Posted: 28 Mar 2017 02:00 AM PDT WASHINGTON — Congressman Adam Schiff, increasingly the Democratic point man on the investigation into allegations of overly cozy ties between President Trump and Russia, is a soft-spoken former federal prosecutor and a critic of government surveillance who may be the only lawmaker ever to draw blood from comic Stephen Colbert — literally. Now Schiff is locked in a tense, headline-making standoff with the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Devin Nunes, over how to proceed with a multi-tiered investigation into Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 election, a probe that the White House sees as a dagger aimed at Trump's legitimacy even though Schiff hasn't drawn blood yet. |

Japan ruling party urges strike capability amid N. Korea threat Posted: 29 Mar 2017 07:37 AM PDT Japan's ruling party said Wednesday the government should consider developing the capability to strike enemy bases if the country is attacked, citing North Korea's missile and nuclear threats. North Korea conducted two nuclear tests last year and test-fired four ballistic missiles just this month, three of which landed off Japan's coast. "North Korea's provocative acts are reaching levels our country can simply no longer overlook," a Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) security panel said in a proposal to be submitted to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as early as Thursday. |
Did an astroid strike a Martian ocean and create a cataclysmic tsunami? Posted: 27 Mar 2017 06:01 PM PDT There's no shortage of theories about what Mars was like billions of years ago. The prevailing guess is that water was abundant, and there may have even been enough to form huge oceans. New research into an existing geographical feature on the red planet could provide new evidence of not only the existence of a massive body of water, but also an astroid impact that could have generated multiple devastating tsunamis.
Evidence that water existed on Mars is ample, and many researchers believe that telltale signs of tsunamis are also present. In an effort to explain how a tsunami might have been generated, scientists have been looking for the spot (or spots) on the Martian surface where an astroid or other celestial object could have come crashing down. One particularly interesting spot on the planet, which NASA describes as "thumbprint-looking," was long thought to be the result of mud or other debris sliding downward after being pushed up by a glacier or other geographical shift. It's called the Lomonosov crater, and new research supports a very different theory as to how it got there. Instead of being simply the result of gravity pulling dirt downhill, scientists now believe it could very well be the last remaining mark of an astroid that violently struck Mars billions of years ago. What's more, the characteristics of the crater support the idea that when the rock struck the planet, the spot it hit was actually an ocean, leading to multiple huge tidal waves as the displaced water was pushed from and pulled into resulting crater. |

Indian Hindu party crackdown on abattoirs spreads, stoking Muslim unease Posted: 29 Mar 2017 05:43 AM PDT By Rajendra Jadhav and Mayank Bhardwaj MUMBAI/NEW DELHI (Reuters) - A crackdown on unlicensed abattoirs in India's most populous state has spread to other states ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party, as Hindu hardliners press a political agenda that risks alienating the country's Muslim minority. The move started after Modi appointed Yogi Adityanath as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh state following the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) landslide victory in elections there this month. |

Japan loans Manila military planes for South China Sea Posted: 28 Mar 2017 02:42 AM PDT The Philippines Monday took delivery of two Japanese military surveillance aircraft to help it patrol vital sea lanes in the South China Sea, despite Manila's increasingly conciliatory stance to Beijing's claims over the disputed waters. Supreme Court rules for Texas death row inmate over IQ claim Posted: 28 Mar 2017 09:27 AM PDT The Supreme Court on Tuesday faulted Texas, the U.S. leader in executions, in a death penalty case for the second time in a month and again ruled in favor of a black inmate, finding the state used an obsolete standard to assess whether he is intellectually disabled and exempt from capital punishment. The justices, in a 5-3 decision, threw out a Texas court's ruling upholding the death sentence of Bobby Moore, 57, who was convicted at age 20 of fatally shooting an elderly grocery store clerk during a 1980 robbery in Houston. Moore's lawyers argue he is intellectually disabled and thus not eligible for the death penalty, and now get another chance to show that in court. |

