United gave its final 747 aircraft a 1970s sendoff Posted: 07 Nov 2017 01:29 PM PST United flight 747 made history Tuesday morning. The flight from San Francisco to Honolulu was the final flight on the airline's last Boeing 747 aircraft. It all came fill circle after the first commercial flight departed on the same route on June 23, 1970 — 47 years ago. SEE ALSO: Today marks the last flight 666 bound for HEL on Friday the 13th. Would you take it? This wasn't just any old takeoff — it was an homage to the '70s with the flight crew decked out in original uniforms and even the ticket jackets throwing it back a few decades. In the U.S., United and Delta have retired the last of the 747-400s this year, marking the end of an era. The newer version of the 747, known as the 747-800, failed to attract any U.S. passenger airlines, and is mainly being sold to freight carriers. United is auctioning off parts of the historic plane in honor of the retirement. Bids using United frequent flyer miles are still open for the altimeter, tail number, an oxygen pressure indicator, and other plane hardware. The final flight is in the air after departing at 11 a.m. and expected to make it to Hawaii this afternoon where the farewell festivities will continue. Farewell, Queen of the Skies. Mnangagwa: Mugabe's sunken 'crocodile' Posted: 06 Nov 2017 10:34 AM PST Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was removed by Zimbabwe's leader Robert Mugabe as vice president on Monday after a bitter tussle with the first lady over succession, had waited almost four decades for his chance at the top job. An acrimonious weekend in which Mugabe's wife was openly booed at a rally prompting the president to blame Mnangagwa, who was present, probably sealed the fate of the outgoing number two. Analysts have suggested that Mnangagwa's sacking would effectively disqualify him from the race to eventually replace Mugabe, now aged 93. |

Florida State University announces ban on all fraternities and sororities following death of student Posted: 06 Nov 2017 01:58 PM PST Florida State University has announced a ban on all fraternities and sororities following the death of a student at a house party on Friday. John Thrasher, the FSU president, announced the indefinite ban on Monday in the wake of the alcohol-related death during a freshman pledge and cocaine charges for another fraternity member. "This pause is needed to review and reflect on the loss of a young life and to implement serious changes," Mr Thrasher said. "For this suspension to end, there will need to be a new normal for Greek life on campus. They must participate in that culture." Andrew Coffey, a 20-year-old Pi Kappa Phi fraternity pledge, was found unconscious on Friday morning following a house party close to the campus in Tallahassee . He was given treatment but pronounced dead at the scene. Andrew Coffey Credit: Facebook "All of our student organisations – Greek organisations and the other recognised student organisations on campus – must step up. They will have to participate in the solution," Mr Thrasher said. FSU is the third US university this year to ban fraternities and sororities. Penn State and Louisiana State universities both took the step following alcohol-related deaths. |

How to Get Younger Kids Excited About Being Frugal Posted: 07 Nov 2017 07:20 AM PST It is easy for parents to fall into the trap of keeping their kids far away from the financial realities of family life. This gives children the impression that things just "appear" at home and that their parents have an inexhaustible supply of money with which to buy these things (if they think about it at all). The problem, of course, is that this approach never really teaches your children how to be careful with their money and cognizant of its value. |
