ICE Spokesman Quits, Bashes Trump Administration On Immigration Raids Posted: 13 Mar 2018 02:48 AM PDT A spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement in San Francisco resigned over the Trump administration's handling of a recent immigrant raid in the Bay Area. James Schwab told the San Francisco Chronicle late Monday that administration officials, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions and President Donald Trump, grossly exaggerated the number of undocumented immigrants who avoided arrest after Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf tipped off the public days before the raid began on Feb. 25. "Efforts by local politicians have shielded removable criminal aliens from immigration enforcement and created another magnet for more illegal immigration, all at the expense of the safety and security of the very people it purports to protect," the agency said in a statement. |

Death of puppy on United flight prompts U.S. agency probe Posted: 14 Mar 2018 03:10 PM PDT U.S. Senator John Kennedy, who earlier on Wednesday sent a letter to United Airlines President Scott Kirby demanding information on the high number of animals that have died in the carrier's care, wrote on Twitter that he planned to file a bill on Thursday that would prohibit airlines from putting animals in overhead bins. Kennedy, in his letter, said United's "pattern of animal deaths and injuries is simply inexcusable." He cited figures from the Transportation Department that of the 24 animals that died on U.S. carriers last year, 18 were on United flights. |

Russian broadcaster RT could be forced off UK TV over spy crisis Posted: 13 Mar 2018 10:09 AM PDT Britain's media regulator Ofcom said Russian broadcaster RT could lose its UK license if Theresa May's government determines that Moscow was behind the poisoning of a former Russian double agent in England this month. RT, or Russia Today, is a round-the-clock news network that is funded by Vladimir Putin's government. With tensions growing between London and Moscow over the attack on Sergei Skripal, and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, some lawmakers have said RT should be blocked in Britain. |

Utah courthouse shooting video released Posted: 13 Mar 2018 06:14 AM PDT Dramatic video of a deadly 2014 courthouse shooting in Salt Lake City has been released after a long court battle by the Utah Media Coalition. The video shows a U.S. Marshall shooting dead, racketeering defendant and gang member Siale Angilau as he attacks a testifying witness. The Department of Justice had wanted to suppress the video for fear it would spark a wave of gang-related retaliation. Rough cut (no reporter narration). |

Lead poisoning may hasten death for millions in US: study Posted: 12 Mar 2018 10:52 PM PDT Compared to people with little or no lead in their blood, those with high levels -- at least 6.7 milligrammes per decilitre (mg/dl) -- were 37 percent more likely to die early, according to a new study in The Lancet Public Health, a leading medical journal. The risk of succumbing to coronary heart disease doubled in such cases, the study found. "Low levels of lead exposure are an important, but largely ignored, risk factor for death from cardiovascular disease," mainly heart attacks and strokes, said lead author Bruce Lanphear, a professor at Simon Fraser University in Canada. |
Fired by Trump over Twitter, Tillerson doesn't thank him Posted: 13 Mar 2018 12:06 PM PDT Hours after President Trump announced his firing over Twitter, outgoing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday left the former real estate entrepreneur off the list of people he praised and thanked in a brief speech about his accomplishments and the future of his department. Tillerson, looking and sounding defeated as he delivered an eight-minute farewell, said he was delegating his duties to Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, effective at the end of the day, and formally ending his own watch as the top U.S. diplomat at the end of the month. The former Exxon chief told reporters in the State Department briefing room that Trump had telephoned him from Air Force One a little after noon — some five hours after the president announced to the world that Tillerson was out, to be replaced by CIA director Mike Pompeo. |

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 10:06 AM PDT Republicans searching for a silver lining in the returns from the nail-biting special congressional election in western Pennsylvania may as well admit it. True, their candidate Rick Saccone came tantalisingly close. Whoever is eventually confirmed as the victor will have to resume campaigning almost immediately ahead of the midterm elections in November, and for votes in a seat that will look very different from the one he just competed for. |

Russia says U.S. plans to strike Damascus, pledges military response Posted: 13 Mar 2018 08:52 AM PDT Russia said on Tuesday it had information that the United States planned to bomb the government quarter in Damascus on an invented pretext, and said it would respond militarily if it felt Russian lives were threatened by such an attack. Valery Gerasimov, head of Russia's General Staff, said Moscow had information that rebels in the enclave of eastern Ghouta were planning to fake a chemical weapons attack against civilians and blame it on the Syrian army. |

Palestinian PM Hamdallah survives Gaza roadside bomb attack Posted: 13 Mar 2018 12:39 PM PDT By Nidal al-Mughrabi GAZA (Reuters) - Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah survived an assassination attempt in Gaza on Tuesday, the Palestinian Authority said after an apparent roadside bomb targeted his motorcade. The attack on the Western-backed leader, who is spearheading the Authority's reconciliation efforts with Gaza's dominant group, Hamas, took place as the White House prepared to hold a meeting on the humanitarian situation in the enclave. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for what one Palestinian Authority security official in Gaza said was a roadside bomb. |
Russia says 'not guilty' of ex-spy poisoning as UK deadline looms Posted: 13 Mar 2018 09:33 AM PDT Moscow on Tuesday denied it was behind the poisoning of a former double agent in Britain as a midnight deadline loomed to explain how a suspected Russian-made nerve agent was used in the attack. "Russia is not guilty," said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of the attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter in an English city on March 4. The United States, NATO and the European Union have all backed Britain in the deepening diplomatic crisis. |

U.S. court upholds most of Texas law to punish 'sanctuary cities' Posted: 13 Mar 2018 05:57 PM PDT A U.S. appeals court panel on Tuesday upheld most of a Republican-backed Texas law to punish "sanctuary cities," allowing it to remain in effect while the case is being fought in a lower court. The law was the first of its kind since Republican Donald Trump became president in January 2017, promising to crack down on illegal immigration and communities that protect the immigrants. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down one provision in the law enacted by the most-populous Republican-led state to punish local officials who endorse policies running contrary to the law. |

In February, the Fed released the details of this year's stress test scenarios. |
