| Missing yoga teacher found alive two weeks after disappearing in Hawaii forest Posted: 25 May 2019 02:57 AM PDT  A yoga instructor who had been missing in a Hawaiian forest for more than two weeks has been found alive.Amanda Eller, 35, was last seen early on the morning of 8 May as she set off on a hike in the Makawao Forest Reserve trail on Maui island.Rescuers found her safe and in remarkably good condition after a helicopter team spotted her waving from the stream bed of a ravine around 5pm on Friday.Ms Eller's friends and volunteers who joined the 17-day search said she had lost her shoes in the jungle and was suffering from sunburn, but otherwise had no other injuries. The physical therapist had survived on water and local plants, one said."She was very alert, she knew her father's phone number, she knew who she was, where she was, knew exactly how long she had been out there," her friend Chris Berquist told ABC News. "I've never felt something quite that overpowering."Ms Eller was able to call her father from the helicopter that lifted her out of the ravine and took her to Maui Memorial Hospital to be checked over.The woman's family – who had feared she could have been "intercepted" by someone after she disappeared – had raised the reward for finding her from $10,000 to $50,000 only hours before she was found.Hundreds of volunteers, including many experienced hikers, had joined the effort to locate the missing yoga teacher – originally from the US state of Maryland but living and working in Hawaii. Police dogs and drones had been used to scour the forest.Ms Eller was last seen by her boyfriend Benjamin Konkol before she set off on a morning hike without her phone. He told ABC News last week that evidence suggested "she's definitely still here, we just haven't found her yet".Her mother Julia said: "I do firmly believe that Amanda is still alive, but occasionally those doubts creep in and I try to dispel them as I can."Hawaiian authorities also released surveillance footage last week showing Ms Eller at the Ha'iku Post Office and a local store on the morning she went missing. Police found her white Toyota RAV4 in the parking lot of the forest trail soon after she was declared missing.Although it is not yet known how she came to get stuck in the ravine, Mr Berquist said the spot where she was finally found was "way off the beaten track".He said: "She was not injured. The House Speaker continues to hew to this line, despite the increasing disagreements of her fellow party members. While a poll conducted last month said 39 percent of Americans favor impeachment hearings, a full 70 percent of Democrats believe that should be the next move.This has left Pelosi juggling the different party factions, a job she's carried for over a decade. "Let me be very clear: the president's behavior in terms of his obstruction of justice, the things that he is doing, is very clear. It's in plain sight. It cannot be denied. Ignoring subpoenas, obstruction of justice. Yes, these could be impeachable offenses," she told reporters, emphasizing that she does not think the administration is innocent. She followed it up, however, by repeating that impeachment is not a goal. "You might understand it better if you remember these three things. We want to follow the facts, to get the truth to the American people with a recognition (2) that no one is above the law, and (3) that the president is engaged in a coverup. | Violence and disruption against abortion clinics at highest rates since 1999 Posted: 25 May 2019 09:16 AM PDT  Violence and disruption against abortion clinics in the US increased to its highest levels since the 1990s last year, a report by the National Abortion Federation has found.The increase in violence was attributed, at least in part, to president Donald Trump and his administration's rhetoric.The report noted a significant increase in obstruction, vandalism, and trespassing, with 1,135 incidents of trespassing recorded in 2018 - the most since the NAF began tracking the crime in 1999.There were also 3,038 instances of obstruction, a 78 per cent increase compared to the previous year, and nearly 100,000 instances of picketing."Anti-choice individuals and groups have been emboldened by the rhetoric of president Trump, vice president Pence, and other elected officials and we are seeing this play out in more instances of activities meant to intimidate abortion providers and disrupt patient services," said Dr Katherine Hancock Ragsdale, who serves as interim president and CEO of NAF.She added: "Demonising health care providers and women who rely on them for abortion care has become one of the go-to tactics for anti-choice politicians. Those lies have consequences and it is not the anti-choice politicians who are facing those consequences; it is those who are denied abortion care and the providers targeted by threats, harassment, and violence who are. It is time for the demonizing of abortion providers and their patients to end."Given the political climate and the increase in hate incidents throughout the country, it is more important than ever that law enforcement and prosecutors appropriately respond to anti-abortion criminal activity."The study did note a decrease in stalking, burglary, assault, and battery against abortion providers.It comes during a fresh wave of anti-abortion legislation such as the Alabama abortion ban, which is currently being contested in a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood, and "heartbeat bills" which ban elective abortion after a foetal heartbeat is detectable.As a foetal heartbeat is first detectable at six weeks - a point where many pregnant people may not even know they are pregnant - these initiatives are seen as a back-door abortion ban and are also being contested in court. Politicians in support of banning abortion hope these cases will rise to the Supreme Court of the United States and lead to an overturning of Roe V Wade, which set the precedent for elective abortion until the end of the second trimester in the US.

