Khashoggi criticizes Saudi prince in newly released interview Posted: 20 Oct 2018 01:55 AM PDT Saudi critic Jamal Khashoggi criticized Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's "authoritarian rule" shortly before his death, in an interview published following confirmation he died at the kingdom's Istanbul consulate. Speaking off the record to a Newsweek journalist working on a story about the Saudi leadership, he insisted he did not view himself as "an opposition" -- he just wanted "a better Saudi Arabia". "I'm not calling for the overthrow of the regime, because I know it's not possible and is too risky, and there is no one to overthrow the regime," Khashoggi said. |
Thousands of caravan migrants take shelter in southern Mexico Posted: 20 Oct 2018 09:44 PM PDT The migrants pose a tough challenge to the Mexican government's pledge to stop the illegal travelers' plans to press ahead to the U.S. border. More than 5,100 migrants have been registered in three shelters in the Mexican border town of Ciudad Hidalgo, while another 2,000 had camped out for the night in the town's central square, said Gerardo Hernandez, head of the local government's emergency services. "So far, they're all peaceful, thank God." In a statement on Saturday night, Mexico's federal government said "nearly 900 migrants" had arrived by unauthorized means, while 640 had been processed after being allowed to cross into the country via the international border crossing on the Suchite River that divides Guatemala from Mexico. |

Israel delays eviction of West Bank Bedouin village Posted: 20 Oct 2018 02:44 PM PDT Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday postponed the forced eviction of a Bedouin village in the occupied West Bank, a government official said. The fate of Khan al-Ahmar has drawn international concern after Israel said it planned to raze the village, a ramshackle camp housing 180 residents. Its residents, backed by foreign activists who have gathered at the site, have been waiting for bulldozers to move in at any time after an Oct. 1 deadline from Israel for the villagers to demolish their own homes expired. |

Israel reopens people, goods crossings to Gaza: statement Posted: 20 Oct 2018 10:25 PM PDT Israel ordered the country's goods and people border crossings with Gaza to be opened on Sunday, just four days after shuttering them following a Palestinian rocket attack that sparked retaliatory strikes. "The decision comes after a decrease in the violent events in Gaza over the weekend and efforts (militant Islamist Gaza rulers) Hamas made to restrain" demonstrators, a statement from Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman office read. On Wednesday, Lieberman had ordered the closure of the Kerem Shalom goods crossing and the Erez crossing for people, after a rocket from the Palestinian territory hit a home in southern Israel, prompting the Jewish state to strike 20 Hamas targets in Gaza. |
Special police force deployed in Nigerian state of Kaduna: Buhari on Twitter Posted: 21 Oct 2018 11:46 AM PDT A special police force has been deployed to flashpoints in the northern state of Kaduna on Sunday in the wake of communal violence over the last few days that has killed 55 people, President Muhammadu Buhari said on Twitter. The Kaduna state government imposed a 24-hour curfew on Sunday after violence broke out on the streets of the state's capital city, also called Kaduna. |

The National Fire Agency cited the Cabinet spokesman's office as saying 22 people were killed and 171 injured in the disaster. |

Spain 'dismayed' by Saudi reports on Khashoggi case Posted: 20 Oct 2018 07:05 AM PDT Spain's government said on Saturday it was "dismayed" by information from Riyadh about the death of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. "The Spanish government is dismayed by early reports from the Saudi prosecutor about the death of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, and offers its most sincere condolences to his family," Spain said in a statement. It also echoed a call from U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres for a thorough and transparent investigation to bring to justice those responsible for the incident, which has caused an international outcry. |

