New security measures (and massive lines) announced for all flights to the US Posted: 28 Jun 2017 01:26 PM PDT 180 airlines flying over 300,000 people a day into the US will have to comply with new "enhanced security measures" for electronic devices, the Department for Homeland Security announced on Wednesday. The new security measures, which have not been described in detail, will need to be implemented at speed by the airlines. Passengers flying on any airline that does not implement the new security measures will not be able to bring anything bigger than a cellphone under the new regulations.
The new measures seem to be the ultimate evolution of a laptop ban that the US announced back in March, which affected passengers on most airlines flying from the Middle East. The new security measures will affect carry-on and checked luggage, the DHS confirmed, but should now allow those airlines affected by the laptop ban to allow passengers to carry laptops on once again, provided the new security measures are implemented. Those security measures have not been specified, but the DHS says that it will be a mixture of visible and behind-the-scenes changes. Among the changes is likely to be deeper scrutiny of individual passengers, as well as more detailed searches of electronic devices. The DHS said that passengers "may want to prepare for a bit more extensive screening process," although an official added that "intensive doesn't always mean slower." Logical additional screening methods could include routine swabs of electronic devices to look for explosive residue -- something that's already done on a case-by-case basis -- as well as requiring passengers in some cases to power up laptops and demonstrate that they're working. According to reporting from multiple news outlets, Israeli intelligence idenitified an ISIS plot to use a laptop bomb to attack an airliner several months ago. That intelligence was behind the laptop ban in March. The source of that intelligence is also reported to have been leaked to Russia by President Trump during a White House meeting. |

Obama on temple sojourn during Indonesia holiday Posted: 28 Jun 2017 09:00 AM PDT Barack Obama took his wife and daughters to the ancient Borobudur temple on Java on Wednesday on a family vacation to Indonesia, where the former US president spent part of his childhood. The Obamas arrived in the city of Yogyakarta in central Java and headed straight to explore the Borobudur, an ancient Buddhist temple built in the 8th and 9th centuries. "Obama is fascinated by Borobudur, and he remembers that he has seen this temple when he was a child," said Edy Setijono, head of the temple management complex, who accompanied the family at the site. |

Justin Korva regularly braved temperatures of 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius) to get to his job at Taco Casa in Rockwell, Texas. The 20-year-old was picked up on his three-mile trek one morning by Andy Mitchell, who posted a picture of pair on Facebook next to a message explaining his journey. |

EU extends Russia economic sanctions Posted: 28 Jun 2017 04:11 AM PDT The European Union on Wednesday formally rolled over damaging economic sanctions against Russia for another six months, saying Moscow had failed to live up to its Ukraine ceasefire commitments. EU leaders endorsed the move last week, charging that Russia had not halted its support for pro-Moscow rebels in eastern Ukraine nor put pressure on them to respect a ceasefire brokered by France and Germany which was meant to help end a deadly conflict dating back to early 2014. The European Council, which groups the EU's 28 member states, said the decision followed a summit briefing on the situation by French and German leaders Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel. |

China launches new class of naval destroyer Posted: 28 Jun 2017 05:38 AM PDT China's military on Wednesday launched a new type of domestically-built destroyer, state media said, the latest addition to the country's rapidly expanding navy. The 10,000-tonne warship was launched at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, the official Xinhua news agency said, making it the first of the People's Liberation Army Navy's "new generation" destroyers. "It is equipped with new air defense, anti-missile, anti-ship and anti-submarine weapons," Xinhua said, without giving further details. |
Protesters across the country oppose GOP's health care plan Posted: 28 Jun 2017 06:33 AM PDT On Tuesday in Pittsburg, Kan., disability rights activists protested against the Senate Republican health care bill that would slash Medicaid funding and roll back Obama's expansion of the program. They protested in Salt Lake City and in Colorado. It was just one small example of the grassroots effort to target Republican senators in their states that's become a feature of the political world under Trump. |