This is not a drill: Nintendo Switch and NES Classic will be in stock today at Best Buy Posted: 29 Mar 2017 09:40 AM PDT As the first quarter of 2017 comes to a close, thousands of consumers are still desperately searching for Nintendo's two latest consoles: the Switch and the NES Classic Edition. In fact, it's probably even more than that, considering how quickly they sell out every time they come back in stock, but the point is that a lot of people that want these machines haven't yet had a chance to buy them. Thankfully, Nintendo is still producing and shipping more units at a respectable pace, which is why you might be able to grab a Switch or an NES Classic Edition (or both) at Best Buy on Wednesday.
Best Buy revealed via a tweet on Tuesday night that both the Switch and the NES Classic Edition would be available on Best Buy's website starting at noon CT (1:00 PM ET) on Wednesday. The tweet specifically refers to "limited quantities," so you'll need a quick trigger finger to have a chance to secure one. https://twitter.com/BestBuy/status/846859457032204288 Despite the amount of time that has passed since the release of the NES Classic Edition, the retro console is still selling for close to three times its retail value on eBay. Many Switch listings are floating around $500 as well, so rather bidding on one of these consoles, keep an eye out for these announcements. If you aren't able to dedicate the time to grab a Switch or an NES Classic from Best Buy today, you can always use this stock tracking site to keep an eye on other retailers for Nintendo's consoles in the future. |

Go get these crazy MacBook deals while you can Posted: 29 Mar 2017 02:04 PM PDT Apple's computers don't come on sale very often, so if you can't weasel a student discount, you're probably going to be stuck paying full retail price. Even when prices do drop, it's normally on old models that are being discontinued. So, when a store has a sale on every version of the new MacBook Pro and the Mac Mini, you'd be well advised to take note and go find your credit card.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro, with and without Touch Bar, is likely going to be the most popular deal here. Apple positioned the $1,500 13-inch Pro as a replacement for the MacBook Air with a little more power, but that pricetag makes it a difficult sell for students or anyone else who's not sure they need a $1,500 laptop. At $1,300 from B&H, it's a much better deal. So is the 13-incher with Touch Bar, which is also $200 off, bringing the entry-level price down to $1,600. For that, you get a Core i5, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. If you need the same power but a little more space, you can also level up to the $1,800 version with a 512GB SSD. The biggest saving is reserved for the 15-inch MacBook Pro. One of the nicer versions is $300, as $2,800 will now get you a Core i7, 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD, and an AMD Radeon Pro 460 discrete graphics card. If you don't live in NY or NJ, there's also the savings on tax to consider. B&H doesn't collect sales tax when shipping to other states, so you could stand to save a bunch more cash on top of the sale price. |

