House judiciary's top Republican urges hearings into Russian election meddling Posted: 04 Jun 2019 10:06 AM PDT The top Republican on the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday called for hearings into interference by Russia and others in the 2016 election and beyond, on the heels of a statement https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia-text/u-s-special-counsel-muellers-statement-on-russia-probe-idUSKCN1SZ23Q by former U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller and ahead of presidential elections next year. The request comes as the judiciary panel continues to seek documents and evidence stemming from the report written by Mueller, who headed investigations into Russian interference in the U.S. election, whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow and if President Donald Trump had obstructed justice. |

Walmart’s CEO Calls on Congress to Boost Minimum Wage Posted: 05 Jun 2019 10:50 AM PDT Calling the current $7.25 minimum wage "too low," Walmart Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon said Wednesday it's "time for Congress to put a thoughtful plan in place" to boost it. Walmart has raised its starting wage several times in recent years to the current $11 an hour, but that's still below rivals like Target Corp. and Costco Wholesale Corp. |
The NSA is urging Windows users to update their computers ASAP Posted: 05 Jun 2019 03:04 PM PDT If you're a Windows user who has yet to update your operating system after the discovery of the Bluekeep vulnerability a few weeks ago, then maybe a warning from the NSA will be enough to spur you on.Bluekeep is a vulnerability that's been compared to the devastating 2007 malware WannaCry that wreaked havoc on computer systems around the world, resulting in millions of dollars' worth of damage. There's concern that systems running older versions of Windows like Windows 7 are especially vulnerable to Bluekeep. The NSA's advisory, which you can read in full here, notes that Bluekeep is a vulnerability in the remote desktop feature on legacy versions of Windows. "The National Security Agency is urging Microsoft Windows administrators and users to ensure they are using a patched and updated system in the face of growing threats," the advisory reads.Microsoft, it continues, has warned that the Bluekeep flaw "is potentially 'wormable,' meaning it could spread without user interaction across the internet. We have seen devastating computer worms inflict damage on unpatched systems with wide-ranging impact, and are seeking to motivate increased protections against this flaw."The advisory notes that these are the affected versions of Windows: * Windows XP * Windows Server 2003 * Windows Vista * Windows Server 2008 * Windows 7 * Windows Server 2008 R2Microsoft has issued a patch, but millions of machines are reportedly still vulnerable. The NSA says it's concerned that hackers will use this vulnerability in ransomware and exploit kits that contain other known exploits, increasing their capabilities against other unprotected systems. The Bluekeep vulnerability could also be used to conduct denial of service attacks, according to the agency."NSA urges everyone to invest the time and resources to know your network and run supported operating systems with the latest patches," the advisory continues, also noting that Windows 10 systems are protected against the flaw and that it only affects the named older versions of Windows. "This is critical not just for NSA's protection of National Security Systems but for all networks." |
San Francisco to force treatment on mentally ill drug users Posted: 04 Jun 2019 06:06 PM PDT San Francisco officials decided Tuesday to force some people with serious mental illness and drug addiction into treatment, even if it goes against the spirit of a city known for its fierce protection of civil rights. Several members of the Board of Supervisors voiced deep concerns Tuesday about the possibility of taking away a person's civil liberties, but the proposal for a pilot program passed 10-1. Mayor London Breed and other supporters say the move — known as conservatorship — is necessary to help people who are often homeless, addicted to drugs and have a mental illness, making them a danger to themselves. |
EXCLUSIVE-GM CEO defends plan to sell Ohio plant to startup Posted: 05 Jun 2019 10:56 AM PDT General Motors Chief Executive Mary Barra on Wednesday defended the automaker's plan to sell an assembly plant in Ohio, arguing the plan to sell the plant to an electric vehicle start-up was thoroughly vetted and had a chance of success. Barra told Reuters in a brief interview Wednesday after a series of meetings on Capitol Hill that the company did not plan to add a new vehicle to its Lordstown, Ohio, assembly plant that ended production in March because it has additional unused U.S. capacity. Last month, GM announced it was in talks to sell the plant to EV startup Workhorse Group Inc and an affiliated, newly formed entity. |
