Hawaii volcano eruption: Is this the beginning - or the end?Lava flows and a series of earthquakes, have now been followed by large clouds of toxic fumes and tiny glass-like particles known as "laze", from Hawaii's erupting volcano, Kilauea. Lava has also continued to gush out of large cracks in the ground in residential neighbourhoods, while two explosive eruptions unleashed clouds of ash from the volcano's summit. Nottingham Cottage: The Kensington home where Meghan and Harry live as a married couple

Posted: 21 May 2018 11:30 AM PDT

Nottingham Cottage: The Kensington home where Meghan and Harry live as a married coupleFollowing their royal wedding, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, will continue to live at Nottingham Cottage, a snug, two-bedroomed property in the grounds of Kensington Palace. The cottage was previously occupied by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who used it as their London base for around two-and-a-half years. How big is the cottage? Just a stone's throw from Kensington Palace, Prince Harry's childhood home, the cosy property, known by royal insiders as "Nott Cott," boasts two bedrooms, two reception rooms, a bathroom and a small garden. An aerial view of Kensington Palace, London Credit: Andrew Parsons/PA Wire King William III and Queen Mary II bought 'Nottingham House' from secretary of state Daniel Finch, the Earl of Nottingham, for £20,000 in 1689. It was subsequently remodelled into the palace by Christopher Wren, the architect who designed St Paul's Cathedral. The ceilings are said to be so low, the Duke of Cambridge had to "stoop" to avoid banging his head on them. An ideal starter home for newlyweds, the property also provides fantastic access to the trendy shops, boutiques and spas on Kensington High Street with which Ms Markle, 36, is already familiar. Ms Markle was familiar with the private, self-contained cottage before she moved in, having stayed with Prince Harry, 33, when she flew over from Toronto to visit him. Everything you need to know about visiting Kensington Palace Photographs of her former home in Toronto suggest that she favours a minimalistic, monochrome colour scheme with plenty of soft furnishings, coffee table books and floral arrangements. The American actress decorated it to "look like a California bungalow", and you can see how it looked while she lived in it on pictures she posted to Instagram. She wrote on her blog The Tig that the sunny decor helped her to stave off "seven Canadian winters."  She has probably put her own mark on what had been, for four years, a bachelor pad. The Duchess of Cambridge is said to have redecorated it to her own taste when she first moved in. Royal wedding day pictures: Best photos from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's ceremony and reception Who else has lived there? Nottingham Cottage is one of the smallest properties within the grounds of Kensington Palace and was formerly the home of the Duke of Edinburgh's private secretary, Brigadier Sir Miles Hunt-Davis, and his wife Gay. Princess Diana's sister Lady Jane Fellowes and her husband Sir Robert Fellowes also lived there. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge lived there when in London, from July 2011, moving in permanently when they left Anglesey. Royal wedding | Read more It is where they took Prince George following his birth in July 2013 and spent their first few months as a family-of three before moving out that autumn to Apartment 1A, formerly the residence of Princess Margaret, in October that year. Prince Harry moved in shortly afterwards and has lived there ever since. The first thing he reportedly did when was install a hammock in the yard. When the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge married, they were given Anmer Hall, a 10-bedroom Grade II-listed mansion on the Sandringham estate by the Queen. It's likely a similar offer will be made to Prince Harry and Ms Markle.  Meghan Markle's former home in Toronto Credit: AKGS It is not known whether he and Ms Markle employ their own staff. The Cambridges employed Italian housekeeper, Antonella Fresolone, who worked as a housemaid for the Queen for 13 years, to run their home when at Nottingham Cottage as well as in Anglesey. When Ms Markle moved to the UK, she brought her beloved beagle Guy with her. Bogart, a labrador-shepherd cross, was left behind with friends in Toronto after he was considered unfit to fly.

First baby in 12 years for remote Brazilian island where births are banned

First baby in 12 years for remote Brazilian island where births are bannedA remote Brazilian island welcomed its first baby in 12 years after a local woman broke the rule against giving birth there. The baby girl born on the Atlantic outpost of Fernando de Noronha on Saturday came as a surprise to everyone - including the parents. "The mother, who does not want to be identified, went into labor at home," the island's administration said in a statement carried by O Globo newspaper. "The family says it wasn't aware of the pregnancy." Tiny Fernando de Noronha - an archipelago famous for its wildlife preserve and with a population of just over 3,000 - doesn't authorize births because there's no maternity ward, O Globo reported. Expectant mothers are told to travel to the mainland, where the nearest big city is Natal, 227 miles (365 km) across the ocean. The unidentified mother in Saturday's birth has another child who was born on the mainland, but told O Globo that this time she "didn't feel anything" during her pregnancy. "On Friday night I had pains and when I went to the bathroom I saw something coming down between my legs. That's when the child's father came and picked it up. "It was a baby, a girl. I was dumbstruck."

Trump attacks ex-CIA chief over 'hit job' Russia probePresident Donald Trump attacked the probe into possible collusion between his campaign and Russia as a "political hit job" on Monday, as a part of a mounting White House effort to paint the probe as politically motivated. In the latest salvo from Trump's administration and his Republican Party, the president assailed former CIA chief John Brennan, a strident critic, as having initiated the investigation. A day earlier, Trump demanded the Justice Department investigate the FBI for allegedly planting an informant in his campaign, and his lawyer pressed Special Counsel Robert Mueller to speed up the probe to avoid it affecting November's mid-term elections.