Westeros can't handle the perfection of this 'Game of Thrones' wedding Posted: 29 Mar 2017 10:00 AM PDT If you're going to do a themed wedding — particularly a Game of Thrones wedding — you better get it right. Well, sometimes miracles do happen and we all feel really bad about making fun of themed weddings. Case in point: the Game of Thrones wedding shoot Katie Lee of Katherine Elena Photography recently helped to design. The photographer took pains to make sure every detail accurately reflected the show for couples who wanted to follow the theme. While it didn't include an actual couple getting married, the stylized wedding conception will surely inspire many lovebirds in the Seven Kingdoms and beyond. SEE ALSO: Everything we know about 'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Lee explained her process: "The gowns had a lot to do with finding a happy medium between fantasy and wedding as well," Lee told Mashable. "We knew that we wanted some sort of cape for Austen (who was playing Daenarys) with a very ethereal dress. For Courtney (playing Sansa), we wanted something regal and girly, but very strong. The velvet was the perfect fabric for that and the fur cuffs and stole along with the long train were perfect for her. " Image: katherine elena photography The wedding shoot was filmed at an actual "Castle" in the Blue Ridge mountains. Lee wanted to make a wedding that was simultaneously fantastical but realistic so that other couples could incorporate the theme into their weddings. "I also really wanted to highlight the strong women of the show and show off their grace and beauty, but also their power," Lee said. Hidden changes in iOS 10.3 will give your iPhone a speed boost Posted: 28 Mar 2017 07:43 AM PDT After releasing a few hundred different beta versions over the past month or so, Apple on Monday finally released iOS 10.3 to the public. Eager iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users rushed to download and install the update, and they were greeted with some nifty new features. In a post on Monday afternoon, we went through the eight best new features in iOS 10.3, including a new Find My AirPods feature, updates to the Maps app, Apple's new file system and more. There was one feature in particular that we listed in the post that deserves more attention though, and not many people realize it's even there. When Apple releases any new iOS software, hardcore Apple fans always rush to download and install it immediately, regardless of what new features Apple adds. This is a good thing for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that new iOS software always includes security updates that are crucial. iOS 10.3 is no different — it's packed full of security fixes that users should be eager to install immediately. Of course, the user-facing features are typically the main draw for new iOS updates, and iOS 10.3 has a few nice additions and changes. One set of changes in particular is worth noting, but it's hiding in plain sight so most iPhone and iPad users won't even notice it's there. Apple engineer Renaud Lienhart tweeted on Monday afternoon about something that we mentioned in passing in our post covering the best new features in iOS 10.3. "iOS 10.3 feels 'snappier,'" he said, "because many animations were slightly tweaked & shortened, for the better." https://twitter.com/NotoriousBUGS/status/846539233305124865 Long story short, Apple has made a number of small adjustments to the animations that are played when the user does things like opening an app, closing an app, or switching from one app to another. Longtime iPhone users may recall that Apple did something similar back in 2014 with iOS 7.1. The speed difference back then was much more dramatic and noticeable, but the improvements in iOS 10.3 are still nothing to scoff at. If you have an iPhone or iPad and haven't yet updated to iOS 10.3, a faster UI should be reason enough to install the update as soon as you can. iOS 10.3 is available to download in iTunes, or as an over the air (OTA) update accessing in the Settings app by navigating to General > Software Update. |
Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ announced: Release date, price, and everything else you need to know Posted: 29 Mar 2017 08:00 AM PDT They're here. No, seriously. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are really, truly here. It seemed like this day might never come considering how long leaks and rumors have been flooding the web — what started as a slow trickle quickly became roaring rapids following BGR's exclusive back in early March. Now, however, we can finally say that we'll never have to worry about another Galaxy S8 leak again. Samsung unveiled its new flagship smartphone duo during a press conference in New York City on Wednesday, and it confirmed nearly everything we've already seen all over the internet lately. There were still a few important questions that needed to be answered — namely the pricing and release date — and now every blank has finally been filled in. First and foremost, let's cover the only two questions that remained: pricing and the release date. Where the latter is concerned, Samsung confirmed that it will release the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ on Friday, April 21st. Of course you won't have to wait that long to order one of the company's hot new phones, because pre-orders will open tomorrow, March 30th at all major US carriers. Speaking of wireless carriers, pricing is in line with expectations and you can learn everything you need to know about how to buy the S8, where to buy the S8 and how much it will cost in this post. Moving on to the phones themselves, there are pretty much no surprises at all. You can read all about Samsung's stunning new designs in our hands-on Galaxy S8 and S8+ preview, but the bottom line is this: no phones on the planet are more sleek, more stunning, or more powerful than Samsung's new flagship phones. They're incredible. Here's a quick rundown of the key specs: Galaxy S8
Galaxy S8+
In the US, Samsung's Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ will be available in three different colors: Black, silver and gray. Preorders will open at 12:01AM on Thursday at all major US carriers, and they include a free next-generation Gear VR headset with Samsung's new wireless controller and an Oculus game pack. Samsung's new DeX Station accessory that enables the Galaxy S8's Desktop Experience will be sold separately. |

Intel’s new tech makes hard drives feel as fast as an SSD Posted: 28 Mar 2017 10:30 AM PDT Intel last week released an SSD that's faster and more durable than its rivals. The best thing about the Optane DC P4800X drive is that it also works as RAM memory. That's right, Optane drives may deliver cover RAM and SSD duties in the future. I say in the future because this first Optane product isn't aimed at the consumer market. Instead, it'll be used in servers for the time being. However, Intel has now announced a second Optane-branded product, the Intel Optane Memory, which targets regular computer users and should offer you a computing experience as fast as an SSD even on a system that still uses regular HDD spinning drives. Even though SSDs will significantly speed up computers, they're considerably more expensive than good old HDDs. But the Intel Optane Memory SSD is a product that'll speed up systems that still use a mechanical hard drive as the primary storage. The Optane Memory is an M.2 NVMe SSD, AnandTech explains, that will be used as a cache drive inside your computer. It comes in 16GB and 32GB capacities, which means it's not made for regular storage purposes. Instead, Intel designed the drive to be used only for caching, with the help of its Rapid Storage Technology drivers. Optane Memory caching is only supported on Windows 10 64-bit and only for the boot volume, the report explains. Furthermore, you'll need a Kaby Lake generation 200-series motherboard and Kaby Lake processors to make it all work. Furthermore, the drive might not be too power-efficient for use in a laptop for the time being. If you're thinking about combining Intel's Optane Memory with an SSD drive to further speed up your system, don't get too excited. It's likely you won't notice any performance improvements. In spite of these "limitations," the Optane Memory is a relatively cheap upgrade for desktop users who want a faster OS experience but also plenty of HDD storage. The product retails for $44 (16GB) or $77 (32GB) and is available for preorder right now with an April 24 ship date. More technical details about Intel's Optane Memory are available over at Intel and AnandTech. |
