Senator Warren launches 2020 campaign, sounds note of economic equality Posted: 09 Feb 2019 05:51 PM PST The Massachusetts Democrat, a leader of the party's progressive wing, made her announcement from a historic site in Lawrence - a city northwest of Boston that was once the hub of textile mills and which launched the U.S. organized labor movement. The fight to build an America where dreams are possible, an America that works for everyone," Warren said. "And that is why I stand here today: to declare that I am a candidate for president of the United States of America." Warren is part of an increasingly crowded and diverse field of Democrats vying for the chance to challenge President Donald Trump, the likely Republican nominee. |

Conjoined twins die in Yemen due to lack of medical equipment Posted: 10 Feb 2019 06:24 AM PST Conjoined twin boys born under blockade in Yemen nearly three weeks ago died on Saturday after attempts to secure a potentially life-saving evacuation failed. In a statement carried by the Houthi-run Saba news, the health ministry said the twins' deaths reflected the humanitarian situation Yemen's children are facing as a result of the war. The boys' plight and the flurry of international media it generated has cast the politics of Yemen's war and their human cost into stark relief. Abdelkhaleq and Abdelkarim were born in Houthi-controlled Sanaa, at a hospital so woefully underequipped after years of bombardment and blockade by the Saudi-led coalition that doctors could perform an MRI. The twins' doctors had begged for them to be evacuated to a hospital equipped to give them life-saving treatment. "They need to travel immediately. They will not be able to survive in Yemen under the social, political and economic circumstances in this country," said Dr Faisal al-Balbali, the head of the neonatal unit at al-Thawra hospital in Sanaa. But Yemen's airspace is controlled by the Saudi-led coalition and, following Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia, no civilian flights have taken off from Sanaa since 2015. The only flights permitted in and out are those operated by the United Nations. Despite offers from a Saudi organisation, the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Works, to provide the needed medical care, no way around the blockade was found. Yemen's nearly four-year war has seen the country brought to the brink of starvation, its infrastructure destroyed, as Iran-backed Houthi rebels battle the Saudi-led coalition which aims to restore the government of Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who was ousted by the Houthis in 2014. UN-led peace talks re-started in December 2018 and aim to implement a ceasefire and military withdrawal in Red Sea port city Hodeidah, and to reopen Sanaa airport. |
Trump again confuses climate change with weather in tweet attacking Amy Klobuchar Posted: 11 Feb 2019 04:10 AM PST Donald Trump attacked Amy Klobuchar on Sunday, in a tweet that appeared to demonstrate a lack of understanding about climate change. The Democratic senator had announced that she was running for the presidency earlier that day, in a speech delivered as snow fell around her in Minneapolis. The Minnesota senator added that on her first day as president she would have the US rejoin the Paris climate agreement, which Mr Trump withdrew the country from in 2017. |

"It's all about the Benjamins baby," Omar replied, referring to American $100 bills featuring the likeness of Benjamin Franklin. |

Ghani's government has been shut out of the peace talks between Taliban negotiators and U.S. envoys, with the hardline Islamist movement branding it a U.S. puppet. "It is important that the Afghan government is involved in discussions regarding Afghanistan," Shanahan told reporters traveling with him on the previously unannounced trip. |

Ralph Northam: Virginians split on calls for governor to resign after blackface scandal, poll finds Posted: 10 Feb 2019 05:27 AM PST Virginians are deadlocked over whether Governor Ralph Northam should step down after the emergence of a racist photo from the Democrat's 1984 medical school yearbook, according to a Washington Post-Schar School poll. Following the release of the image last week, which shows a man in blackface next to another in a Ku Klux Klan outfit, there have been demands for Mr Northam to resign. Mr Northam counts higher support among black residents – who say he should remain in office by a margin of 58 per cent to 37 per cent – than among whites, who are more evenly divided. |

Thai election panel disqualifies princess as PM candidate Posted: 11 Feb 2019 02:40 AM PST The Election Commission released the official list of parties' candidates for prime minister without the name of Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi, 67, the king's elder sister. The list excluded Ubolratana "because every member of the royal family comes within the application of the same rule requiring the monarch to be above politics and to be politically neutral," the panel said in a statement after a meeting. The princess had accepted the nomination of the Thai Raksa Chart party, a populist movement drawn from supporters of ousted ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who has been at the center of more than a decade of turmoil in Thai politics. |
Israel readies to raze Palestinian murder suspect's home Posted: 10 Feb 2019 03:21 AM PST The Israeli army said Sunday it had started preparations to demolish the West Bank home of a Palestinian suspected of killing an Israeli woman. The suspect was arrested over the weekend and has not yet been charged. |
Trump Is Rooting for Ocasio-Cortez’s Democratic Party Posted: 11 Feb 2019 09:18 AM PST For the moment, at least, the energy in the Democratic Party is all on the left – and I mean hard left. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the charismatic and camera-ready new congresswoman from New York, champions the Democrats' current zeal for symmetry. The filmmaker Michael Moore, for one, calls her the leader of the party and wishes the Constitution could be changed so that she doesn't need to wait until she's 35 to be president (she's 29). |