But the benefit for most women was small, raising questions about whether the treatment is worth its high cost and side effects. |
Counting under way in Afghan poll marred by deadly violence, chaos Posted: 20 Oct 2018 12:20 PM PDT Afghan election workers began counting votes on Saturday following a partial legislative ballot tarnished by scores of deadly militant attacks, technical glitches and administrative chaos. Nearly 170 people -- civilians and security forces -- were killed or wounded in election-related violence, official figures showed, and there are fears of more bloodshed when voting resumes Sunday in 401 polling centres. "Inevitable" problems with biometric verification devices, which were introduced at the eleventh hour, as well as missing voter registration lists and lack of staffing delayed or even prevented voting at those polling sites, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) told reporters. |
Posted: 20 Oct 2018 10:00 AM PDT This is One Good Thing , a weekly column where we tell you about one of the few nice things that happened this week. Halloween is fast approaching and while you may think your planned costume's impressive, there's a very good chance it won't top this fifth grader who dressed as a baked potato. Reddit user seal2781, a 24-year-old named Celia, recently shared a throwback Halloween picture from 2004 — the year she followed her heart and dressed as a baked potato wrapped in foil with a li'l pat of butter on top. Precious! Delicious! All around wholesome! The costume is one of the closest things we've seen to absolute Halloween perfection, and the kind of ensemble we should all strive to put together this time of year. If you're having doubts about how great it is, we're not exaggerating. See for yourself... SEE ALSO: This Kevin from 'The Office' Halloween costume for babies needs to exist IRL Celia told Mashable via Reddit that she fashioned the wearable baked potato for her elementary school Halloween costume contest. The costume won first prize and for that, she received a whole $5! "The day before the contest I decided I wanted to be a baked potato," she wrote. "I'm not really sure why — I just thought it would be funny." She says her dad Ron helped make the costume out of cardboard boxes. "We covered the boxes in wide plastic wrap to hold it all together, and then covered it in foil and added the fluff and brown paper 'skin.' The pad of butter was just a small pizza box covered in yellow cellophane paper." The baked potato has everything you'd want from a good costume. The homemade aspect shows off your resourceful side, it'll give people a good laugh, and you'll also stand out from a crowd of store bought superheroes, princesses, and more. Though it does have one downfall... "The main thing I remember about the costume was how hot it was. I really felt like a baked potato wearing it," Celia said. But still, an overall success. Celia's family has been cranking out next-level costumes for years, she explained, recalling her brother's most memorable ensemble: a massive five-foot tall baseball bat. Stunning. Royal tour: Duke and Duchess of Sussex unveil Sydney's Anzac memorial Posted: 19 Oct 2018 09:45 PM PDT The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have paid tribute to Australia's war dead as they attended the unveiling of an Anzac memorial 84 years in the making. The Anzac Memorial in Sydney's Hyde Park, which commemorates the sacrifices made by those who served for Australia and New Zealand, was designed in the 1930s by Bruce Dellitt. But following the Great Depression, the finances were not available to make Mr Dellitt's vision - including a four-tier cascading waterfall on the Liverpool Street side of the monument - a reality. The Duke, wearing the tropical dress of his regiment, the Blues and Royals, with medals, KCVO and sword, and Duchess, wearing an Emilia Wickstead dress and Philip Tracey hat, were met by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Premier of New South Wales Gladys Berejiklian and David Elliott, minister for Veterans Affairs on an overcast Sydney morning. There were also crowds along Liverpool Street, while more people - and a cardboard cutout of Harry and Meghan - watched on from balconies as the royals arrived. The girls, aged nine, are from the Koomurri Aboriginal Dance Troupe and both said they were nervous about meeting and performing for Harry and Meghan. Krystal, who did an Aboriginal art floral painting, said: "They said hi and 'nice to meet you'." The medallion, presented by Sienna, said "play the game", the motto of the Beverly Hills public school which they attend. The Sussexes will visit the Hall Of Service, which contains 1,700 soil samples from each town, suburb and district in New South Wales listed as an address for First World War enlistees. The completion of the extension, which cost £22 million, coincides with the 100th anniversary of the cessation of hostilities in the war. |
Blast kills five civilians at scene of shootout in Kashmir Posted: 21 Oct 2018 09:34 AM PDT Indian police said "leftover explosives" were responsible for a blast in Kashmir that killed at least five civilians Sunday as they protested against government forces shooting dead three alleged militants. Protesters had surged the site of a shootout in southern Kulgam town, chanting slogans against Indian rule and hurling rocks at troops as they fired at unidentified gunmen. Three alleged rebels were shot dead in the exchange but a subsequent explosion at the scene killed five demonstrators, said inspector-general of police Swayam Prakash Pani. |

Long queues as Afghan voters defy election day attacks, delays Posted: 20 Oct 2018 11:00 AM PDT A suicide bomber killed 15 people in Kabul, the most serious of a series of smaller-scale attacks that caused dozens of casualties across the country but did not deter voters who endured long queues to cast their ballot. "Today the people gave an unanswerable response to the enemies of Afghanistan," government spokesman Haroon Chakansuri told reporters. Voting should have been over by the time the suicide bomber struck a polling station in the north of Kabul, killing 10 civilians and five police, but polling stations were kept open longer than normal to cope with large numbers of people who had been unable to cast ballots. |

Worried Britons to rally for new Brexit vote Posted: 19 Oct 2018 06:55 PM PDT Britons dreading life outside Europe will rally from all corners to London Saturday to try to stop their country's looming breakup with the EU. The march on parliament is set to be a noisy and festive affair uniting tens of thousands in the seemingly hopeless task of convincing Prime Minister Theresa May to hold a second Brexit referendum. Organisers of the so-called People's Vote March are asking people to dress up their favourite pets in costumes so that they could bark along the scenic route through the historic heart of London. |
Saudi Arabia calls Khashoggi killing 'grave mistake,' says prince not aware Posted: 21 Oct 2018 03:57 PM PDT The comments from Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir were some of the most direct yet from Riyadh, which has given multiple and conflicting accounts about Khashoggi's killing on Oct. 2, first denying his death and later admitting it amid an international outcry. The weeks of denial and lack of credible evidence in the face of allegations from Turkish officials that Khashoggi had been killed have shaken global confidence in ties with the world's top oil exporter. U.S. Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin said Saudi Arabia's admission that the Washington Post columnist was killed in a fistfight was a "good first step but not enough," though he added it was premature to discuss sanctions against Riyadh. |

The police gave no figures for how many showed up for the massive march and rally outside parliament aimed at pressing the government into holding a second Brexit vote. London Mayor Sadiq Khan called Saturday "an historic moment in our democracy" that united "every corner of our country and every section of our society". |

The royal couple have had a gruelling schedule since arriving in Australia on Monday, visiting Sydney, Melbourne and the regional town of Dubbo, as well as opening the Olympic-style Invictus Games for disabled and wounded soldiers. "After a busy programme, The Duke and Duchess have decided to cut back The Duchess's schedule slightly for the next couple of days, ahead of the final week and a half of the tour," Kensington Palace said in a statement. |

Israel arrests Palestinian officials suspected of abduction: lawyers Posted: 21 Oct 2018 01:32 PM PDT Israel has arrested two officials from the Palestinian Authority over suspicions they helped abduct a Palestinian resident of Jerusalem, their lawyers said on Sunday. The two men taken into custody by Israel were Adnan Gheith, who holds the largely ceremonial post of Palestinian-appointed governor of Jerusalem, and Jihad Al-Faqeeh, the head of Palestinian intelligence in the city. The Palestinian Authority condemned what it said was an "abduction" of the two Palestinian officials, but it did not comment on the specifics of the charges. |
