'El Chapo' dreamed of biopic for years before capture, says trial witness

Posted: 14 Jan 2019 03:17 PM PST

'El Chapo' dreamed of biopic for years before capture, says trial witnessAlex Cifuentes, Guzman's self-described one-time "right hand man," said he learned about a planned movie project while living with Guzman in the mountains of his boss' home state of Sinaloa from 2007 to 2009. Colombian-born Cifuentes is one of about a dozen witnesses who have so far testified against Guzman after striking deals with U.S. prosecutors, in a trial that has provided a window into the secretive world of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the world's most powerful drug trafficking organization. The alleged kingpin's silver screen dreams first surfaced after Penn wrote a story for Rolling Stone magazine in 2016 about traveling with Del Castillo to meet Guzman at a forest hideout, not long after Guzman had escaped from a Mexican prison through a tunnel.

Divers find cockpit voice recorder from Lion Air jet crash in Indonesia

Posted: 13 Jan 2019 10:17 PM PST

Divers find cockpit voice recorder from Lion Air jet crash in IndonesiaNavy divers have recovered the cockpit voice recorder of the Lion Air jet that crashed into the Java Sea in October, Indonesian officials said on Monday, in a possible boost to the accident investigation. Ridwan Djamaluddin, a deputy maritime minister, told reporters that remains of some of the 189 people who died in the crash were also discovered at the seabed location. "We got confirmation this morning from the National Transportation Safety Committee's chairman," he said. A spokesman for the Indonesian navy's western fleet, Lt. Col. Agung Nugroho, said divers using high-tech "ping locator" equipment had started a new search effort on Friday and found the voice recorder beneath 26 feet of seabed mud. The plane crashed in waters 98 feet deep. The device is being transported to a navy port in Jakarta, Nugroho said, and will be handed over to the transportation safety committee, which is overseeing the accident investigation. Jakarta plane crash: Flight Lion Air JT610 "This is good news, especially for us who lost our loved ones," said Irianto, the father of Rio Nanda Pratama, a doctor who died in the crash. "Even though we don't yet know the contents of the CVR, this is some relief from our despair," he said. The 2-month-old Boeing 737 MAX 8 jet plunged into the Java Sea just minutes after taking off from Jakarta on Oct. 29, killing everyone on board. The cockpit data recorder was recovered within days of the crash and showed that the jet's airspeed indicator had malfunctioned on its last four flights.  An Indonesian National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT) official examines a turbine engine from Lion Air flight JT610 at Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta Credit: Reuters If the voice recorder is undamaged, it could provide valuable additional information to investigators. The Lion Air crash was the worst airline disaster in Indonesia since 1997, when 234 people died on a Garuda flight near Medan. In December 2014, an AirAsia flight from Surabaya to Singapore plunged into the sea, killing all 162 people on board. Lion Air is one of Indonesia's youngest airlines but has grown rapidly, flying to dozens of domestic and international destinations. It has been expanding aggressively in Southeast Asia, a fast-growing region of more than 600 million people.

The district offered Friday to "add nearly 1,200 more educators — teachers, counselors, nurses and librarians — in schools, reducing class size in thousands of classrooms." The district also offered to place a 39-student limit on class sizes and to raise teachers' salaries by 6 percent.

Yemen ceasefire under strain as Houthi rebels boycott talks, threaten further drone attacks

Posted: 13 Jan 2019 06:12 AM PST

Yemen ceasefire under strain as Houthi rebels boycott talks, threaten further drone attacksA nascent truce in the Yemeni city of Hodeidah was dealt a fresh blow over the weekend as Houthi rebels boycotted a UN-brokered peace talks and threatened further drone strikes against pro-government forces.   The threat came days after a Houthi drone attack on a government military parade in the southern province of Lahaj killed several people. A senior intelligence official injured in that attack died of his wounds on Sunday. Yahya Sarea, a Houthi spokesman, called the strike a "legitimate operation against aggression." He said Houthis were working to amass a stockpile of locally manufactured drones. "Soon there will be enough in the strategic stockpile to launch more than one drone operation in multiple battle fronts at the same time," Sarea told reporters in the Houthi-held capital Sanaa.  Leaders of the Iran-backed rebel faction also refused to attend a meeting with the head of the UN ceasefire monitoring team in the strategic port of Hodeida on Sunday. Houthi fighters in Hodeidah in December Credit: ABDULJABBAR ZEYAD/REUTERS  Mohammed Abdelsalam, a Houthi negotiator, said his delegation boycotted the meeting because Patrick Cammaert, the retired Dutch general who heads the monitoring team, had steered "from the course of the agreement by implementing other agendas". Writing on Twitter, he appealed to  Martin Griffiths, the UN envoy for Yemen, to deal with the issue, and warned that if left unaddressed, "it is going to be difficult to discuss any other matter". The diplomatic hold-up came after fighting erupted between Houthis and Saudi-backed government forces in Hodeidah on Saturday, shattering a fragile ceasefire.  The rebel-held port city, which is a lifeline for the delivery of desperately needed humanitarian aid, was for months the main front line in war after government forces supported by Saudi Arabia and its allies launched an offensive to capture it in June. The sides agreed to a ceasefire for Hodeida in talks chaired by Mr Griffiths in Sweden in December.  The talks in Rimbo, Sweden, were the first face-to-face meeting between the chief belligerents in years.  Yemen has experienced a humanitarian meltdown since a Saudi-led coalition began an aerial campaign against Houthi rebels in March 2015. Around 24 million Yemenis, or 80 percent of the population, are in need of  aid. As many as 85,000 children are thought to have starved to death since the war began.
