Extreme volcanic eruptions could explain mysterious rock formation on Mars Posted: 18 Jun 2018 10:23 AM PDT Could a volcanic eruption be the key to unlocking the mysterious geological history of Mars? Back in the 1960s, NASA's Mariner spacecraft discovered an extremely large and unusually soft rock formation. The makeup of the mass, now known as the Medusa Fossae formation, stumped researchers for decades because they were never able to determine how it got there. SEE ALSO: Tiny NASA satellite bound for Mars snaps photo of Earth from thousands of miles away But now, new research seems to answer that question — and maybe many others. More than 3 billion years ago, extreme volcanic eruptions on Mars dropped the huge deposit near the Martian equator, according to the new study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets. A 13-kilometer (8-mile) diameter crater being infilled by the Medusae Fossae Formation.Image: High Resolution Stereo Camera/European Space AgencyThe Medusa Fossae is about one fifth the size of the United States. "This is a massive deposit, not only on a Martian scale, but also in terms of the solar system, because we do not know of any other deposit that is like this," planetary scientist Lujendra Ojha, the lead author of the new study, said in a statement. Ojha and his colleagues used gravity data from spacecraft orbiting Mars to measure the formation density. Through this, they were able to determine that the rock was unusually porous, allowing them to rule out other potential compositions like ice. On a basic level, the formation is a bunch of hills and mounds of sedimentary rock but because much of Mars's history is shrouded in mystery, a finding like this is huge. An isolated hill in the Medusae Fossae Formation. The effect of wind erosion on this hill is evident by its streamlined shape.Image: High Resolution Stereo Camera/European Space Agency.Eruptions of the magnitude suggested by the study would also have an enormous impact on the planet's climate as well. A considerable amount of "climate-altering" gases like hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide accompany most volcanic eruptions and would have spit out enough water to cover the red planet in a global ocean, the study says. These findings paint a better picture of what habitability on Mars would look like, as well as the usefulness of gravity surveys. "Future gravity surveys could help distinguish between ice, sediments and igneous rocks in the upper crust of the planet," co-author and planetary scientist Kevin Lewis explained. Duke and Duchess of Sussex join the Queen at Royal Ascot Posted: 19 Jun 2018 06:16 AM PDT The Duchess of Sussex has made her debut at Royal Ascot, joining the Queen for her favourite event of the season as she channeled the monochrome style of My Fair Lady. The Duchess, in a white and black hat and dress, accompanied her husband in an Ascot carriage for her first outing to the Royal Enclosure, before presenting a trophy to race winner Frankie Dettori. While she appeared to have taken style inspiration from the outfits of Audrey Hepburn's Eliza Doolittle, she suffered no similar etiquette mishaps, mingling with seasoned race-goers and engaged in cheerful conversation with the Queen. The Queen, in bright yellow, led her family in the opening day of Royal Ascot, joined by the Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Royal and Duke of York with his daughters. The Duke of Cambridge was elsewhere, undertaking engagements focusing on male mental health and technological innovation in Liverpool, while the Duchess remained out of sight with her three children. Royal Ascot 2018, in pictures The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in the third carriage of the tradition Royal procession, along with the Earl and Countess of Wessex. They would have had much to talk about, as the newlywed Sussexes celebrated the "one month anniversary" of their wedding and the Wessexes marked 19 years to the day since their own Windsor Castle nuptials. The Queen wearing yellow for the first day of Royal Ascot In an unmistakable sign of welcome into the Royal family, the Duke and Duchess were tasked with presenting the trophy for the St James's Palace Stakes, won by Favourite Without Parole ridden by Frankie Dettori and trained by John Gosden. The Duchess of Sussex wore an embellished white shirt dress from Givenchy, the fashion house that designed her wedding gown, with a striking hat by Royal favourite Philip Treacy. How the Royal Family have dressed for the races over the years Fitting in with the strict dress code of the Royal Enclosure, the Duchess' colour scheme was reminiscent of the 1964 My Fair Lady film, in which a beautiful cockney flower seller mingles with high society at Ascot before being unmasked by her coarse shouts of encouragement at the horses. Homeland Security secretary gets shredded on Twitter after she lies about policy that separates families at border Posted: 18 Jun 2018 07:12 AM PDT As the debate rages on about the Trump administration's horrific policy of separating undocumented parents from their children as they attempt to cross the border between the United States and Mexico, the fight between