Ethan Lindenberger, 18, appealed for help on a Reddit forum, asking which vaccines he should obtain as he said had never received any, because "my parents are kind of stupid and don't believe in vaccines". After reading the advice, and consulting with a pastor, the teenager last December walked into a department of heath office in Norwalk, Ohio, and obtained vaccines for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, influenza and HPV. |
U.S. lawmakers meet on border security, scrambling to avert shutdown Posted: 11 Feb 2019 02:35 PM PST The talks, which had broken down over the weekend, restarted in the U.S. Capitol just hours before a scheduled rally in the Texas border city of El Paso, where President Donald Trump will promote his promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a proposal opposed by Democrats. In Washington, the lawmakers hope to reach an agreement on Monday to allow time for the legislation to pass the House of Representatives and Senate and get Trump's signature by Friday, when funding is due to expire for the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department and several other federal agencies. Trump, who in December said he would be "proud" to shut the federal government over border security, took a different tack on Monday. |

Toppled Malaysian leader's 1MDB trial delayed Posted: 11 Feb 2019 03:01 AM PST Former Malaysian premier Najib Razak's trial over a massive financial scandal that contributed to his government's downfall was postponed Monday, in a blow to slow-moving efforts to bring the disgraced politician to justice. Najib had been due to go on trial Tuesday for the first time over allegations linked to his involvement in the looting of Malaysian sovereign wealth fund 1MDB in a fraud that reverberated around the world. Billions of dollars were allegedly stolen by Najib and his cronies from 1MDB, which was set up to help develop Malaysia's economy, and spent on everything from high-end real estate to expensive artworks. |

Posted: 11 Feb 2019 12:34 PM PST Ilhan Omar, a newly elected US congresswoman, has been accused of antisemitism after she criticised a pro-Israel lobby group online. In two tweets posted late on Sunday night the Minnesota Democrat implied that funding from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) was responsible for US politicans' support for Benjamin Netanyahu's controversial Israeli government. Following calls from fellow Democrats for her to apologise, Ms Omar has since posted a message on her Twitter account acknowledging the backlash. |

In my forthcoming book, The Smallest Minority: Independent Thinking in the Age of Mob Politics, I consider an observation from Erich Fromm, the Marxist-Freudian social critic whose Escape from Freedom was required reading only a generation ago. Texas showdown: O'Rourke, Trump hold dueling rallies over wall Posted: 11 Feb 2019 03:49 PM PST O'Rourke, who lost in his bid for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas, promised to blast Trump for stoking "false fear" about immigrants and telling "lies" about his hometown El Paso, which Trump said was a dangerous place before it had a border fence. In a conference call with reporters, O'Rourke said his counter-rally two hundred yards from the Trump event would be a "powerful, beautiful" response to "Trump's lies about our community, the U.S.-Mexico border, immigrants, about Mexicans." Trump is traveling to El Paso to argue for a wall he says can protect Americans from violent criminals, drugs and a "tremendous onslaught" of migrant caravans. Trump, a Republican, spoke out against the Democratic attempt to cap detention beds before he left for Texas. |

'Heavy clashes' as US-backed forces make final push against IS Posted: 10 Feb 2019 06:30 AM PST US-backed forces were locked in fierce fighting Sunday as they pressed the battle against the last shred of the Islamic State group's "caliphate" in eastern Syria. The jihadists overran large parts of the country and neighbouring Iraq in 2014, but various military offensives have since reduced that territory to a patch on the Iraqi border. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), supported by a US-led coalition, announced a final push to retake the jihadist pocket late Saturday, after a pause of more than a week to allow civilians to flee. |

Massive crowds mark 40th anniversary of Iran revolution Posted: 11 Feb 2019 12:36 PM PST Iran's president on Monday insisted "enemy" plots against the country would fail as vast crowds marked 40 years since the Islamic revolution at a time of heightened tensions with the United States. "The presence of people today on the streets all over Islamic Iran... means that the enemy will never reach its evil objectives," a defiant President Hassan Rouhani told those thronging Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) Square, decrying a "conspiracy" involving Washington. Chador-clad women, militia members in camouflage fatigues and ordinary citizens marched through the capital in freezing rain to commemorate the day in February 1979 that Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini ended millennia of royal rule. |
