Top US Navy commander in Japan over destroyer collision Posted: 20 Jun 2017 07:15 AM PDT The US Navy's top commander visited Japan Tuesday to meet the grieving families of seven sailors killed in a weekend accident, as investigators probe questions over the timing of the collision with a container ship. Admiral John Richardson arrived at the US naval base in Yokosuka on the outskirts of Tokyo to meet bereaved relatives and officers who served on the USS Fitzgerald. "It's an intimate meeting, very solemn grieving with families, so we're not even taking photos," Commander Ron Flanders, press officer at the US Naval Forces in Japan, told AFP. |

Donald Trump fails to address terror attack on London mosque and murdered Muslim woman Posted: 19 Jun 2017 01:08 PM PDT Donald Trump has failed to personally acknowledge the attack on members of a mosque in London, and the murder of a Muslim teenager in Virginia, prompting critics to attack his silence. The White House has commented on the Finsbury Park attack, saying that they have reached out and offered to help in any way possible. Fifteen hours after a man drove a van into a group of Muslims near a London mosque, killing at least one and injuring 10 others, there was still no note of condolences from the President, the Washington Post posted in an editorial analysing Mr Trump's response to terrorist attacks. |

Israel flouting U.N. Security Council settlement demand: U.N. envoy Posted: 20 Jun 2017 12:16 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Israel is flouting a United Nations Security Council demand to halt settlement building on occupied Palestinian land, while both parties are ignoring a call to stop provocation, incitement and inflammatory rhetoric, a senior U.N. envoy said on Tuesday. U.N. Middle East envoy Nickolay Mladenov made the assessment in his second quarterly report to the 15-member council on the implementation of a Dec. 23 resolution adopted with 14 votes in favor and a U.S. abstention. |
Teen slams hypocritical school dress code in the perfect senior quote Posted: 19 Jun 2017 03:12 PM PDT High school senior Tori DiPaolo is now a hero on Twitter for using her senior quote to fight sexism. DiPaolo's school, West Milford High in New Jersey, bans girls from wearing shoulder baring tops on most days, but the robes required for senior photos happen to show a whole lot of ... wait for it ... shoulder. Tori: 1Dress code: 0 pic.twitter.com/1HHgjg84AE — Tori (@tori_dipaolo) June 13, 2017 SEE ALSO: Rapper/philosopher T-Pain gives student a senior quote and it's glorious DiPaolo called attention to this blatant contradiction with a self-quote: "I'm sorry, did my shoulders distract you from reading this quote?" Let's just say Twitter was here for it. This is the best senior quote ever. You're a fucking iconic ass queen & I applaud the fuck out this shit FUCK IT UP QUEEN https://t.co/29vsd6JALw — Brittany PINNED (@LitLikeBrittt) June 17, 2017 You are an awesome young lady with the world at your fingertips. Never settle and don't let the system box you in. GL — Angel Valdez (@GiJoeValdez) June 16, 2017 yo Tori, this is hype a/f. I applaud this shit — Nik Latrone (@NikHasTricks) June 17, 2017 It really is the perfect quote coming from someone who describes themselves as infamous for fighting their school's dress code double standards. DiPaolo finds that her school unfairly applies the dress code to girls but not boys. "My school's dress code prohibits boys from wearing muscle shirts," DiPaolo told the Huffington Post. "But they do all the time and don't get in trouble yet, when my bra strap accidentally slips I have to miss class time to go change." A+ trolling, Tori. Calling out sexism with honors. WATCH: |

Philando Castile shooting: officer said he felt in danger after smelling pot in car Posted: 20 Jun 2017 04:39 PM PDT Dash-camera footage released along with the transcript clearly picks up Castile telling the officer 'I do have a firearm on me'. The Minnesota police officer who shot and killed Philando Castile told state investigators that he believed his life was danger because he smelled marijuana in his car, according to transcripts released on Tuesday along with dash-camera footage. Officer Jeronimo Yanez said in an interview following the fatal traffic stop that Castile's apparent willingness to use the drug in front of his young daughter and girlfriend led Yanez to believe that the 32-year-old posed a serious threat. |
Posted: 20 Jun 2017 05:28 AM PDT Donald Trump's handling of the Russia investigation has pushed him towards an even lower approval rating, a new poll has found. A CBS survey of more than 1,000 adults across the US discovered that just 36 per cent approve of the President, five months into his first term, the lowest point recorded so far. One catalyst for those relatively poor ratings is the on-going investigation into ties between Russia and his administration before the election. |