Trump reports progress, but not enough, in tariff talks with Mexico Posted: 05 Jun 2019 04:48 PM PDT President Donald Trump said some progress -- but not enough -- was made Wednesday in talks with Mexico on averting the tariffs he threatens to impose unless the southern neighbor stems the flow of undocumented migrants into the US. Ahead of the high-stakes negotiations Wednesday, the Trump administration laid out tough demands for Mexico City to crack down on hundreds of thousands of Central American migrants traversing the country to the US Mexican border in recent months. |

U.S. to Ensure Rare-Earth Supply Amid Trade War With China Posted: 04 Jun 2019 02:47 PM PDT The U.S. will take steps to ensure it doesn't get cut off from the supply of rare earths used in everything from the production of computer screens to missile systems and mobile phones, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said. The Commerce Department on Tuesday released a report requested by President Donald Trump in December 2017, when he asked officials to look into U.S. access to so-called rare earths, a group of 17 elements including lanthanum and terbium. "These critical minerals are often overlooked but modern life without them would be impossible," Ross said in a statement. |

The House approved a resolution that urged China to provide a "full, transparent and independent accounting" of the Tiananmen crackdown, in which hundreds if not more than 1,000 pro-democracy protesters were killed on June 4, 1989 as the communist rulers sent in tanks and troops. It also urged China to "cease the censoring of information and discussion about the Tiananmen Square massacre" including at Confucius Institutes, the centers for Chinese studies that Beijing has supported at universities around the world. |

This is the biggest Galaxy Note 10 leak so far Posted: 04 Jun 2019 06:26 AM PDT With the Galaxy Note 10 set to launch in just 2 months, we've seen plenty of leaks over the past few weeks. Truth be told, however, there hasn't been much news that has surprised us. Given Samsung's history with Galaxy Note phones, we know that the Galaxy Note 10 will basically be a Galaxy S10 Plus with a slightly different design and S Pen stylus support. It'll be powered by the same Snapdragon 855 and Exynos 9825 processors, it'll have the same triple-lens rear camera system, and it'll sport the same Dynamic AMOLED screen in a slightly different size with slightly better tuning. In fact, the only surprises so far have probably been the revelations that there will be multiple versions of the Note 10 for the first time in the history of the Galaxy Note series and the fact that the phones will support lightning-fast 45W fast charging. While it might not be the most surprising new smartphone in the world, there are still tons of Samsung fans out there who can't wait to get their hands on the company's next-generation Note phone. The Galaxy Note 10 won't make its official debut until sometime in early August, but a new leak confirms that there will be an ultra high-end version of the phone, and it even tells us exactly how powerful the new Note will be.We already know that Samsung plans to launch a new entry-level version of the Galaxy Note 10 this year. Flagship phones have gotten so ridiculously expensive that market leaders like Apple and Samsung decided to offer stripped-down versions that cost hundreds less than the high-end models. Apple's iPhone XR started the trend in 2018, and this year's Galaxy S10e must be doing well too, because Samsung is following it with a similar Note 10 model. We're not sure if it'll be called the "Galaxy Note 10e," but we are certain that it'll be far more affordable than the main version of the Note 10. But there's another Note 10 model in the works as well, and it'll be even more expensive than the standard Galaxy Note 10.Rumors of the Galaxy Note 10 5G's existence have popped up repeatedly over the past few weeks, and now the phone's upcoming release is all but confirmed. Two different versions of the Galaxy Note 10 5G were spotted Tuesday morning by a blog called Nashville Chatter on the well-known benchmark test site Geekbench.SM-N970 and SM-N975 are reportedly the model numbers reserved for Samsung's regular Galaxy Note 10 with either a Snapdragon or an Exynos processor, while SM-N971 and SM-N976 were rumored to be another version of that model with 5G support. Those rumors are now confirmed because an SM-N976V headed for Verizon and an SM-N976B headed for Telstra in Australia were just spotted on Geekbench. Here are screenshots of their impressive scores:The details on the Geekbench website confirm that the SM-N976V will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, while the SM-N976B sports an Exynos 9825. As is the case with Samsung's Galaxy S10 phones, the Snapdragon version that will be sold in the United States and China appears to be a bit more powerful than the Exynos model.Samsung's Galaxy Note 10 5G is expected to be unveiled alongside the Galaxy Note 10 and "Galaxy Note 10e" in early August, and the phones should go on sale around the middle of the month. |

North Korea’s ‘Executed’ Nuclear Envoy Is Alive, CNN Says Posted: 04 Jun 2019 01:45 AM PDT Kim Hyok Chol, who led working-level negotiations for the February summit in Hanoi between President Donald Trump and leader Kim Jong Un, is being investigated for his role in the failure to reach a deal, CNN reported Tuesday. South Korean Unification Minister Kim Yeon Chul told foreign correspondents at a briefing he has nothing to share about the reported purge in North Korea. The Chosun Ilbo, a conservative South Korean daily, sparked global intrigue over the fate of Kim Hyok Chol when it reported Friday he had been executed by firing squad after being charged with espionage as part of an internal purge. |
