Posted: 02 Jun 2018 08:20 AM PDT China is expanding its military presence in the South China Sea in order to intimidate and coerce its neighbours, the US's most senior defence official has claimed. "China's policy in the South China Sea stands in stark contrast to the openness that our strategy promotes, it calls into question China's broader goals," said James Mattis, the US defence secretary. |

New Mexico, Colorado wildfires force hundreds to evacuate Posted: 02 Jun 2018 02:06 PM PDT The two fires, about 250 miles (400 km) apart in the drought-parched Four Corners region of the Southwestern United States, have consumed almost 30,000 acres (12,000 hectares)between them, officials said. The larger of the two, the so-called Ute Park Fire in Colfax County, New Mexico, was zero percent contained after scorching nearly 28,000 acres by Saturday near Cimarron, a town of about 1,100 people northeast of Santa Fe, according to a bulletin on the New Mexico Fire Information website. About 300 homes were threatened in Cimarron, where officials issued a mandatory evacuation on Friday. |

Pope to meet 5 abused Chilean priests Posted: 02 Jun 2018 09:27 AM PDT Pope Francis will on Saturday meet five Chilean priests who were sexually abused by another priest, Fernando Karadima, in an effort to heal their wounds and those of the church, the Vatican said. In a letter to Chileans issued last week, the pope had voiced his "shame" that the Catholic church had failed "to listen and react in time" to allegations of sexual abuse by Chilean clergy. Several members of the Chilean church hierarchy are accused by victims of ignoring and covering up child abuse by Karadima during the 1980s and 1990s. |

At least four projectiles were fired from Gaza at Israel, the military said in a statement, adding that three were intercepted and one fell short. None of Gaza's militant groups claimed responsibility for the rocket fire. |
Five dead as E coli outbreak spreads across the US in contaminated lettuce Posted: 02 Jun 2018 05:12 AM PDT Five people have died due to an E coli outbreak across the United States, thought to be spread by romaine lettuce. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 197 cases of the deadly disease across 35 states, making it the largest E coli outbreak since 2006, when 200 people were affected. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says there is no single grower or distributor to be blamed for the outbreak, and is still investigating, Arizona's Yuma growing region is thought to be the source of the contaminated lettuce. |

Nicaragua buries victims of latest violence Posted: 01 Jun 2018 08:20 PM PDT Mourning families held funerals across Nicaragua on Friday for 16 people killed in one of the bloodiest days of protest in the country, where weeks of anti-government demonstrations have left more than 100 dead. Anguished relatives sobbed over the caskets of their loved ones at a series of funerals in the capital Managua, shocked over the brutal repression of what was a peaceful Mother's Day march on Wednesday. "Lord give me peace in my heart... I never expected this," said his weeping mother, Yadira Cordoba, as she clung to his coffin while it was being closed. |
US-Mexico border: How hope, aspiration and love drives migrants through a perilous journey Posted: 02 Jun 2018 04:47 AM PDT As Donald Trump stood before his jubilant supporters at the end of his thank you tour in Alabama in December 2016 chants of "build the wall" echoed around the Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The boisterous crowd interrupted the then president-elect to remind him of the promise he had made during the election campaign: to clamp down on people illegally crossing the border into the US. The infamous structure, despite being practically impossible to deliver, serves as a physical and metaphorical blockade stopping undocumented immigrants entering the US from Mexico and Central America, 11 million of whom already reside in the country. |

The Singapore hotel where top brass, dealers and spies rub shoulders Posted: 03 Jun 2018 07:54 AM PDT By Greg Torode SINGAPORE (Reuters) - For the region's military officers, diplomats, weapons manufacturers and spies, there are few livelier places than the lobby of Singapore's Shangri-La hotel around mid-year. Here, beneath pillared ceilings and chandeliers, they gather for an annual informal bash - called the Shangri-La Dialogue - organized by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies. This year's chapter was held at the weekend and the chatter was particularly lively given the strategic shifts shaking Asia, from North Korea to rapidly-evolving rivalry between India and China. |

Melania Trump unseen in public for 22 days as she skips Camp David trip Posted: 02 Jun 2018 07:17 AM PDT Melania Trump will not join her husband at the Camp David presidential retreat this weekend, extending to 22 days the time since she last appeared in public. The First Lady was last seen on May 10 and underwent surgery for a "benign" kidney issue on May 14, spending a few days in hospital before being released. Mrs Trump's lack of appearance at events she would normally be expected to attend has created headlines in the US media and triggered conspiracy theories. She addressed them on Wednesday, tweeting: "I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I'm doing. "Rest assured, I'm here at the White House [with] my family, feeling great, & working hard on behalf of children & the American people!" Donald Trump will be spending the weekend at Camp David – a location he rarely attends, preferring instead his Florida resort Mar-a-lago. But the White House confirmed that Mrs Trump will not be with him. News of Mrs Trump's operation last month was broken by a spokesman for the First Lady. There had been no public signs before the statement dropped that she had been unwell. Mrs Trump's communications director said at the time that the First Lady "underwent an embolisation procedure to treat a benign kidney condition". She said "the procedure was successful and there were no complications" and added: "The First Lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere." Mrs Trump was treated at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on the edge of Washington. It is unclear when she will next appear in at a public event. |
Nigeria's Senate president summoned for questioning over robbery Posted: 03 Jun 2018 03:15 PM PDT Nigerian police on Sunday summoned the head of the upper house of parliament for questioning after members of a criminal gang implicated him following a brutal bank robbery that left 33 people dead. Senate President Bukola Saraki, the third-most powerful politician in the country who has denied the allegation, served from 2003 to 2011 as state governor of Kwara, where the brazen daylight robberies took place in the central town of Offa on April 5. National police spokesman Jimoh Moshood said 22 suspects have been arrested over the robbery of six Offa banks, including five ring leaders who alleged Saraki's involvement in the gang. |

Targeted cancer treatments far outperform traditional methods Posted: 02 Jun 2018 06:58 AM PDT Cancer treatments that attack tumors based on their individual genetic traits -- not their location in the body -- far outperform traditional methods, extending survival for twice as many patients, a study said Saturday. The precision medicine field of targeted therapy involves testing tumors for clues about their genetic mutations, and matching patients with new drugs designed to block cancer's growth on a molecular level. The results of the first and largest precision medicine trial to look at survival across a host of cancer types and many different targeted therapies were released at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago, the world's largest annual cancer meeting. |

"There were some incidents of stone pelting in downtown but our (policemen) exhibited restraint and used minimum force," Kashmir police inspector general S.P. Pani told AFP. |
