears to be associated with an even higher risk," Gottesman said by email. |
