One killed in Paris knife attack by man shouting 'Allah Akbar' Posted: 12 May 2018 03:37 PM PDT By Julie Carriat and Emmanuel Jarry PARIS (Reuters) - An assailant shouting "Allah Akbar" killed a passer-by in a knife attack that also wounded four others in the heart of Paris late on Saturday before he was shot dead by police, French authorities said. French prosecutor Francois Molins told reporters the police's anti-terrorism unit would launch an investigation, given the aggressor's "mode of operation." French President Emmanuel Macron praised officers for "neutralizing the terrorist." France "will not yield an inch to the enemies of freedom," Macron said on Twitter. The country has been on high alert amid a series of attacks, commissioned or inspired by the Islamic State militant group, over the past three years that has killed dozens of people. |
Correction: West Coast Volcanoes-Q&A story Posted: 13 May 2018 10:57 AM PDT SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — In a story May 12 about West Coast volcanoes, The Associated Press reported erroneously that Hawaii was part of the "Ring of Fire," a Pacific Ocean area prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to subducting tectonic plates, and that the eruption of Kilauea had experts eyeing volcanoes on the U.S. West Coast. Experts say Hawaii is a volcanic hotspot, where persistent sources of heat from within the earth sustain volcanic activity, and separate from the Ring of Fire. |
Iraq holds first nationwide election since IS defeat Posted: 12 May 2018 09:25 AM PDT Iraq voted Saturday in its first parliamentary election since declaring victory over the Islamic State group, with growing tensions between neighbouring Iran and the United States threatening a power struggle. Turnout appeared weak as polling stations closed across the country after 11 hours of voting that took place under tight security given the ongoing threat posed by the jihadists. There were no major incidents reported across the country, with the only flareup coming when, a local official said, shelling killed a policeman and wounded five others in eastern Iraq. |

The official Xinhua news agency confirmed the ship had left for trials with a short announcement. Nicaragua's army calls for end to violence Posted: 13 May 2018 02:35 AM PDT Nicaragua's army on Saturday called for an end to violence in the country and distanced itself from President Daniel Ortega, saying it was not repressing anyone for taking part in anti-government protests. "We think that dialogue is the answer," he stressed, adding that the military rejects what he sees as an effort to misconstrue military actions as repression on behalf of the Ortega government. Initially triggered by reforms to cut spending on Nicaragua's deficit-laden social security system -- later abandoned by Ortega -- the protests swelled to include other grudges against the president who is widely seen as autocratic and distant. |

Elon Musk promises free rides through tunnel, but to where? Posted: 11 May 2018 11:22 PM PDT By Steve Gorman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Billionaire businessman Elon Musk is promising the public "free rides" in the next few months through the first high-speed passenger tunnel drilled beneath Los Angeles by his aptly named underground transit venture, the Boring Company. The question is whether the tunnel as advertised by Musk on social media will live up to the sensation he stirred by suggesting commuters will soon get to sample a new subterranean traffic system he has under development in the nation's second-largest city. The tunnel shown in an attention-getting video clip Musk posted to Instagram on Thursday actually runs not under Los Angeles but beneath the tiny, adjacent municipality of Hawthorne, where his Boring Company and SpaceX rocket firm are both headquartered. |

A few good women: Female filmmakers at Cannes Posted: 12 May 2018 07:37 AM PDT In a year dominated by the #MeToo movement, the Cannes film festival is feeling the heat to address glaring gender imbalances in the competition for its top prize, the Palme d'Or. Of the 268 filmmakers who have claimed one of Cannes' top three prizes, only 11 -- or four percent -- have been women, an analysis by AFP shows. New Zealand's Jane Campion remains the only female director to have received the highest accolade, the Palme d'Or, awarded for her masterpiece "The Piano" in 1993. |

Airbus, Boeing fly into lucrative services market Posted: 12 May 2018 09:40 PM PDT Airbus and Boeing may have built their global success on the back of the transcontinental airliners but they are now eyeing a lucrative if rather less glamorous side of the aviation sector in their battle to dominate the skies -- parts and repairs. The European and American firms have long done some business in after-sales support, but they are now moving to win greater market share and take on other players like Germany's Lufthansa Technik and US-based AAR. "The services market is more lucrative than actual aircraft sales because it has more potential and it covers many different spectrums," said Shukor Yusof, an analyst with aviation research firm Endau Analytics in Malaysia. |