| How Democrats Can Stop Playing Defense on Abortion Posted: 24 May 2019 07:47 PM PDT  Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily BeastThe Democrats must defeat the GOP's latest effort to impose the Bible as the law of America (which I have long referred to as "Christian Sharia law") as it relates to women's reproductive freedom. And the best way to do that is by championing a constitutional amendment—on both the national and state levels—to protect a woman's right to control her own body. GOP activists have long openly shared their dream to overturn Roe v. Wade and to enact laws that will unduly restrict abortion in America. And given the recent changes to the Supreme Court's composition thanks to Donald Trump, they have been emboldened to new heights. That's why we are seeing the recent wave of GOP state laws that restrict women's reproductive liberty, such as ones in Georgia, Mississippi, and Ohio that ban abortion at six weeks into pregnancy–often before a woman is even aware she's pregnant. And of course the headline-grabbing, extreme Alabama law that bans abortion even in case of rape or incest, requiring a woman who is the victim of rape to carry the rapist's child to term. Alabama Abortion Tragedy: the Cheerleader, the Coach, and a Coat HangerNow if you think the Alabama law is an outlier, you've not been paying attention. This is where the GOP has been heading. This position broke through on the national level during the 2016 campaign in the very first GOP presidential debate held in August 2015. There, Marco Rubio announced he didn't support what have been called the "three exceptions" to abortion: rape, incest, and life of the mother. Rather, he only favored allowing abortion if life of the mother was at risk. At the time, fellow GOP presidential candidate Scott Walker shared the exact same view, and not only did neither face a backlash from the GOP base, the 2016 GOP platform did not include exceptions for rape or incest.So, stunning as this sounds in 2019, the last, best hope to stop the GOP from achieving its goal banning abortion in state after state is to pass a constitutional amendment to enshrine the right of a woman to control her own body. Now, first the good news. Many of the leading 2020 Democratic candidates already have declared that in their view, women have a constitutional right to an abortion. Elizabeth Warren couldn't have been more clear on that point with her recent tweet, "Access to safe, legal abortion is a constitutional RIGHT. Full stop."Bernie Sanders echoed that sentiment with his tweet, "Abortion is a constitutional right," as did Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who wrote, "I believe access to abortion is a constitutionally protected right." And Cory Booker called the Alabama law "a blatant assault on constitutional and human rights."The prescription these Democrats have espoused to protect a woman's right to control her own body range from codifying Roe v. Wade into federal law to, in Booker's case, calling for the creation of a White House Office of Reproductive Freedom. But it's time they take it one step further and champion an actual amendment to the Constitution to make it clear that just as people have a right to bear arms, women have the constitutionally guaranteed right to control their own bodies. Yes, I get that enacting a constitutional amendment on any issue, let alone a divisive one like abortion, is currently impossible. We simply can't get the necessary two-thirds of Congress to first approve such an amendment, and then three-quarters of the state legislatures to sign on. Nor are the prospects of a constitutional convention better. But if the leading 2020 Democrats make this a key issue, it could begin to lay the groundwork to build public support for such an amendment in years to come--the same way the GOP has built support over decades to ban abortion in its own ranks that is now manifesting as laws.But in the meantime, what can be done—and possibly in time for the 2020 election--is putting into action the process to amend state constitutions to recognize a constitutional right to reproductive freedom. In fact, Vermont is currently considering just such an amendment, which would make the Green Mountain state the first to enshrine abortion access in its constitution by ensuring that "every Vermonter is afforded personal reproductive liberty."Other states should follow Vermont's lead. This can be accomplished by a ballot initiative in key swing states that provide for such measures including Michigan, Florida, and Wisconsin. With recent polls showing that a solid majority of Americans oppose the GOP's extreme laws to control women's bodies, this could boost turnout for the Democratic candidates in those states. We saw a similar approach in 2004 when the GOP championed its despicable ballot initiatives to ban same-sex marriages in 11 states. The result was that there was a spike in GOP turnout in all 11 states in 2004 when compared to the 2000 election. (Although the overall impact though on the 2004 presidential race is still debatable.) But this fight goes far beyond potentially increasing turnout in key 2020 states. It's about ensuring that women have absolute control to their own bodies. The women of our nation should never have to fear that the GOP-controlled Supreme Court or GOP-controlled state legislatures will one day restrict freedom to control their own uterus. And the only way to truly accomplish this is by adding a 28th Amendment to our Constitution that guarantees women reproductive liberty. Baroness Sugg, a 42-year-old former operations chief to David Cameron, will tell delegates at a conference on gender in Oslo that the UK must "stand strongly against the rollback of women's rights." The move follows a series of announcements