Nigeria's Buhari orders corruption probe over humanitarian funds Posted: 19 Apr 2017 12:21 PM PDT Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday ordered an investigation into corruption allegations against a senior civil servant related to the use of funds intended for handling a humanitarian crisis in the northeast of the country. The director general of the National Intelligence Agency was also ordered to be suspended after the discovery of more than $43 million in an apartment complex in Lagos in what the presidency described as a "related development". Buhari suspended David Babachir Lawal, secretary to the Nigerian government, and ordered a probe into contracts awarded under the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE), his spokesman said in a statement. |

Arkansas court allows execution drug hours ahead of lethal injection Posted: 20 Apr 2017 04:16 PM PDT By Steve Barnes LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Reuters) - The top Arkansas court allowed the state on Thursday to use a drug that is part of its chemical mix for lethal injections, hours before the state planned its first execution in 12 years. The decision from the Arkansas Supreme Court came about three hours before the state planned to execute convicted murderer Ledell Lee at 7 p.m. local time (0000 GMT) at its Cummins Unit in Grady, which houses the state's death chamber. The southeastern state had planned to execute eight inmates in 11 days, the most of any state in as short a period since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976. |

5 takeaways from Jon Ossoff’s showing in the Georgia special election Posted: 19 Apr 2017 06:54 PM PDT To no one's real surprise, President Trump and Jon Ossoff came to different conclusions regarding the final results of Tuesday's special election in Georgia. On balance, however, Ossoff may have more to brag about than the president. 1. Jon Ossoff was never likely to win the Sixth District primary outright. |

Verizon profit, revenue miss Wall Street view as subscribers dash Posted: 20 Apr 2017 08:40 AM PDT Verizon Communications Inc on Thursday reported its first-ever quarterly loss of subscribers, even as it offered an unlimited data plan, raising questions on whether the No. 1 U.S. wireless carrier may need a larger acquisition than Yahoo to diversify its business. Verizon has been struggling to fend off smaller rivals T-Mobile US Inc and Sprint Corp in a maturing market for U.S. wireless service, and in February offered an unlimited data plan for the first time in more than five years. |

California's 'weed nuns' on a mission to heal with cannabis Posted: 20 Apr 2017 03:58 PM PDT By Omar Younis MERCED, Calif. (Reuters) - The Sisters of the Valley, California's self-ordained "weed nuns," are on a mission to heal and empower women with their cannabis products. Based near the town of Merced in the Central Valley, which produces over half of the fruit, vegetables and nuts grown in the United States, the Sisters of the Valley grow and harvest their own cannabis plants. The group says its Holy Trinity is the marijuana plant, specifically hemp, a strain of marijuana that has very low levels of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in the plant. |

Riot police fired tear gas to force back stone-throwing demonstrators as tens of thousands of people joined protest marches in Caracas and several other cities. The opposition has accused Maduro of letting state forces and gangs of armed thugs violently repress demonstrators as he resists opposition pressure for him to quit. |

U.S., Iran trade barbs over landmark 2015 nuclear deal Posted: 20 Apr 2017 02:55 PM PDT BEIRUT/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Iran and the United States traded barbs over the landmark 2015 nuclear deal on Thursday, with the U.S. leader accusing Tehran of not living up to the spirit of the accord and Iran's top diplomat urging Washington to fulfill its own commitments. The exchange came a day after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson sent a letter to Congress saying Iran was in compliance with the nuclear deal but raising questions about Tehran's role in sponsoring terrorism in the region. |

Some 1,500 Palestinian prisoners have joined the hunger strike that began Monday, according to Issa Qaraqe, head of detainees' affairs for the Palestinian Authority. Contacted by AFP, Israel's prison service declined to comment on the number. |

Approval for Duterte's drug war slips in Philippines Posted: 18 Apr 2017 11:12 PM PDT Satisfaction in the Philippines with President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs declined in the first quarter this year, a survey showed on Wednesday, with opinions split about police accounts that the drug suspects they killed had resisted arrest. Seventy-eight percent of 1,200 people surveyed by Social Weather Stations (SWS) said they were satisfied by the government's crackdown on illegal drugs, down from 85 percent in a similar poll in December last year. Almost 9,000 people, many small-time users and dealers, have been killed in the Philippines since Duterte took office on June 30. |

