Nigeria's Buhari absent again from cabinet meeting Posted: 03 May 2017 04:29 AM PDT Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari failed to show up for a weekly cabinet meeting on Wednesday, despite assurances from his wife that his health was not a cause for concern. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo chaired the meeting in the absence of the 74-year-old Buhari, who has now missed the last three gatherings of senior ministers and advisors. Buhari has been under growing pressure to disclose his state of health since he returned from the British capital in early March after nearly two months away. |
Same-sex couple can seek damages from Kentucky clerk: U.S. appeals court Posted: 02 May 2017 12:01 PM PDT A federal appeals court on Tuesday revived a damages lawsuit against Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who in 2015 refused to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples because it conflicted with her Christian beliefs. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati said a lower court judge erred in finding that damages claims by David Ermold and David Moore became moot, after a new state law last July excused clerks like Davis, from Rowan County, from having to sign marriage license forms. While the couple eventually did get a license, a three-judge appeals court panel said they could sue over Davis' initial refusal to grant one, after the U.S. Supreme Court in June 2015 said the Constitution guaranteed a right to same-sex marriage. |

In a country best known for its super-fast "Shinkansen" bullet trains, the emphasis in Japan's latest extravaganza on rails is on savouring the moment, with no expense spared to create the most luxurious travelling experience. After dinner they can gather for a drink around the piano, or sit and soak up the atmosphere next to the fireplace -- actually a trick created by steam and coloured light -- on a journey that takes them from Tokyo to the northernmost island of Hokkaido and back again. |

US cop who killed unarmed black man guilty of rights charge Posted: 02 May 2017 07:06 PM PDT A South Carolina policeman who was filmed shooting an unarmed black man in the back after a traffic stop pleaded guilty Tuesday to unlawful killing while performing official duties, which could bring up to life in prison. The Justice Department said that former North Charleston, South Carolina, police officer Michael Slager, 35, agreed to the single federal charge five months after a jury failed to convict him of murder in the case. "The Department of Justice will hold accountable any law enforcement officer who violates the civil rights of our citizens by using excessive force," said Attorney General Jeff Sessions. |
Toddler accidentally locks himself in car, has a great time getting rescued Posted: 02 May 2017 02:40 PM PDT Fourteen-month-old Brandon Emery unwittingly locked himself in the car last week during a shopping trip with his mom. Don't worry, though — he made it out just fine. And he seems to have had an extremely fun experience. According to CBS News, the toddler climbed from the backseat into the front of his mother's unlocked car while she unloaded groceries at a store in Bude, United Kingdom. After she closed the trunk, but before she got back into the car, Brandon pushed the "lock" button. Whoops. SEE ALSO: People are sharing the weird little things that really annoy their mums Luckily, firefighters arrived quickly to save the day. And when Brandon decided to put a coin in his mouth, they swiftly broke the car window and pulled him to safety — making what could have been a terrifying experience a pretty funny one instead. Brandon, for his part, looked thrilled the whole time. "He was clearly traumatised by the whole ordeal," his mom joked on Facebook. And he got some early driving practice! Nice. 'Drunk' American arrested over Japan flight brawl Posted: 02 May 2017 09:47 PM PDT Japanese police have arrested a drunken American man over a punch-up with another passenger on an All Nippon Airways (ANA) flight, which caused a delay, officers said Wednesday. The man, whose name has not been released, was pulled off the Boeing 777 that was due to fly from Tokyo's main gateway Narita airport to Los Angeles, after the brawl erupted before takeoff. "I will kill you!" the male passenger, wearing a red Hawaiian shirt, is seen yelling in video footage filmed by another passenger, who uploaded it on social media. |
'Really bad' or 'catastrophic': Comey defends Clinton choice Posted: 03 May 2017 02:51 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI Director James Comey told Congress Wednesday that revealing the reopening of the Hillary Clinton email probe just before Election Day came down to a painful, complicated choice between "really bad" and "catastrophic" options. He said he'd felt "slightly nauseous" to think he might have tipped the election outcome but in hindsight would change nothing. |
Poland outraged after Macron comments on Le Pen and Putin Posted: 02 May 2017 06:19 AM PDT By Lidia Kelly WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland protested on Tuesday after French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron named its most powerful politician alongside Russia's Vladimir Putin as the leaders of 'regimes' allied with his far-right opponent Marine Le Pen. The perceived slur against Jaroslaw Kaczynski, head of the governing Law and Justice Party (PiS), follows comments from Macron last week that, if elected, he would urge the European Union to impose sanctions on Poland for violating democratic norms. |

Windows 10 S users will have to pay $50 to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro Posted: 02 May 2017 03:02 PM PDT On Tuesday morning in New York City, Microsoft unveiled a streamlined, simplified version of its latest operating system called Windows 10 S. Unlike other editions of the OS, Windows 10 S will only run apps from the Windows Store, making it speedier and more secure than Windows 10 Pro. It's the company's long-awaited answer to Chrome OS, but there's one key difference between the two platforms.
Any Windows 10 S machine can be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro for a one-time $49 fee. Once you upgrade, your computer will operate just like any other Windows 10 computer, capable of downloading and running apps from the internet. Microsoft can no longer guarantee that your computer will have as long a battery life or perform as well as it did on Windows 10 S, but it's always an option. Additionally, anyone who picks up a Surface Laptop (which runs Windows 10 S by default) will be able to switch to Windows 10 Pro for free as long as they do it before the end of 2017. They're already paying $999 for a new laptop, so it makes sense to waive the fee and let them do what they want. Even with the free upgrade for Surface Laptop owners, the optics for this decision are fairly horrid. Microsoft is trying to compete with Apple's MacBooks and Google's Chromebooks all at once and might finally have a laptop that can do so. Why nickel-and-dime consumers who buy Windows 10 S machines and then realize that the OS doesn't suit their needs? Windows 10 S has potential, but moves like this are bad for the operating system, bad for Microsoft and bad for consumers. |

