Here Is Everything We Know (And Don't) About Russia's Mysterious ICBM Tests Posted: 27 Sep 2017 04:54 PM PDT Russia's Strategic Missile Forces tested a RS-12M Topol intercontinental ballistic missile on September 26. The missile was launched from Kapustin Yar to the Sary-Shagan test site. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the launch was designed "to test an advanced combat payload" which is designed to "overcome missile defenses." The data gathered from the experiment will be used to develop future Russian ballistic missiles technology to counter missile defenses. |

Almost 17,000 people prevented from voting in key swing state won by Trump, study finds Posted: 27 Sep 2017 02:54 AM PDT Nearly 17,000 registered Wisconsin voters — potentially more — were kept from the polls in November by the state's strict voter ID law, according to a new survey of nonvoters by two University of Wisconsin political scientists. The survey, summarized Monday on the university's website, is certain to further roil an ongoing debate over whether President Donald Trump's narrow victory in Wisconsin over Hillary Clinton was a result of efforts to depress Democratic turnout. Trump defeated Clinton by 22,748 votes out of more than 2.9 million ballots cast. |
Christian to head Syria parliament for first time in decades Posted: 28 Sep 2017 07:17 AM PDT A Christian legislator was Thursday elected speaker of parliament in predominantly Muslim Syria for the first time in decades. Hammudeh Sabbagh, a 58-year-old Syriac Orthodox Christian graduate in law and member of President Bashar al-Assad's Baath party from Hasakeh province in northeast Syria, won 193 votes out of 252 cast, state media reported. Before the 2011 outbreak of war in Syria, Christians of 11 different denominations made up about five percent of the population. |

The last thing comet probe Rosetta saw Posted: 28 Sep 2017 10:34 AM PDT Robotic comet explorer Rosetta sent home a last-gasp photo of her target's rocky facade before crashing into its surface to end a 12-year deep-space odyssey, ground controllers said Thursday. Almost a year to the day since Rosetta's demise on September 30 last year, the European Space Agency (ESA) issued the fuzzy image of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, pieced together from the final bursts of data relayed by the orbiter. The image of a one-square-metre (3.3 foot by 3.3 foot) section of comet presumed to be Rosetta's boulder-strewn, dusty resting place, was taken from a distance of about 20 metres. |

Japan opposition unites in election bid to topple Abe Posted: 28 Sep 2017 01:02 AM PDT Japan's main opposition Thursday decided not to run candidates in the upcoming election, effectively joining forces with a new party formed by popular Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike in a bid to topple Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The move capped a stunning few days on Japan's sleepy political scene that has seen the calling of a snap election, the creation of Koike's dynamic new "Party of Hope" and the effective unification of opposition to Abe's conservative government. The centre-left Democratic Party (DP) approved its leader Seiji Maehara's proposal not to field candidates in the October 22 poll. |

Preaching security after deadly Tennessee church shooting Posted: 27 Sep 2017 09:33 AM PDT When a masked gunman killed a woman and wounded six people at a Tennessee church last weekend, it drew national attention — as did the 2015 massacre of nine black church members in Charleston, South Carolina, the 2014 slayings of three people at a Kansas Jewish center and retirement home and the 2012 killings of six at a Wisconsin Sikh temple. |

School says it will ban student athletes from playing if they take a knee during national anthem Posted: 28 Sep 2017 12:34 PM PDT A Louisiana high school is ordering student athletes to stand during the national anthem, echoing Donald Trump's calls to prohibit athletes from standing or kneeling in protest. In a letter to students and parents, Parkway High School Principal Waylon Bates said that the school "requires student athletes to stand in a respectful manner" and warned students who don't bend to the rule would be punished with a loss of playing time or "removal from the team". By mandating athletes rise for the anthem, Mr Bates thrust his high school into a national furor provoked by Mr Trump's comments. |