How to Choose a Solo 401(k) Provider Posted: 20 Apr 2017 06:43 AM PDT Creation of the individual 401(k) with the Bush-era tax cuts went practically unnoticed, and the financial services industry was slow to set up these retirement plans and still has not done much marketing. In fact, the solo 401(k) can be even better, because the single participant is in charge of choosing the investment options and can even get a tax deduction for additional contributions in his or her role as the employer. This year, a plan participant can put in $18,000 as employee ($24,000 if 50 or older), plus an employer's contribution of up to 25 percent of his compensation, with total contributions limited to $54,000 ($60,000 if 50 or older). |

Russia denies Reuters report think tank drew up plan to sway U.S. election Posted: 20 Apr 2017 07:11 AM PDT Russia dismissed as false on Thursday a Reuters report that said a government think tank controlled by President Vladimir Putin had developed a plan to swing the 2016 U.S. presidential election in Donald Trump's favor. Reuters reported on Wednesday that the Moscow-based Russian Institute for Strategic Studies (RISS) had provided the framework and rationale for what U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded was an intensive effort by Russia to interfere with the Nov. 8 election. The Reuters report cited three current and four former U.S. officials who had acquired two documents prepared by the institute. |
US urges UN to focus on 'chief culprit' Iran Posted: 20 Apr 2017 11:54 AM PDT The United States on Thursday urged the UN Security Council to make Iran's "incredibly destructive" activities its Middle East priority and devote less attention to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. US Ambassador Nikki Haley branded Iran the "chief culprit" of regional conflicts and vowed to work with Washington's partners to demand Iran comply with UN resolutions. |
iPhone 8 design leak hints at backside Touch ID, vertical dual cameras Posted: 19 Apr 2017 10:03 AM PDT If the Apple rumor mill is heating up, it must mean that a new piece of iPhone information has leaked, in this case the iPhone 8. And this one is a biggie. A new schematic drawing for what appears to be the iPhone 8 has appeared online and, based on the visuals, it looks like the rumors of a back-mounted Touch ID button may have been accurate. SEE ALSO: We finally have proof Apple is working on a self-driving car The image was posted by frequent (and reasonably trustworthy) mobile device info leaker Sonny Dickson on Wednesday morning. Covered with watermarks that indicate it may have been snagged from Chinese social network QQ, the black and white illustration shows us what is presumably the inside back panel of the upcoming smartphone. iPhone 8 looks to be taking a new direction pic.twitter.com/mG19bcDYiC — Sonny Dickson (@SonnyDickson) April 19, 2017 At this point, all we have is visual guesswork, but the design of the panel shows a space for the iPhone's rumored vertical dual lens camera, the Apple logo, and what is possibly a space for a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Or, and this is another longshot-but-totally-feasible-notion, maybe it's a wireless charging space. In recent days, other rumors have surfaced hinting that component supplier issues may force Apple to ditch rumored plans to include a fingerprint sensor on the front of the device, located under its glass screen. Of course, this new illustration, even from the good source, is confirmation of nothing regarding the iPhone 8. And with rumors of several different versions in the offing, all with significantly different design elements, we are officially fumbling around in the dark in terms of what physical features to expect. Nevertheless, this new image offers another tantalizing piece of the puzzle as anticipation mounts for Apple's 10th anniversary iPhone. Bangkok is often voted the world's best destination for street food in travel polls. "We would like the consumers, tourists or even the Thai patrons to be entitled to sanitary food, so far I don't think we have achieved that," Wallop Suwandee, chief adviser to Bangkok's governor, told Reuters. |

The State Department admits that Iran has so far maintained its side of the bargain it struck with world powers in 2015 to curtail its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. "The Trump administration has no intention of passing the buck to a future administration on Iran," Tillerson told reporters. |