North Korea says U.S. bomber flights push peninsula to brink of nuclear war Posted: 02 May 2017 06:47 AM PDT By Ju-min Park and Ben Blanchard SEOUL/BEIJING (Reuters) - North Korea accused the United States on Tuesday of pushing the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war after a pair of strategic U.S. bombers flew training drills with the South Korean and Japanese air forces in another show of strength. The two supersonic B-1B Lancer bombers were deployed amid rising tensions over North Korea's pursuit of its nuclear and missile programmes in defiance of U.N. sanctions and pressure from the United States. The flight of the two bombers on Monday came as U.S. President Donald Trump said he would be "honoured" to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the right circumstances, and as his CIA director landed in South Korea for talks. |

Iran's reformist ex-president backs Rouhani reelection Posted: 03 May 2017 12:14 AM PDT Iran's reformist former president Mohammad Khatami has skirted a media ban to endorse moderate incumbent Hassan Rouhani for a second term over conservative challengers in a tight May 19 election. Khatami, who during his 1997-2005 presidency oversaw a rapprochement with the West, has been barred from speaking openly since mass protests against the disputed reelection of his hardline successor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2009. The hardliner's replacement by Rouhani in 2013 has seen a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers that led to the lifting of most international economic sanctions but is threatened by a tougher stance from the new US administration of Donald Trump. |

Maybe Tim Cook should blame the iPhone 7’s three-year-old design for declining sales Posted: 03 May 2017 06:18 AM PDT Apple on Tuesday afternoon reported fiscal second-quarter earnings that were largely in line with expectations. Revenue climbed to $52.9 billion from $50.2 billion in the year-ago quarter, and net profit came in at $11 billion. Second-quarter guidance that missed analysts' consensus estimate was largely responsible for driving Apple shares down in after-hours trading, but another troubling line item offered some cause for concern: Sales of the iPhone, Apple's chief moneymaker, dropped to 50.76 million units from 51.2 million units in the same quarter last year. Chief executive Tim Cook was quick to blame the rumor mill for the continued slow-down in iPhone sales. Of course, there is no question that rumors of a completely redesigned iPhone 8 played a role in convincing some people to hold off on upgrading old iPhones. But there's also no question that something else is responsible in part for slowing iPhone sales, and we all know that something else is the iPhone 7. A narrative formed on gadget blogs ahead of Apple's iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus unveiling last September. Because the new iPhones featured a design that looked just like the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s, many bloggers labeled the phones "boring." Once the new phones were released, anyone who actually picked up a new iPhone 7 or 7 Plus and used it instantly knew it wasn't boring at all. But there's little question that people continued to judge these books by their covers following their launch. Apple took a chance when it decided to recycle the same iPhone design for a second year. Since the launch of the iPhone 3GS in 2009, Apple has trained its user base to expect a fresh new iPhone design every other year. Since 2015 was an "S" year, 2016's iPhone 7 should have offered users a new look and feel in addition to all the new features and upgrades. Instead, we got the same iPhone for a third consecutive year, but with a fresh coat of paint. Well, it turns out that a fresh coat of paint wasn't enough for some customers. "In general, what we are seeing, we're seeing what we believe to be a pause in purchases on iPhone, which we believe are due to the earlier and much more frequent reports about future iPhones," Cook said on Tuesday's earnings call. "And so that part is clearly going on and it could be what's behind the data. I don't know but we are seeing that in full transparency." Again, there is absolutely no question that the rumor mill shares the blame for the continued decline in Apple's iPhone business. The same can be said each and every year. The iPhone is the most beloved consumer electronics device in the world, and people want to know what's coming next. Details begin to leak more than a year before each new iPhone launches, and the iPhone 8 was no different. This time around, however, the details that have leaked so far paint a picture of an exciting new iPhone design made of glass and stainless steel with an OLED display, ultra-thin bezels, and a Touch ID fingerprint scanner embedded in the screen itself. Meanwhile, the latest iPhones sitting on store shelves look just like the iPhones from 2015, which look just like the iPhones from 2014. 50.76 million iPhones is a whole lot of iPhones. Apple earned $11 billion in profit last quarter. The company's cash stockpile grew to $256.8 billion — that's more than a quarter of a trillion dollars. It was a massive, massive quarter. But if you're going to attempt to explain away the continued slide in iPhone sales, not mentioning Apple's three-year-old iPhone 7 design is oblivious at best and disingenuous at worst. |

China tells US to remove anti-missile THAAD system from South Korea amid spying fears Posted: 02 May 2017 04:23 AM PDT China has demanded the US reverse the deployment of an anti-missile defence system aimed at preventing a strike by North Korea on its southern neighbour, saying it could be used as a tool for spying. Beijing says its opposition to the stationing of a THAAD unit in South Korea is based on concerns that it could interfere with its own military operations. The defence system, situated on a former golf course in the southern province of Seongju, has reached initial operational capacity. |
