| Islamic State urges Muslim extremists to wage war in Philippine city of Marawi Posted: 24 Aug 2017 07:35 PM PDT  The Islamic State terrorist group has released a new video calling on Muslim extremists in Southeast Asia to wage holy war in the besieged Philippine city of Marawi, while denouncing America and Australia for aiding the country's military. Its release comes as the battle between Isil-linked militants and government forces in the southern Muslim city of Marawi enters its fourth month, fuelling fears that the terrorist group is trying to set up a regional base in Southeast Asia after crushing defeats in the Middle East. In the seven-minute long video, produced by Isil's Al Hayat media centre, a fighter identified as Abul-Yaman from Marawi, appeals to Muslim brothers in East Asia, particularly those in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand and Singapore to migrate to the city "to perform jihad." The graphic and chilling footage, which depicts dead Philippine soldiers and militant "martyrs" dying in battle, is accompanied by an American-accented narrator who rails against the "subjugation" of Muslims in the Philippines. It opens with scenes of young men engaged in heavy fighting amid the city ruins, brandishing AK-47s through incoming mortar fire and air strikes. The terrorist group then turns its ire on Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, for running to "his masters, the defenders of the cross, America, along with their regional guard dog Australia" to beg them for help. It accuses the Philippines' allies of aiding Duterte in "a malicious air campaign" against the Islamic State. The fighting in Marawi has put Canberra on edge, with rising concerns that the growth of Isil in the region could herald more terrorist attacks in Australia. In June Australia deployed two surveillance planes to Mindanao province, where Marawi is located, to help the Philippine military in the battle. Earlier this week, Australian spy chief Nick Warner also met President Duterte in an unusually public visit to discuss progress. The Philippines regional neighbours are also nervous. Malaysia's top terrorist officer, Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, told Channel NewsAsia that the new video was "powerful" and would "inflame the passions" of Muslim fanatics. "Since the Marawi siege started, we have seen increased activities from IS cells in Malaysia trying to enter into the southern Philippines," he said.

The man, who prosecutors said yelled 'Allahu akbar' (God is greatest) during the violence, was shot by soldiers on a street in the city centre. "We believe that it is a terrorist attack," said a prosecutors' office spokeswoman, who added the attacker "is dead." The incident comes after attacks claimed by the Islamic State group in Spain last week killed 15 people and a knifeman's stabbing spree in Finland left two dead and eight wounded. One of the two soldiers targeted was "slightly" wounded, according to federal prosecutors, who have opened a terror probe of that attack launched around 8:00 pm (1800 GMT). The mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close, told reporters the incident was the work of a "lone individual". Soldiers have been deployed at railway stations and landmark buildings since the Paris terror attacks in 2015, when a link to Brussels was first established. Freddie Martyn, 25, told the Telegraph: "Just picked up my brother from the train station. We saw two to three ambulances, three army dogs, 10 police officers and the same amount of soldiers. "Apparently a guy with a machete attacked one soldier and apparently it all went very quickly. They thought he had a bomb on him. They fired two shots directly at him and took him out." "I got to work five minutes before the bombing at Maelbeek station. "I feel a bit scared by all of this but sadly I am getting quite used to it." The Belgian capital has been on high alert since suicide bombers struck Zavantem Airport and the Maalbeek metro station near the EU quarter in March 2016, killing 32 people and injuring hundreds more. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attacks, which were carried out by the same Brussels-based cell behind the November 2015 suicide bombings and shootings in Paris which left 130 dead. Belgian authorities heaved a sigh of relief in June when a man who tried to bomb a Brussels train station was shot dead by a soldier. Belgian authorities identified the man in that incident as a 36-year-old Moroccan national with the initials O.Z., while local media named him as Oussama Zariouh. No one was injured in the foiled attack at Brussels Central station but officials said the consequences could have been severe had the bomb, full of nails and gas canisters, detonated properly. The man shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) during the attack and prosecutors said he had sympathies for IS. Police found explosive materials in a raid on the home of the suspect in Molenbeek, a Brussels district which has been linked to recent deadly terror plots in France and Belgium. Belgian soldiers and police have repeatedly been the target of attacks in recent months.

The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) has filmed a snailfish at a depth of 8,178 meters (26,830 ft) in the Mariana Trench — a record depth for capturing a fish in video footage. SEE ALSO: This newly discovered jellyfish looks like something out of 'Avatar' "We've set a world record for filming a fish at an accurately measured depth," JAMSTEC senior research scientist, Kazumasa Oguri, told the Japan Times. The video was taken with 4K cameras mounted on JAMSTEC's deep-sea research vessel. The purplish-looking Mariana snailfish, who is believed to have visited the trench to feed, was caught on camera, likely attracted by the bait that the scientists placed. These deep sea creatures are known to swim in waters deeper than 7,000 metres. The Japanese institution narrowly beat out efforts by a Chinese academy earlier this year. The Chinese Academy of Sciences had in April filmed a fish at a depth of 8,152 meters in the same trench. According to scientists, it is unlikely that any fish can survive in the oceans at a depth beyond 8,200 metres. No fish has ever been discovered beyond this point. The Galaxy Note 8 is just marginally bigger than the Galaxy S8+, after all, and it sports the exact same specs. But the phone does come with a built-in S Pen stylus and the associated software suite, and it also packs a dual-lens rear camera the likes of which Samsung fans have never seen before on a Galaxy phone. But if the Galaxy Note 8 seems boring to you and you're not too thrilled about getting a bigger device just for the camera experience, you should know Samsung is already hard at work on even better phones.
According to well-sourced insider Ming-Chi Kuo, who's always dishing out details on unreleased Apple and Samsung gear, Samsung is already working on next year's Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 handsets. The Galaxy S9 is rumored to feature the same dual lens camera as the Galaxy Note 8, Kuo explained in note seen by 9to5Google. That's hardly surprising, considering Samsung wanted a dual camera on the Galaxy S8, but couldn't pull things together in time. What stopped Samsung from equipping the Galaxy S8 with a dual lens camera, according to reports, was the fingerprint sensor. Placing it under the screen in time for the Galaxy S8's launch was not possible, and Samsung hasn't perfected the technology in time for the Note 8's launch either. That's why it had to move the sensor to the back of the Galaxy S8 and scrap the prototypes that featured a dual camera to make room for the sensor. The Galaxy S9 will still retain the rear-facing fingerprint sensor, as Samsung will debut under-display fingerprint sensing tech only later next year, according to Kuo's report. The Galaxy Note 9 will introduce the feature, and Kuo says that Samsung is developing the in-screen fingerprint scanner with the help of Himax and Egis.