Pompeo statement on Tiananmen met with sharp China response Posted: 03 Jun 2019 11:43 PM PDT China responded pointedly to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's comments on the 30th anniversary of the Chinese army's bloody suppression of student-led pro-democracy protests centered on Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The dueling statements underscore the vast divide in perceptions of the events of three decades ago, which Beijing considers a taboo subject that the West only raises in order to embarrass and de-legitimize China as part of a strategy to contain its development. |
REFILE-Natural gas flaring hits record high in Q1 in U.S. Permian Basin Posted: 04 Jun 2019 08:31 AM PDT Natural gas flaring and venting in the top U.S. oil field reached an all-time high in the first quarter of the year due to the lack of pipelines, at a time of increased focus on environmental concerns about methane emissions. Producers burned or vented 661 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) in the Permian Basin of West Texas and eastern New Mexico, the field that has driven the U.S. to record oil production, according to a new report from Rystad Energy. "It's very persistent issue with infrastructure," said Artem Abramov, head of shale research at Rystad. |
All the best new iOS 13 features Apple didn’t reveal at WWDC Posted: 04 Jun 2019 05:17 AM PDT Apple executives took the stage in San Jose, California on Monday morning and gave the world its first look at the company's next-generation software platforms. MacOS 10.15 Catalina is packed full of nifty new features, tvOS 13 gets a great new home screen, and watchOS 6 has all sorts of new features as well as new watch faces. You can read a full recap of all the biggest announcements right here, but it goes without saying that the star of the show during Apple's WWDC 2019 keynote was iOS 13. After last year's iOS 12 update focused almost exclusively on fixing bugs and improving performance, the company's new iOS 13 software shifts gears back to adding new features -- and needless to say, there are far too many new features in iOS 13 for Apple to have covered them all during its keynote presentation. We've already detailed the 15 best new iOS 13 features coming to your iPhone and iPad later this year, and it's a fantastic list. Highlights include the new system-wide Dark Mode users have been clamoring for, swipe typing support on the Apple keyboard, a new secure "Sign in with Apple" feature, and new call filtering capabilities that could eliminate spam calls almost entirely. But what about all the smaller iOS 13 features that Apple didn't have time to cover on stage at WWDC 2019?At the end of the iOS 13 section of Apple's WWDC keynote on Monday, senior vice president of software Craig Federighi noted that there were far too many new iOS 13 features to cover them all. As he said that, a slide flashed on the screen behind him and listed nearly 70 additional new iOS 13 features for the iPhone and iPad that hadn't been discussed on stage. Apple news blog 9to5Mac managed to take a screen captured of the slide in question, and it wrote out all the new iOS 13 features shown on that list. Here's the full rundown:iOS 13 system: * Optimized battery charging * Single sign-on extension * Option to download large apps over cellular * Video downloads optimized for congestion in India * Wi-Fi selection in Control center * Enhanced QR code scanning * Reading goals in Apple Books * Low Data ModeAudio: * Dolby Atmos playback * Bluetooth wireless splitterFaceTime, Phone, and Messages: * Improved search in Messages * Silence unknown callers * FaceTime on Dual SIM * iMessage on dual SIMPhotos: * Location controls for Shared Photos * Search enhancements in PhotosReminders & Notes: * Folder Management in Notes * Customize appearance of Reminders lists * View only collaboration in Notes * More powerful search in Notes * New Checklist Option in NotesMDM & Business: * Business Chat Suggestions * Data separation for BYOD * Managed Apple IDS for business * Modern authentication for device enrolmentCalendar & Mail & Contacts: * Add attachments to events in Calendar * New relationship labels in Contacts * Block sender in Mail * Mute thread in MailKeyboard & Language: * Separate Emoji and Globe Keys * Enhanced language setup * Thai-English bilingual dictionary * Hindi and English bilingual keyboard * Typing predictions for Hindi * Typing predictions for Dutch * Adjustable Chinese handwriting keyboard height * Typing predictions for Vietnamese * Typing predictions for Swedish * Language selection per app * Typing predictions for Cantonese * Typing predictions for Arabic * Vietnamese English bilingual dictionary * Refreshed Home accessory controls * Weak password warnings * Simultaneous phone calls on Dual SIM * Keyboard support for all 22 official Indian languages * New Indian language system fonts * Apple News+ in UK and AustraliaSiri: * Indian English Siri voices * Siri Suggestions in Apple Podcasts * Siri Event Suggestions from Third-party apps * Siri Shortcuts in Home automations * Conversational Siri shortcutsCarPlay & Maps: * Second video stream support in CarPlay * CarPlay irregular screen size support * Hey Siri support in CarPlay * CarPlay adjustable screen size support * Do Not Disturb While Driving in CarPlay * Independent CarPlay app views * Light mode in CarPlay * Improved Report a problem in Maps * Maps Place Card enhancementsSafari: * Updated Safari Start Page * Siri suggestions in Safari * Enhanced anti-fingerprinting protections in SafariAs you can see, there are definitely some gems that Apple didn't get to during the WWDC keynote. "Optimized battery charging" and "Low Data Mode" both sound quite promising, and several of our readers likely fainted when they got to "Improved search in Messages" on the list. The search function in Apple's Messages apps in iOS and in macOS has always been horrible, so we can't wait to see if Apple got its act together in iOS 13. Also worth noting, you won't find mention of the new volume HUD on the list above, but Apple FINALLY fixed the little pop up that appears when you adjust the volume in iOS 13. That's right, it doesn't block the entire middle of the screen anymore! Now that iOS 13 beta 1 is out (here's how to install it on your iPhone) and people are testing on their iPhones, plenty more news about new unannounced iOS 13 features will trickle out over the coming days. |
Federal Judge Blocks House Dems’ Challenge to Trump’s Border Wall Posted: 04 Jun 2019 05:12 AM PDT A federal judge in Washington, D.C. ruled Monday against House Democrats in their bid to block President Trump from reallocating Defense Department funds for the construction of his long-promised border wall.U.S. district judge Trevor McFadden found that Congress should rely on a legislative approach to stop the president from funding the construction of his border wall through a national emergency declaration, rather than challenging the administration in court."Congress has several political arrows in its quiver to counter perceived threats to its sphere of power," McFadden wrote in the decision. "These tools show that this lawsuit is not a last resort for the House. And this fact is also exemplified by the many other cases across the country challenging the administration's planned construction of the border wall."Trump declared a national emergency in February in order to unilaterally appropriate $2.5 billion from the Defense Department's anti-drug trafficking funds and $3.6 billion from its construction budget for the construction of a border wall.Pelosi and fellow House Democrats argued in their suit that the allocation of those funds harmed Congress's institutional authority by depriving it of the power of the purse granted to it under the Administrative Procedures Act.The Department of Justice celebrated the decision on Monday as a defense of the administration's constitutional prerogatives."The court rightly ruled that the House of Representatives cannot ask the judiciary to take its side in political disputes and cannot use federal courts to accomplish through litigation what it cannot achieve using the tools the Constitution gives to Congress," a DOJ spokesman said. "The Department looks forward to continuing to defend the administration's lawful actions to address the crisis at the southern border."While the ruling is a positive development for the administration, it does not guarantee the wall's construction. It comes roughly one month after a federal judge in California temporarily blocked the administration from reallocating certain Pentagon funds for the wall's construction, further impeding efforts to secure the $8.5 billion the president claims is necessary to build a satisfactory wall. |

The U.S. Navy's Latest Aircraft Carrier Won't Have F-35s? Posted: 04 Jun 2019 12:38 AM PDT The U.S. Navy's newest aircraft carrier won't be able to deploy with the service's newest warplane. At least not at first. And Congress is unhappy about that, according to Ben Werner at USNI News. The House Armed Services seapower and projection forces subcommittee included in its version of the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act a ban on the Navy taking delivery of the Ford-class carrier John F. Kennedy unless the carrier can deploy with F-35C Lighting II stealth fighter, Ben Werner reported for USNI News. The Navy decided to omit the gear for the F-35 in order to keep Kennedy under the $11-billion cost cap that Congress has imposed on the ship's construction. The sailing branch plans to christen Kennedy in late 2019 and add F-35-compatibility at a later date. The Navy in February 2019 declared its first F-35C squadron to be combat-ready."Cost caps imposed by Congress on the Ford-class program to keep the price of these ships from escalating have accomplished the opposite effect," a committee staff member told Werner, "with the Navy accepting delivery of unfinished carriers and intending to pay more money later on to add critical capabilities in the future.".The jet-compatibility problem is only the latest to afflict the Ford program. |