Iraqi forces push into Mosul Old City, warn IS 'surrender or die' Posted: 19 Jun 2017 07:52 PM PDT Iraqi forces pushed deeper into Mosul's Old City on Monday after launching a final assault on the Islamic State group, warning civilians to stay inside and telling jihadists to "surrender or die". Iraqi forces launched the operation Sunday to retake the district, the last part of Iraq's second city still held by IS after a months-long offensive. |

Design video explains almost every OnePlus 5 detail Posted: 19 Jun 2017 06:01 PM PDT With one day to go until one of the most exciting smartphones of the summer becomes official, there's not much that we don't know about it. And thanks to a new video that looks at OnePlus's reasoning for designing the OnePlus 5, we now know why the handset looks like the iPhone 7 Plus but not the iPhone 8. We also know that it's going to be more expensive than last year's OnePlus flagships.
Talking to The Verge about making the OnePlus 5, various execs explained that the company's main goal this year is to make a great camera, one that can rival the camera experience on iPhone or top Samsung devices. OnePlus apparently thought about equipping last year's OnePlus 3 with a dual camera, but the endeavor was too expensive. Or it was too expensive to inform the public why such a camera works. In the video below, you'll see OnePlus CEO Pete Lau thanking Apple for doing that last year. You're also going to see a bunch of OnePlus 5 prototypes that don't look like the iPhone 7 Plus, yet the one that does, was ultimately chosen. "It's a little difficult to make two cameras, two holes in the back not look ugly," OnePlus Simon Liu says in the video. Speaking of expensive decisions, Lau also told The Verge that it's interested in edge-to-edge screen designs. "But we don't currently have the resources or access to those displays," he said. That's why the phone will not look like the Galaxy S8 or the iPhone 8. Finally, the video also reveals that the OnePlus 5 will be more expensive than its predecessors. How much will it cost? We'll just have to wait until tomorrow to find out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onBiCn963XM |

Ukraine's Poroshenko scores Trump White House meeting Posted: 20 Jun 2017 09:41 AM PDT US President Donald Trump greeted his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko in the White House on Tuesday as Washington rolled out more sanctions against pro-Russian rebels, in a diplomatic coup for Kiev. Amid speculation that Trump would refuse to meet the Ukrainian leader, Poroshenko had what the White House described as a "drop-in" with the US president. "We've had some very, very good discussions," Trump said as the pair sat side-by-side in the Oval Office. |

5 Surprising Ways to Get Most Value Out of Your Grill Posted: 20 Jun 2017 07:07 AM PDT Because of the relatively long cook time, you won't want to do this next to fast-cooking items such as burgers or hot dogs, but if you're cooking something for a longer period, bread works wonderfully on the grill. The beans may need a bit more cooking later, but this technique will do most of the cooking for you. If you're cooking something low and slow, you might just find that the beans are done and ready to use with a side dish when the main course is done, making a pairing like black beans and barbecued ribs work out perfectly. |
Reliable insider suggests the Galaxy Note 7 will launch sooner than we thought Posted: 19 Jun 2017 12:47 PM PDT After a series of reports said that Samsung intends to unveil the Galaxy Note 8 in late August or early September, around the IFA tech event in Berlin, Germany, a new leak says the phone will be out even sooner than that.
Chinese leaker of Weibo fame Ice Universe said on Monday that Samsung has already settled on the Galaxy Note 8's launch date. Apparently, the Galaxy Note 8 will be unveiled in New York City during the third week of August in New York City. If accurate, it means the Galaxy Note 8 will be unveiled anywhere between August 14th and August 20th, which would be up to two weeks earlier than the most recent estimates. Let's just hope that rushing to market to beat Apple's newest iPhone, a strategy that killed the Galaxy Note 7 last year, will work this time around. The same leaker posted on Twitter an image that shows an alleged screen protector for the handset, that indicates the Galaxy Note 8 will have an Infinity display with extremely thin bezels, just like the Galaxy S8 before it. The phone is also expected to share some of the Galaxy S8's specs, although it'll have a few unique features, including a dual lens camera and a built-in S Pen stylus. https://twitter.com/UniverseIce/status/875731253726556162 Before the Galaxy Note 8 arrives, Samsung will relaunch last year's failed Galaxy Note 7 as the Galaxy Note FE. The safe phablet will sport the same design and hardware as its predecessor. The only thing that's going to be changed is the battery. |
Qatar demands 'blockade' lifted before Gulf crisis talks Posted: 19 Jun 2017 06:49 AM PDT Qatar's foreign minister on Monday called on neighbouring states to lift their "blockade" of his country before Doha takes part in any negotiations on ending the Gulf diplomatic crisis. Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani called measures to isolate Qatar imposed by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and others "an act of aggression", adding that lifting them was a "pre-condition" for talks. "We have to make it very clear for everyone, negotiations must be done in a civilised way and should have a solid basis and not under pressure or under blockade," the foreign minister told reporters in Doha. |

