Isolated US lashes out at climate critics Posted: 02 Jun 2017 01:39 PM PDT The White House hit back Friday at criticism of Donald Trump's decision to scrap a major global climate deal, accusing Europe of trying to "shackle" the US economy and refusing to acknowledge climate change is real. With the United States virtually isolated on the world stage, a string of administration officials went on the offensive Friday to justify the Republican president's decision to abandon the 195-nation Paris deal curbing global emissions. Trump's top climate advisor Scott Pruitt was indignant: "The world applauded when we joined Paris. |

Israeli soldiers keep a close watch, and parts of the city are off limits to Palestinians. |

Pfizer defeats appeals linking Zoloft to birth defects Posted: 02 Jun 2017 11:40 AM PDT Pfizer Inc on Friday defeated an effort to revive more than 300 lawsuits alleging that its antidepressant Zoloft causes cardiac birth defects in children when taken by women during early pregnancy. A panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia upheld the April 2016 dismissal of the cases by a lower court judge, who said the plaintiffs had not shown a plausible scientific link between Zoloft and the birth defects. The plaintiffs accused New York-based Pfizer of playing down the risks to boost sales of Zoloft, which topped $3 billion annually before sales of generic versions began in 2006. |
General leading Philippine battle with Islamists relieved of command Posted: 02 Jun 2017 05:04 AM PDT By Tom Allard MARAWI CITY, Philippines (Reuters) - The general leading an offensive against pro-Islamic State militants holed up in a southern Philippine town has been relieved of his command, an army spokesman said on Friday, the 11th day of the country's biggest security crisis in years. The removal of Brigadier-General Nixon Fortes as commander of the army brigade in Marawi City and his replacement by his deputy, Colonel Generoso Ponio, was not related to the battle that has raged in the city, the spokesman said. "That's not the reason," spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Ray Tiongson said when asked if Fortes' replacement was triggered by the course of the conflict. |

If you’re hoping humans find evidence of life on Mars, scientists have some very good news Posted: 01 Jun 2017 08:04 PM PDT Despite all of the breathtaking photos, video, observations, and scientific discoveries that have happened so far on Mars — thanks to probes, rovers, and the like — there's one burning question that remains completely unanswered: was there ever life there? We've found a wealth of minerals, evidence of water, and even the telltale signs of riverbeds and mud, but evidence of life remains illusive. A new report co-led by Roger Wiens of the Los Alamos National Laboratory doesn't confirm that living organisms took root on the red planet, but it does paint a picture that seems very optimistic. Drawing on various readings from the Curiosity rover, researchers have determined that a lake once existed in Mars' Gale Crater, and the body of water had some extremely interesting characteristics. Rather than carrying a uniform density of oxygen, the water in the ancient lake held dramatically different levels of oxygen depending on the location and time. "We're learning that in parts of the lake and at certain times, the water carried more oxygen," Wiens says. "This matters because it affects what minerals are deposited in the sediments, and also because oxygen is important for life. But we have to remember that at the time of Gale Lake, life on our planet had not yet adapted to using oxygen—photosynthesis had not yet been invented. Instead, the oxidation state of certain elements like manganese or iron may have been more important for life, if it ever existed on Mars. These oxidation states would be controlled by the dissolved oxygen content of the water." In short, the variety of conditions available in the lake at various times during its history could have offered ideal conditions for life to take hold, and that's pretty huge news if you're hoping to one day hear that humans have found evidence that martian life was real. |

Three killed in disputed Kashmir in shelling between India and Pakistan Posted: 01 Jun 2017 03:29 AM PDT By Abu Arqam Naqash MUZAFFARABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - Three people were killed in disputed Kashmir on Thursday when bitter foes India and Pakistan engaged in cross-border shelling, officials on both sides of the border said, adding to simmering tension between the nuclear-armed neighbors. Indian troops last week said they attacked and damaged Pakistani army posts in Kashmir as they sought to prevent militants infiltrating from the Pakistani side, but Islamabad denied the claim. Mohammad Usman, a police official in the southern Poonch district of Pakistan-held Kashmir, said the shelling started in the morning. |
Signs of the time: Fake U.S. immigration control posters found in Washington Posted: 01 Jun 2017 01:29 PM PDT Residents of at least one Washington D.C. neighborhood woke up on Thursday to find the area plastered with posters urging them to turn in illegal immigrants, but federal authorities denied putting up the signs and denounced them as inciting fear. The bogus posters bearing the seal of the Department of Homeland Security warned about criminal offenses related to harboring or helping people in the country illegally, and gave phone numbers to report information about them to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "If you see something, say something," said the flyer, titled "Sanctuary City Neighborhood Public Notice" and written on the ICE letterhead. |
Just a 100 miles from the White House, Tangier Island is disappearing into the sea Posted: 02 Jun 2017 12:41 PM PDT On Virginia's Tangier Island, about 100 miles and a ferry ride from Washington, the waters of the Chesapeake Bay are edging dangerously close to William Eskridge's house. The island is under threat from rapid erosion that is being accelerated by rising water scientists believe to be caused by climate change. Tangier Island is wedged between the eastern shore of Maryland and the Virginia coast. |
Donald Trump Jr leads campaign to overturn restrictions on gun silencers despite mass shooting fears Posted: 01 Jun 2017 07:52 AM PDT Donald Trump's eldest son is spearheading a campaign to overturn restrictions on gun silencers - legislation gun safety activists say has existed for decades for reasons of public security. The country's largest gun rights lobbying group, the National Rifle Association (NRA), is backing legislation that would make it easier for people to buy silencers, or suppressors. Restrictions on their sale were first introduced during the administration of Franklin D Roosevelt, and advocates say the sound of a gun being fired acts as a loud, obvious safety signal for people to take cover, run the way other way or simply be alert. |
