Texas bomber's roommates released by police after questioning Posted: 22 Mar 2018 03:46 PM PDT By Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Two roommates of the 23-year-old man behind this month's deadly bombing spree that unnerved Austin have been questioned and released from custody, police in the Texas capital said on Thursday. The move came as law enforcement officials searched for what motivated Mark Conditt, an unemployed man from the Austin suburb of Pflugerville, to commit the attacks that killed two people. Police say Conditt confessed to a three-week string of bombings in a 25-minute video made on his cellphone hours before he blew himself up, as law enforcement closed in on him Wednesday. |

Syrian Kurdish leader condemns Russia for Turkey 'green light' in Afrin Posted: 22 Mar 2018 11:34 AM PDT A prominent Syrian Kurdish leader on Thursday criticised Russia for giving a "green light" to Turkey to carry out an offensive in Syria's Afrin region, saying it wouldn't have happened without Moscow's approval. Turkish troops and allied Syrian forces seized control of the northwestern city of Afrin from the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia on Sunday. In an interview with AFP during a visit to Stockholm, Saleh Muslim, the former co-chair of the main Syrian Kurdish political movement, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) said Turkey wouldn't have succeeded without Russian backing. |

More than 4,000 Filipinos have been killed by police during President Rodrigo Duterte's controversial 20-month-old war on drugs, and thousands more by unidentified armed men. Most killings have been in rundown areas of Metro Manila and the nearby provinces of Bulacan and Cavite. |

Pacific plastic dump far larger than feared: study Posted: 22 Mar 2018 10:06 AM PDT The vast dump of plastic waste swirling in the Pacific ocean is now bigger than France, Germany and Spain combined -- far larger than previously feared -- and is growing rapidly, a study published Thursday warned. Researchers based in the Netherlands used a fleet of boats and aircraft to scan the immense accumulation of bottles, containers, fishing nets and microparticles known as the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" (GPGP) and found an astonishing build-up of plastic waste. "We found about 80,000 tonnes of buoyant plastic currently in the GPGP," Laurent Lebreton, lead author of the study published in the journal Scientific Reports, told AFP. |

Global energy demand rose by 2.1 percent last year to 14,050 million tonnes of oil equivalent, more than twice the previous year's rate, boosted by strong economic growth, according to preliminary estimates from the IEA. Energy demand rose by 0.9 percent in 2016 and 0.9 percent on average over the previous five years. |

Pilot captures heartstopping moment when his plane's engine fails mid-air Posted: 21 Mar 2018 09:45 PM PDT Of all of the things that could happen in the air, having your plane's engine shut off is the most frightening. In footage shot last May but surfaced recently, pilot Chad Barber was out practicing stunts when he lost fuel to his engine 2,500 feet above Pompano Beach in Florida. This caused his plane to start falling, all of which was recorded on video. Barber told WSVN 7 that there was a flop tube inside the fuel tank "that moves freely," and that it didn't pick up fuel in enough time to keep the engine running. "Survival was the first thing. I focused on surviving ... I did a little quick prayer in the 45 seconds that it had all happened," he told the news outlet. Fortunately, Barber was able to start up his engine mere moments before the plane reached the ground. Close call. |

One of chief suspect Anas Abu Koussa's alleged accomplices in last week's attack was also killed in the raid, according to Hamas. The raid came after Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip, launched a manhunt to search for the perpetrators of a roadside bomb that left prime minister Rami Hamdallah unhurt on March 13. |

The military released previously classified cockpit footage, photographs and intelligence documents about its Sept. 6, 2007, air strike on the Al-Kubar facility near Deir al-Zor in eastern Syria. It said the reactor was being constructed with help from North Korea and had been months away from activation. |

Smoking while walking? Not in New York if new bill is passed Posted: 21 Mar 2018 07:54 AM PDT 'In a perfect world, every smoker would have the self-awareness to realize smoking while walking subjects everyone behind you to the fumes,' said councilman Peter Koo. Smoking while walking would be banned in New York City if a new bill is passed into law. Councilman Peter Koo is introducing the legislation on Wednesday, in what he says is an attempt to keep secondhand smoke away from pedestrians. |
