Analysis: 'I have failed' - Kim Jong Un shows tearful side in confronting North Korea's hardships Posted: 12 Oct 2020 09:13 AM PDT North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared to shed tears at the weekend as he thanked citizens for their sacrifices, in the most striking demonstration yet of how he is relying on his "man of the people" persona to tackle his country's deepening crises. Speaking at a military parade on Saturday, Kim became emotional as he paid tribute to troops for their response to national disasters and preventing a coronavirus outbreak and apologised to citizens for failing to raise living standards. "Kim's modesty and candour, and his tears and choking, were all highly unusual, even for someone who publicly acknowledges shortcomings and has an established pattern of being expressive," said Rachel Minyoung Lee, an independent researcher and former open-source North Korea analyst for the U.S. government.

Cal Cunningham surprisingly increases lead in North Carolina Senate race in 1st poll period after texting scandal Posted: 12 Oct 2020 02:58 PM PDT North Carolina's Democratic Senate candidate Cal Cunningham became mired in a scandal earlier this month when he admitted to exchanging romantic text messages with a woman who is not his wife. Yet a new poll conducted by SurveyUSA showed that Cunningham actually increased his lead over the incumbent Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) after the news broke. In the previous poll, Cunningham was up seven, but that jumped to a 10-point advantage in the iteration released Monday. The growing margin is largely thanks to men and younger voters, who have enhanced their support for the challenger. For example, Cunningham went from trailing Tillis by 11 among all men in September, to up two in October. Meanwhile, women and senior voters did shift more to Tillis in the wake of the scandal. But, overall, it does not appear to have drastically altered the state of the race.> Cunningham is losing ground with women and seniors since the sexting scandal but *gaining* ground with men and young voters, per this poll. https://t.co/4naDUG4ZV3> > — Nate Silver (@NateSilver538) October 12, 2020SurveyUSA interviewed 900 adults across North Carolina, 746 of whom are registered to vote in the state, between Oct. 8-11. A margin of error was not reported. China threatens to invade Taiwan and parades one of its citizens as a 'spy' Posted: 12 Oct 2020 06:35 AM PDT Beijing has stepped up its intimidation of Taiwan by releasing a video on state media of a simulated attack on the island and by airing the purported confession of a Taiwanese businessman detained in China on spying charges. The twin-pronged strategy came as Tsai Ing-wen, the Taiwanese president, appeared to offer an olive branch to China amid growing tensions across the Taiwan Strait, urging the Chinese Communist Party to engage in "meaningful dialogue" on an equal basis. President Tsai made the gesture on Saturday during National Day celebrations, describing relations with Beijing as "quite tense" after weeks of China ramping up its air force activity close to Taiwanese airspace and crossing the Taiwan Strait's sensitive mid line, which normally acts as an unofficial buffer zone. But her overtures were immediately rebuffed by Beijing, which has refused to negotiate with Ms Tsai's administration since she was first elected in 2016, and which immediately accused Taiwan of continuing to pursue independence and of having a confrontational mindset.

Greece says Turkey lacks credibility after new sail to disputed waters Posted: 12 Oct 2020 03:33 AM PDT Greece accused rival Turkey of lacking credibility on Monday by sending a survey vessel into contested waters in the eastern Mediterranean, and of orchestrating the partial opening of an abandoned town on ethnically-split Cyprus. Earlier on Monday Turkey issued a maritime advisory that it planned to dispatch the Oruc Reis survey vessel to the region, drawing strong criticism from Greece. Last month, Ankara withdrew the vessel from contested waters in the Eastern Mediterranean to "allow for diplomacy" before an EU summit at which Cyprus had pushed for sanctions and Turkey.