It’s not just you: CNN, New York Times, Reddit, and other sites are all down Posted: 28 Jun 2017 07:20 AM PDT A strange outage has struck a number of extremely popular websites this morning, bringing The New York Times, CNN, Reddit, Pinterest, Etsy, and Amazon to their knees in many areas of the country. The downtime is slamming the coasts particularly hard, with huge numbers of reports coming in from both the East Coast as well as Southern California. The issue appears to be linked to the cloud hosting service Fastly, which supports the backends of all these major web destinations, and has been dealing with a "global event." The error manifests itself in failed page loads and a number of different errors ranging from "Maximum threads" to simple "Could not load" notifications. "Fastly is reporting a global event on our network at this time; multiple teams are responding and investigating," the company's first notice of downtime reads. The company followed up by noting that the it identified the issue and was working on implementing a fix, while monitoring the results. The company notes on its Customers page that it supports many of the sites currently dealing with page load errors and other issues, including NYT, Pinterest, Reddit, Wired, and Business Insider. When the unseen companies that support the entire structure of major websites like these experience downtime it can be a serious issue for everyone involved. Depending on the length of downtime, the cost can be absolutely devastating, but it appears that in this case the company has identified and fixed the issue in a rather rapid manner. |

U.S. worries Russia could step up North Korea support to fill China void Posted: 27 Jun 2017 10:04 AM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - As the United States pressures China to enforce United Nations sanctions on its ally North Korea, Washington is concerned that Russia could provide support to Pyongyang and fill any vacuum left by Beijing, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Tuesday. "I'm concerned that Russia may backfill North Korea," Haley told U.S. lawmakers in Washington. |
Saudis say demands 'non-negotiable' as Qatar, US officials meet Posted: 27 Jun 2017 03:14 PM PDT Saudi Arabia reiterated Tuesday that its demands on Qatar were not negotiable, as US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson held talks with the Qatari foreign minister on the Gulf states crisis. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, who was also in Washington, was unbudging amid attempts by US and Kuwaiti diplomats to mediate the row which has left Qatar, a US ally, isolated under a trade and diplomatic embargo set by its Gulf Arab neighbors. |

Kentucky to allow public schools to teach from the Bible Posted: 28 Jun 2017 11:07 AM PDT Kentucky has signed a law allowing public, state-funded schools to teach courses on the Bible. Governor Matt Bevin participated in the bill signing ceremony in the state capitol building which opened with a Christian prayer. State Representative DJ Johnson said the Bible "really did set the foundation that our founding fathers used to develop documents like the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights," local news station WDRB-TV reported. |