U.S. top court takes up challenge to Virginia uranium mining ban

U.S. top court takes up challenge to Virginia uranium mining banBy Andrew Chung WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday agreed to decide whether states have the right to ban uranium mining for public health reasons in a dispute over a moratorium Virginia put in place on the radioactive metal in 1982. The court will hear a bid by a Virginia Energy Resources Inc subsidiary and other owners of the largest U.S. uranium deposit to revive a lawsuit thrown out by a lower court that sought to invalidate Virginia's ban because it conflicted with a federal law that regulates nuclear power generation. Uranium, a main source of fuel for nuclear power plants and material in nuclear warheads, remains a strategic resource for electricity and national defense.

Mike Pompeo threatens 'strongest sanctions in history' and vows to 'crush' Iranian proxies

Posted: 21 May 2018 07:01 AM PDT

Mike Pompeo threatens 'strongest sanctions in history' and vows to 'crush' Iranian proxiesMike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, threatened Iran with the "strongest sanctions in history" and vowed to "crush" the regime's proxies around the world. Mr Pompeo also called for a new nuclear treaty with Iran to replace the Obama-era deal that Donald Trump withdrew from earlier this month. But the top US diplomat issued a list of  12 requirements for such a deal, many of which Iran would be unlikely to agree to. He said the US would apply "unprecedented financial pressure" on Iran and send teams of specialists to allies around the world to explain US policy. Mr Pompeo said if Iran makes "major changes" the US was willing to lift all sanctions. Iran deal was a 'loser' Delivering his first major foreign policy speech since taking the job, Mr Pompeo doubled down on the United States' decision to quit the Iran nuclear deal earlier this month.  He framed the 2015 deal as allowing Iran to increase its malign influence across the Middle East on the back of funding from renewed trade with the West. Mr Pompeo accused the Iranian regime of "playing with house money that has become blood money". And he told the regime: "Understand your current activities will be met with steely resolve". He added: "The Obama administration made a bet.  That bet was a loser with massive repercussions. Mike Pompeo speaking in Washington Credit: Reuters "The bet was a bad one for the US, for Europe, and for the world. Iran's leaders saw it as a starting gun for the march across the Middle East." He added: "We will track down Iranian operatives and their proxies around the world and we will crush them." America 'open' to a new deal Mr Pompeo called for a new treaty with Iran, ratified by Congress, that ends enrichment and gives inspectors access . He said Iran must "stop enrichment" of uranium, which was allowed within strict limitations under the 2015 deal. Iran must also allow nuclear inspectors "unqualified access to all sites throughout the country". The Iranians must also declare all previous efforts to build a nuclear weapon, he said. Mr Pompeo also demanded that Iran must end support for Shiite Houthi rebels in Yemen, withdraw all forces from Syria, halt support for Hezbollah and stop threatening Israel. It must also release all US citizens missing in Iran or being held on "spurious charges". Mike Pompeo Iran demands Mr Pompeo said if Iran made "major changes" the US would be willing to lift all sanctions, restoring full diplomatic and commercial ties. The US. would even support the modernisation of Iran's economy and help it reintegrate into the global financial system, he said. He added: "A treaty would be our preferred way to go."   Pompeo reaches out to European allies Mr Pompeo reached out to European and Middle Eastern  allies to help ramp up economic pressure on Iran. He said: "We want the support of our most important allies," adding that he welcomed backing from any other nation "sick and tired" of Iran. He said the plan "may seem unrealsistic" but what the US was pursuing was the global consensus befoe the 2015 Iran deal. "Our ears are open to what may be possible," he said, adding that progress with North Korea showed what could be achieved.   Other signatories of the 2015 Ian deal - Britain, France, Germany, the European Union, China, Russia and Iran - have said they will try to keep the agreement alive.  Mr Pompeo said: "I know our allies in Europe may try to keep the old nuclear deal going with Tehran. That is certainly their decision. They know where wee stand." The future of the 2015 deal remains in the balance, with Iran saying it will only keep to the agreement if the economic benefits gained from it remain in placed.  American allies have been clamouring for the Trump administration to explain its 'Plan B' approach to Iran after unilaterally quitting the deal.  US 'fully prepared' to respond if Iran resumes nuclear programme Mr Pompeo said the US was ready if Iran chose to resume its nuclear programme. He said: "Our demands on Iran are not unreasonable - give up your programme. "Should they choose to go back, should they begin to enrich, we are fully prepared to respond to that as well. I hope they will make a different decision, choose a different path." He did not say what the US response would be. European businesses would have to cut ties with Iran Much of the effectiveness of the Trump administration's reimposition of sanctions depends on European businesses cutting economic ties with Iran.   Firms in the EU have taken much more advantage of the 2015 waiving of sanctions to sign contracts increasing business in Iran than those in America.  The EU exported over €10.8 billion (£9.4 billion) worth of goods to Iran in 2017, half of which was made up by machinery and transport. That is up from €6.5 billion (£5.7 billion) in 2015.  Senior Trump administration officials have threatened to impose 'secondary sanctions' on European businesses if they refuse to cancel their contracts. In return the EU has moved to reimpose a "blocking statue" originally meant to circumvent a the US embargo against Cuba in the 1990s that would protect European businesses.

SEE ALSO: Bishop Michael Curry brought passion and fire to the Royal Wedding Google trends released some stats pertaining to people's Google searches about the royal wedding and it's a snapshot into what people were really intersted in. Sort of like a less functional hat. Technically the dress-code for the wedding stipulated that hats be worn rather than fascinators, but some people were just born to be rebels. Google trends also revealed that although Harry and Meghan have become the most searched royals since their engagement, the Google crown still belongs to William and Kate, who got married in 2011.
