| Federal Prosecutor Resigns from Durham Probe over Alleged Pressure to Wrap Up ahead of Election Posted: 11 Sep 2020 01:13 PM PDT  Nora Dannehy, a top federal prosecutor working with U.S. Attorney John Durham on his investigation into the origins of the FBI's Russia probe, resigned from the Justice Department on Thursday, partially over concern that Attorney General William Barr is pressuring investigators to conclude their work prematurely for political purposes.Dannehy, a career prosecutor who has worked with Durham over decades and joined his team in spring of last year, submitted her resignation in an email Thursday night that made no mention of political pressure, the Hartford Courant first reported.Durham was appointed by Barr last year to investigate the origins of the FBI's Russia probe. His appointment came just after former Special Counsel Robert Mueller submitted his final report to the Justice Department concluding that the Trump campaign did not conspire with Russians to influence the election, but could not reach a conclusion on whether President Trump committed obstruction of justice.Colleagues reportedly said that Dannehy, who does not support President Trump, was concerned about pressure from Barr to produce a report on the investigation before the presidential election in November and had been considering leaving the probe for weeks.Additionally, some Durham associates suggested that Durham is under pressure to produce results in some form before the election, citing concerns that the probe could be dissolved should Trump lose in November, the paper reported.Last month, Durham announced the first criminal charge resulting from his investigation against former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith, who pled guilty to doctoring an email that investigators relied on to justify an application to surveil a former Trump campaign adviser, according to court documents.Barr suggested this week that more charges could be forthcoming from Durham's probe of the Russia investigation."Yeah, there could be," Barr said during an interview with NBC News, but he declined to say whether additional charges would be announced before Election Day.

| Tropical development likely in East Pacific as system churns towards favorable conditions Posted: 11 Sep 2020 11:05 AM PDT  After almost a week of quiet conditions following Tropical Storm Julio, AccuWeather meteorologists are monitoring a couple of tropical features brewing in the East Pacific Ocean.According to AccuWeather Tropical Expert Dan Kottlowski, forecasters will be focusing on an area of disturbed weather located about 300 miles to the southwest of the southwestern coast of Mexico.This feature has been designated Invest 92E by the National Hurricane Center. Invest 92E is expected to track slowly to the west-northwest through this weekend and into the beginning of next week. This path will take the storm through the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean and into an area of low to moderate wind shear.Wind shear is the change in speed or direction of the wind at different levels in the atmosphere and plays a strong role in the development and organization of tropical systems.CLICK HERE FOR THE FREE ACCUWEATHER APPThis environment could allow this tropical disturbance to become more organized by the beginning of next week, and there is a medium to high potential that 92E evolves into a tropical depression, or even a tropical storm, by Sunday or Monday."92E is expected to track to the west-northwest though the beginning of the week, away from the western coast of Mexico, and will not bring any direct impacts to land in the near future," added Kottlowski.While the storm is located far enough away from the coast that torrential rain and gusty winds will not reach Mexico, as the storm becomes more organized, it can kick up rough surf and an increased risk for rip currents along the Mexican coast.Shipping interests should monitor this system into at least the middle of next week to avoid the dangers of tracking through downpours, strong wind gusts and rough surf.The next system to reach tropical storm status, or to gain sustained winds of at least 63 km/h (39 mph), in the East Pacific basin would be given the name Karina."Another area of disturbed weather [is located] 400 miles to the southwest of the southern tip of Baja California and remains disorganized," said Kottlowski. Musa Lomaev says he survived what appears to be the latest in a string of brazen attacks, two of them fatal, against dissidents in Europe who have railed against the brutal Kremlin-backed ruler Ramzan Kadyrov.Kadyrov, a ruthless strongman who has previously discussed his willingness to die for Russian President Vladimir Putin, has repeatedly been accused of ordering torture, the detention of gay men, and assassination attempts on his critics. Although he has always denied those allegations, he is also known to make frequent and violent threats against anyone who dares to criticize him.Four of the Russian exiles who have been targeted in Europe this year have one main thing in common—they had been vocally critical of the notorious ruler of Chechnya, a republic of south eastern Russia. Two of them, Imran Aliyev and Mamikhan Umarov, were killed. A third, Tumso Abdurakhmanov, was able to overpower his would-be attacker in Sweden, and survived.Russian Teen Forced to Rape Himself on Camera for Criticizing 'Putin's Soldier'On Friday, Finnish authorities reportedly arrested a suspect in connection to another possible assassination attempt on Lomaev, a fourth Chechen blogger. According to Finnish station Radio Liberty, Lomaev claims a suspect was detained on Thursday after, he says, a price-tag of $500,000 was placed on his head.Lomaev runs a YouTube channel where he posts videos criticizing the Kadyrov regime, and says that he escaped Russia after being kidnapped and tortured in 2004 by the police, who accused him of carrying out terrorist acts against the government. As yet, there are no further details on the reported attempt on his life.Earlier this year, the Financial Times reported the assassination of Chechen blogger Mamikhan Umarov. He was reportedly killed two days after posting a video on YouTube goading Kadyrov into murdering him, in which he said: "Come and stop me!... Send your toughest guy, I'll tear him a new one." He was shot three times on the outskirts of Vienna, and two Russians were later detained.Kadyrov tried to deflect accusations of his government's involvement by claiming western intelligence services were killing Chechen exiles in an attempt to damage his image. "Don't become puppets, take care of your families. Otherwise the same fate awaits you, and they will blame Kadyrov and his team," he wrote, according to the FT.'Putin's Soldier' Ramzan Kadyrov Threatens Vengeance Against Mike PompeoEarlier in the year, in January, the 44-year-old blogger Imran Aliev was murdered in a hotel room in Lille, France—he had received a reported 135 stab wounds. French police investigating the murder later identified a man who traveled with the victim from Belgium, then fled to Russia after the killing, as the chief suspect.A police official told Business Insider at the time, "We have also collected intelligence about the man that indicates he works closely with Kadyrov, which continues to confirm our suspicion that this was a politically motivated murder linked to Aliev's dissident activities."Tumso Abdurakhmanov, who survived his attack, posted a video of himself standing over the bloodied body of his hammer-wielding assassin. When questioned, the man told Abdurakhmanov, "They have my mother." The head of the Chechen parliament had previously declared a "blood feud" against Abdurakhmanov.Chechnya became one of world's worst human rights violators under Kadyrov, who used Kremlin money to rebuild the republic and has largely been given the freedom to rule how he wants as long as he remains loyal to Putin. That included nearly $3,000 on a "Girl's Night" party, about $1,000 to place an op-ed with Fox News, and dozens more line items before Verma was cut off last year.Politico first reported Verma's excessive spending in March 2019, and her contracts with the consulting firm Nahigian Strategies were soon cut off. But Politico also sparked a congressional probe into those contracts, and investigators sifted through thousands of pages of Verma's emails and billing records. They found that Verma spent more than $3 million over two years in the Trump administration on "handpicked communications consultants used to promote Administrator Verma's public profile and personal brand," congressional Democrats said in a Thursday statement.Among the charges, investigators found Verma spent $115,000 with one consultant who "tried to broker conversations between Verma and well-known Washington reporters," booked conservative media appearances, and even tried to connect her with then-White House communications director Bill Shine, Politico writes. Verma also diverted $13,856 to shoot an "eMedicare" video, including $450 for a makeup artist, and spent at least $3,400 in consulting charges to arrange an appearance on Politico's Women Rule podcast, among many other charges.