effectively banning abortions in Alabama and Georgia, while the Trump administration's "global gag rule" is starving charities of funding around the world. And at the United Nations in April, a clause referencing access to reproductive health was removed in a resolution condemning sexual violence because of the United States. Trump's administration opposed the statement because they said the wording implied support for abortions. "We must also stand strongly against the rollback of women's rights," Baroness Sugg will tell the audience. "That's why I'm proud UK aid will continue to champion, defend and support access to life-saving sexual and reproductive health services for the world's poorest women and girls and those affected by humanitarian crises." "The current politics of polarization can sometimes lead to adverse effects on the fight for women's rights," Natalia Kanem executive director of UNFPA, told The Telegraph. In America, conservative forces have the ear of the Trump administration. The Mexico City policy, known as the "global gag rule", has been introduced by every Republican president since Ronald Reagan, but Trump has dramatically expanded its scope. The policy effectively prevents any charity which relies on US funding from offering or even advising on termination. Harnessing Africa's baby boom | Women seize power over their fertility – and future The reach is enormous – the global gag applies to roughly $8.8 billion of funding. Previous versions of the policy placed restrictions on some $575 million. While this money is still spent on global health, it shifts funding away from some of the most effective initiatives to others such as faith based groups opposed to abortions. "I don't think anyone was taken by surprise that President Trump reintroduced the global gag rule, but we were surprised by the massive expansion," said Luisa Orza, HIV and gender lead at Frontline AIDS, an organisation which has never previously been impacted by the gag policy. Access to contraception "There's huge alarm building as suddenly organisations are being asked to compromise their work or sacrifice potential funding," she said. "We made the decision as an organisation that we don't want to have our work on sexual health and reproductive health compromised. "We really value the UK government's ongoing commitment to women's and girls' rights and empowerment, including on sexual and reproductive health. They have been unequivocal on their stance on safe abortion." Many leading charities have lost huge chunks of funding – despite countries such as Denmark, Canada, Belgium and Sweden stepping up. Marie Stopes International (MSI), one of the world's largest family planning organisations, lost 17 per cent of their funding overnight when the policy came into force in 2017. Abortion laws around the world "But the impact will be far more than financial," Sarah Shaw, head of advocacy at MSI, told The Telegraph. "If a girl does not have access to reproductive health services at the crucial moment that can have a lifelong on effect. "And people who believe women should not have access to these services are having their opinions validated by the leader of the free world. There's a chilling effect that I think will be really hard to recover from," she added. The UK government has a strong record supporting family planning and abortion rights at home and abroad but a near-total ban on termination remains in Northern Ireland. | Trump deploys 1,500 soldiers to Middle East after insisting more troops were unnecessary Posted: 24 May 2019 02:15 PM PDT  The US will order more troops to the Middle East, Donald Trump has said, despite just a day earlier saying he thought further deployments in the region were unnecessary.Mr Trump said around 1,500 troops would be sent amid rising tensions with Iran. Congressional aides confirmed that Congress was notified of the new plan before it was announced. "We want to have protection. The Middle East, we're going to be sending a relatively small number of troops," Mr Trump told reporters at the White House before boarding a plane for Japan. "Mostly protective. Some very talented people are going to the Middle East right now. And we'll see how – we'll see what happens."A defence official later claimed that the actual number of incoming troops was 900, which will be to added to 600 troops whose deployment in the region will be extended.The announcement comes at the end of a week in which several numbers were floated for troop increases in the region.On Thursday, the acting defense secretary, Patrick Shanahan, denied reports that between 5,000 to 10,000 US troops could be sent to defend against the potential threat from Iran. "There is no 10,000, there's no 5,000, and that's not accurate," he told reporters.Representative Adam Smith, who serves as the House Armed Services Committee Chairman, issued a statement calling the increase in troops an "unsettling" move."Without a clearly articulated strategy, adding more personnel and mission systems seems unwise, and appears to be a blatant and heavy-handed move to further escalate tensions with Iran," Mr Smith said."I look forward to hearing from Acting Defense Secretary Shanahan how this decision complements a broader strategy in the region, which focuses on de-escalation and diplomacy first," his statement continued.

Drillers cut five oil rigs in the week to May 24, bringing the total count down to 797, the lowest since March 2018, General Electric Co's Baker Hughes energy services firm said in its closely followed report on Friday. The rig count, an early indicator of future output, has declined over the past five months as independent exploration and production companies cut spending on new drilling as they focus more on earnings growth instead of increased output.