Pope tells new cardinals: be humble, help poor, fight injustice Posted: 28 Jun 2017 09:16 AM PDT By Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis elevated five senior clerics from outside Italy and the Vatican to the top rank of cardinal on Wednesday, urging them to be humble and not forget refugees and victims of war, terrorism and injustice. Appointing new cardinals is one of the most significant powers of the papacy, allowing a pontiff to put his stamp on the future of the 1.2 billion-member Church. Cardinals are the pope's closest advisers in the Vatican and around the world and those under 80 years old are known as "cardinal-electors" because they can choose his successor. |
Israel strikes Hamas bases in Gaza after rocket: officials Posted: 26 Jun 2017 07:13 PM PDT Israeli airstrikes hit a series of targets in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip overnight, officials said, hours after a rocket from the Palestinian enclave landed in the Jewish state. Strikes were recorded in at least three locations in Gaza, Palestinian security sources and eyewitnesses said, with Hamas bases struck near the southern city of Rafah and Gaza City, as well as open land southeast of Gaza City. The Palestinian health ministry said there were no immediate reports of injuries, but an AFP photographer in Gaza saw at least one man bleeding being taken for treatment from a house near the base. |
New video shows off every angle of the rumored iPhone 8 design Posted: 28 Jun 2017 01:50 PM PDT We've spent a majority of 2017 poring over dozens and dozens of iPhone 8 leaks. Some have looked surprisingly legitimate while others have been blatant fakes, but something interesting has happened over the past several weeks -- a unified vision of the iPhone 8 has begun to take shape. Unsurprisingly, not all of the leaks line up with one another, but enough do that we've been able to form a relatively complete picture in our heads of what the flagship device will look like. This week, Steve Hemmerstoffer teamed up with Tiger Mobiles to bring that vision to life.
What you're about to watch is a hands-on video with the "iPhone 8" -- or at least what we expect the iPhone 8 to look like based on all of the recent leaks and rumors. As the creators of the model explain in the video description, the phone you see below "is manufactured via CNC process. It is based upon 3D CAD sourced directly from the factory in charge of building the new iPhone." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pW1gx086ZxU The rumored design and all of the supposed features of the iPhone 8 are represented on the model in the video, from the vertical dual camera setup to the bezel-less display to the weird camera and sensor arrangement of the front of the phone. The power button has also grown by at least a few millimeters, but the volume buttons and the Ring/Silent side switch appear to be mostly unchanged. There's really nothing new here, but providing the leaked dimensions and specifications that keep popping up are correct, this could be our closest look at the iPhone 8 until Tim Cook brings it out on stage later this year. Or until someone accidentally leaves a unit in an airplane. |
Trump resorts have a fake Time cover on the walls, featuring guess who? Posted: 27 Jun 2017 01:23 PM PDT President Trump, sworn enemy of fake news, is also a purveyor of it: the Washington Post reports at least four of his golf resorts have phony Time magazine covers featuring the commander in chief. "Donald Trump: 'The Apprentice' is a television smash!" the cover reads, adding an emphatic "Trump is hitting on all fronts … even TV!" across the top. The cover is dated March 1, 2009, the first day of the second season of "The Celebrity Apprentice," the spinoff Trump hosted before he became president. |

German audience cheers as US commerce secretary speech is cut off Posted: 28 Jun 2017 09:07 AM PDT Wilbur Ross was addressing the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) political party conference in Berlin via video when his feed abruptly ended after 20 minutes due to time constraints. The crowd laughed and cheered at the organiser's decision to cut him off as they waited for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, sitting on stage in front of the video screen, to speak. "[He] had promised us a 10-minute statement," said Werner Bahlsen of the CDU, adding that Mr Ross spoke "a bit slowly," according to Bloomberg. |

The Queen is getting a massive pay rise and Twitter isn't impressed Posted: 27 Jun 2017 02:39 AM PDT At 91, the Queen might be well beyond her pension age, but that hasn't stopped her from getting a massive pay rise. SEE ALSO: Baby survives Grenfell, or not: Facebook's fake news problem continues apace A record-breaking performance by the Crown Estate, which owns residential properties, commercial offices, businesses, and land across Britain, means the Queen will get an 8% increase in income from public funds. The Sovereign Grant, which funds the monarch's household, official travel, and upkeep of palaces, will increase from £76 million ($97 million) in 2017-18 to £82.2 million ($104.9 million) next April. Not bad, huh? It's a £6 million pay rise. Now, before the French revolutionary in you starts ranting about royal privilege and taxpayers' money, it has to be reiterated that the Queen's funding is based on the profits of the Crown Estate, whose profits rose by £24 million to reach a new high of £328.8 million. Sir Alan Reid, whose title is "Keeper of the Privy Purse," defended the Queen, claiming she represents "excellent value for money." "When you look at these accounts, the bottom line is the Sovereign Grant last year equated to 65p per person, per annum, in the United Kingdom. That's the price of a first class stamp," he said. Also, Queen's pay rise will take place as refurbishment is taking place at Buckingham Palace, costing £369 million. However, people on Twitter weren't happy, to say the least, about the new funding, linking it to the Grenfell Tower fire: Glad we can find more taxpayer money to fix up Buckingham Palace while hundreds of tower blocks are dangerous.