No chance for single EU migration policy: Hungarian PM Posted: 19 Jun 2017 11:47 AM PDT Hungary's populist prime minister said Monday he sees no chance for a single EU-wide migration policy, just days after the bloc launched legal action against Budapest for refusing refugees under a controversial solidarity plan. "To say that there will be one integrated, single European migration policy, I do have my doubts and I do not see any chance for this," Viktor Orban told the Benelux and Visegrad group premiers meeting in Warsaw ahead of an EU summit in Brussels later this week. "Hungary is open to any negotiations to this end but we would like to continue to remain realists," the Hungarian PM added. |
First Core i9 Benchmarks: Here’s How Intel’s Powerhouse Performs Posted: 19 Jun 2017 02:30 PM PDT Intel's new high-end Skylake-X series includes the top-of-the-line Core i9-7900X, which impressively features 10 cores and a turbo boost of up to 4.5 GHz. This new i9 CPU certainly has impressive technical specs, but at an astronomic price of $999, how does it compare to AMD's latest Ryzen offerings and Intel's own less expensive models for gaming? Credit: IntelOur sister sites, Tom's Hardware and Anandtech, put the i9-7900X chip through rigorous tests against such CPUs as the Core i7 7900X and Ryzen 7 1800x paired with an EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Founder Edition GPU, so make sure to read through the full performance write-ups on those sites for even more details. |
9 Ice Cream Hacks to Get You Through Summer Posted: 20 Jun 2017 01:22 PM PDT It's an undisputed fact that we all scream for ice cream, especially during the summer months when the sun is hot and we can't always get what we want (#bikinibodgoals). The metal will increase in temperature and, in turn, melt the ice cream as it comes into contact with it. Ice cream obviously stays more frozen in the center, so it's easier to start from the outside and work your way in. |
Tesla is ‘actively talking’ about opening up its Supercharger network to other automakers Posted: 20 Jun 2017 03:27 PM PDT When the Model S was first released a few years ago, one of the biggest hurdles Tesla had to contend with centered on 'range anxiety', the fear or belief that a Tesla out on the open road was liable to run out of juice before reaching its destination or a charging station. To help assure prospective buyers that they didn't have to be afraid of becoming stranded, Tesla had the foresight to start rolling out a Supercharger network that allowed Tesla owners to charge up their cars free of charge on long drives. What's more, Tesla's Supercharger stations have the ability to charge a Model S or Model X relatively quickly, with a station being able to provide a car with 170 miles worth of juice in approximately 30 minutes.
Over the last few years, Tesla has dramatically increased the reach of its Supercharger network, both in the United States and all across the globe. Today, Tesla has more than 2,630 Supercharger stations at approximately 373 locations worldwide. And with the Model 3 release looming, not to mention ongoing sales of the Model S and the Model X still going strong, Tesla earlier this year signaled its intention to rapidly expand its Supercharger network, noting this past February that it will be doubling the "number of North American Supercharger locations in 2017." Interestingly enough, Tesla may eventually open up one of its core strategic assets to competitors. During a recent presentation at the Midwest Renewable Energy Association's Energy Fair in Wisconsin (via Jalopnik), Tesla CTO JB Straubel said that the company is "actively talking" with other auto manufacturers about opening up its Supercharger network to other cars. When asked about the potential for Tesla to share its intellectual property with other companies, Straubel's answer was rather straight forward. "For things like Supercharger," Straubel said, "we are actively talking to other car makers and we are trying to figure out a structure to work with them." With the final Model 3 unveiling set to take place next month, we imagine Elon Musk may have more to say on the matter in just a few weeks. |