officials and lawmakers has spilled over onto social media. One tweet, in particular, from Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen, has served as a flashpoint. She tweeted on Sunday that the DHS doesn't "have a policy of separating families at the border. Period." We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period. — Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen (@SecNielsen) June 17, 2018 But images and videos across social media as well as a plethora of well-reported stories have offered substantial evidence to the contrary, relaying stories and even showing tent cities created for undocumented children separated from their families. Here are photos of the tent city near El Paso that is housing immigrant children separated from their parents. Photos by @i_p_a_1 for the @TexasTribune. Read more here: https://t.co/2rqHNDpTLx pic.twitter.com/RUIuGbl4yl — Texas Tribune (@TexasTribune) June 16, 2018 Just visited the Brownsville Children's Facility. Trump Administration didn't let us talk to the kids and they even tried to stop me from recording outside the building. They are clearly sensitive about this trip. This place is packed with kids—over 100 taken from parents. pic.twitter.com/7RVP0ZgT8e — Chris Van Hollen (@ChrisVanHollen) June 18, 2018 What's more, journalists and lawmakers made note of previous comments Nielsen has made in defense of the same policy she tweeted doesn't exist. "Nielsen said the department has ... a policy that it will refer everyone caught crossing the border illegally for prosecution, even if they ... have small children. Any parents who are prosecuted ... will be separated from their children in the process." https://t.co/PiCVLVA2aF https://t.co/Nfs9a3oxxx — Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) June 17, 2018 Kirstjen Nielsen yesterday: "We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period." But in May 10, she defended the administration's separation policy to NPR https://t.co/nLC5SY0DzB — Evan Siegfried (@evansiegfried) June 18, 2018 Nielsen didn't exactly help herself, either, on Monday morning by saying, "We will not apologize for doing out job." Lawmakers have jumped in, calling out Nielsen and her statement, labeling it a lie, and challenging both the Trump administration and Nielsen to address the growing crisis that is spiraling out of control. This is a lie. Period. https://t.co/KUUQyyU2kF — Katherine Clark (@RepKClark) June 18, 2018 You are a stone cold liar. https://t.co/JXKb7ppwwt — Hakeem Jeffries (@RepJeffries) June 18, 2018 This statement is false. There are thousands of separated families that prove otherwise. My office is working to reunite 3 mothers who were separated from their kids at the border. Will highlight these stories at this week's family separation hearing. #FamiliesBelongTogether https://t.co/iZbAxDdDzG — Nanette D. Barragán (@RepBarragan) June 18, 2018 .@SecNielsen This is a LIE! The Members you are speaking on are at the Detention facilities! We are on the grounds at the border taking with officials... Why don't you STOP typing Tweets in D.C and come to Texas and see for your self. This situation of heartbreaking! https://t.co/2oa1mO22hp — Sheila Jackson Lee (@JacksonLeeTX18) June 18, 2018 The Trump Administration's family separation policy tore 2,000 families apart in six weeks but they won't stop lying about it. https://t.co/gw9RwUVjx5 — Rep. Don Beyer (@RepDonBeyer) June 18, 2018 Retract this statement, Madame Secretary.Yes, technically YOU are not at the border separating families YOURSELF. You are in charge of a policy that turns parents over to DOJ, resulting in the separation of children. You know this, and still - incredibly - sent out this tweet. https://t.co/CikreZ286K — Chris Murphy (@ChrisMurphyCT) June 18, 2018 This is a lie. There is no law. There is no court mandate. This is a policy made solely by this administration, and you can stop it right now. And every second you don't you are directly responsible for unimaginable amounts of misery. Period. https://t.co/nf0lF9VEoO — Ed Markey (@SenMarkey) June 18, 2018 While it's mostly been Democrats reacting to Nielsen's statement, some Republicans, including former First Lady Laura Bush, have publicly opposed the Trump administration's policy. As of Monday morning, though, Trump was back on Twitter himself and, though he didn't address Nielsen's comments directly, he did address the issue but in the most horrendous way, continuing to blame Democrats. Children are being used by some of the worst criminals on earth as a means to enter our country. Has anyone been looking at the Crime taking place south of the border. It is historic, with some countries the most dangerous places in the world. Not going to happen in the U.S. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 18, 2018 It is the Democrats fault for being weak and ineffective with Boarder Security and Crime. Tell them to start thinking about the people devastated by Crime coming from illegal immigration. Change the laws! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 18, 2018 We truly live in the worst, darkest timeline. UPDATE: June 18, 2018, 10:58 a.m. EDT Updated to include new comments from Sec. Nielsen
