Hong Kong leader urges people not to 'demonize' security law Posted: 15 Jun 2020 10:23 PM PDT Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said Tuesday that she hopes opponents of a new national security law being imposed by China do not "demonize and stigmatize" the legislation because doing so would mean pitting themselves against residents of the semi-autonomous Chinese territory. "The people of Hong Kong want to see stability again, they want a safe environment where they can work and live," Lam told reporters. China's ceremonial parliament in May approved the decision to enact a national security law in Hong Kong, aimed at curbing subversive, secessionist, terrorist and foreign intervention activities in the city following months of anti-government protests last year. |
Berlin, NATO warn against US troop cuts in Germany Posted: 16 Jun 2020 10:32 AM PDT Germany and NATO on Tuesday underlined the importance of US troops in Germany for security on both sides of the Atlantic, a day after President Donald Trump announced he would slash the number stationed there. "We think that the US presence in Germany is important for the security not just of Germany but also for the security of the United States and especially for the security of Europe," German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said during a visit to Poland. |

Hong Kong security law will not be retroactive: Chinese official Posted: 15 Jun 2020 12:30 AM PDT Hong Kong's national security legislation will not punish people retroactively, a senior Chinese official said on Monday, touching on a key question raised by local residents, diplomats and foreign investors over the controversial law. Deng Zhonghua, deputy director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, also said while Beijing must be able to have jurisdiction over the most serious national security cases, the financial hub should be responsible for most enforcement work. Beijing last month moved to directly impose the legislation on Hong Kong in a bid to tackle secession, subversion and foreign interference in the city. |

Oxford Researchers Identify First Drug Proven to Reduce COVID-19 Fatalities Posted: 16 Jun 2020 05:42 AM PDT Researchers at the University of Oxford announced Tuesday that they had found the first proven life-saving coronavirus treatment, after a clinical trial of dexamethasone, a low-cost steroid treatment, cut the risk of death by one-third for coronavirus patients on ventilators and one-fifth for those on oxygen. The study, part of the U.K.'s "Recovery Trial" project to find existing treatments for COVID-19, compared approximately 2,000 hospital patients that were given dexamethasone with nearly 4,000 who did not get the drug. For patients on ventilators, it cut death risk from 40 percent to 28 percent, while patients who required oxygen saw their death risk fall from 25 percent to 20 percent.> Breaking: Oxford researchers find 1st drug proven to reduce Covid deaths > > Low-cost steroid dexamethasone reduced death by a third in ventilated patients> > If used from start of the pandemic it could have saved apprx 5,000 lives in UK> > It costs about £5 -- about £40 saves a life pic.twitter.com/AuhXcYbjyM> > -- Rhys Blakely (@rhysblakely) June 16, 2020"This is the only drug so far that has been shown to reduce mortality, and it reduces it significantly. It's a major breakthrough," Dr. Peter Horby, chief investigator on the study, said in a statement. Head researcher Dr. Martin Landray added that the drug's low cost would lead to an even greater impact."There is a clear, clear benefit. The treatment is up to 10 days of dexamethasone and it costs about £5 per patient. So essentially it costs £35 to save a life. This is a drug that is globally available," he said, emphasizing that for every eight patients on ventilators that are treated with the drug, one life could be saved. The only other drug that has shown promise in a clinical setting for treating coronavirus is remdesivir, an experimental antiviral treatment that has shown promise in treating patients early in the infection's onset.Researchers at Oxford have also made significant headway with a vaccine after positive trials with rhesus macaque monkeys — who after 28 days were healthy despite being exposed to heavy quantities of coronavirus that sickened the control group.Oxford University researcher John Bell, who is leading the project, said in May that the vaccine's ability to generate "strong antibody responses is probably going to be OK," but said the verdict was still out on whether it would be a safe treatment."We're pretty sure we'll get a signal by June about whether this works or not," Bell stated. |
US Supreme Court halts Texas execution over clergy question Posted: 15 Jun 2020 09:04 PM PDT The U.S. Supreme Court granted a reprieve Tuesday to a Texas inmate scheduled to die for fatally stabbing an 85-year-old woman more than two decades ago, continuing a more than four-month delay of executions in the nation's busiest death penalty state during the coronavirus pandemic. The justices blocked Ruben Gutierrez's execution about an hour before he could have been executed. Gutierrez's attorneys had argued his religious rights are being violated because the prison system won't allow a chaplain to accompany him in the death chamber. |

U.S. to impose sanctions aimed at blocking Syria military victory Posted: 16 Jun 2020 10:52 AM PDT The United States will impose sanctions on Wednesday aimed at cutting off revenue for Syrian President Bashar al Assad's government in a bid to push it back into United Nations-led negotiations and broker an end to the country's nearly decade-long war. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Kelly Craft told the Security Council on Tuesday that Washington would implement the measures to "prevent the Assad regime from securing a military victory." "Our aim is to deprive the Assad regime of the revenue and the support it has used to commit the large-scale atrocities and human rights violations that prevent a political resolution and severely diminish the prospects for peace," Craft said. |

Biden posts massive $81M cash haul for May Posted: 15 Jun 2020 12:03 PM PDT Joe Biden pulled in $81 million for his election effort in the month of May, a massive sum that shows the extent to which Democrats have unified behind the former vice president as he seeks to defeat Republican President Donald Trump. Then on Monday, he broke his own single-event record by taking in $6 million during an online fundraiser with Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a former primary campaign rival, that was attended by over 600 people. The amount of money Biden is pulling in suggests he won't have difficulty amassing the resources needed to compete with Trump, even in the midst of a pandemic that has tanked markets, forced many out of work, or otherwise crimped peoples' ability to spend. |
