U.S. sends aid to Colombia-Venezuela border; Maduro rejects help Posted: 05 Feb 2019 12:36 PM PST Two officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said the aid will be staged at the main Colombian-Venezuelan border crossing at Cucuta. "I anticipate having perhaps a dozen locations all around Venezuela where such aid will be staged," the official said. The U.S. officials said trucks carrying the aid, including high-protein foods, would arrive in Cucuta this week at the request of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who last month declared himself to be the South American nation's interim president. |

Bruce McArthur, who killed eight gay men over seven years, had taken another intended victim back to his apartment in Toronto, Canada. When they arrived, they found McArthur had chained the man – identified in court only as John – to a four-poster bed and placed a black bag over his head. |
Northam’s Would-Be Successor Denies Sexual-Assault Accusation Posted: 04 Feb 2019 07:54 AM PST "Lt. Governor Fairfax has an outstanding and well-earned reputation for treating people with dignity and respect," read a statement from Fairfax's chief of staff and communications director. The statement appears to reference an accusation from Vanessa Tyson, a professor at Scripps College in California, who claims Fairfax sexually assaulted her at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. Trump comments spark Iraqi demands for US exit Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:52 AM PST Iraqi politicians on Monday hit back at Donald Trump after the US president said he plans to keep American forces in the country to spy on Iran. In an interview with CBS television, Trump reaffirmed his determination to pull the United States out of "endless wars" in Syria and Afghanistan but said American troops would stay on in Iraq, partly "to be looking a little bit at Iran". "The Iraqi constitution rejects the use of Iraq as a base for hitting or attacking a neighbouring country," President Barham Saleh said. |

Fairfax: Sexual-Assault Claim a ‘Smear’ Meant to Block Path to Governor’s Mansion Posted: 04 Feb 2019 01:41 PM PST Virginia lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax on Monday called the sexual-assault allegation leveled against him Sunday night a "smear" and implied the claim was publicized by political enemies intent on blocking his ascent to the governorship. "Does anybody think it's any coincidence that on the eve of potentially my being elevated that that's when this uncorroborated smear comes out?" Fairfax told reporters at the state capitol when asked if he believed the claim, advanced by the liberal Collective PAC, that embattled governor Ralph Northam's team disseminated the allegation. Fairfax is poised to assume the governorship should Northam cave to the mounting calls for his resignation, which began Friday after it was revealed that a photo depicting one man in blackface and another in Ku Klux Klan uniform was featured on his 1984 medical-school-yearbook page. Northam initially apologized and conceded that he did appear in the photo on Friday evening. |
Posted: 05 Feb 2019 07:14 AM PST Vladimir Putin has said he supports the creation of new hypersonic land-based missiles in response to Donald Trump pulling the US out of a nuclear arms control treaty in place since the Cold War. The Russian president said on Saturday Russia had suspended the Cold War-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty after the US's exit after Donald Trump accused Moscow of violating the pact's terms. In a meeting with the head of Russia's ministry of defence, Sergei Shoigu, and foreign minister Sergey Lavrov, Mr Putin gave his approval to plans which include the building of hypersonic land-based missiles as well as a ground-based version of the Kalibr (also known as Caliber) sea-launched cruise missile. |

Posted: 04 Feb 2019 09:50 PM PST Federal prosecutors have issued a subpoena demanding documents from Donald Trump's inaugural committee, as part of an inquiry by the US Attorney's Office in New York into whether the planning and funding of the $107m celebration of the new presidency broke the law. While special counsel Robert Mueller is looking into whether the Trump election campaign coordinated in any way with the Russian state, the Manhattan-based criminal inquiry is reportedly investigating allegations of irregularities in the inaugural committee's funding. The Wall Street Journal, citing a copy of the subpoena, reported that prosecutors asked for "all documents" related to the committee's donors and vendors, as well as records relating to "benefits" donors received after making contributions. |

Tonight's dinner: Onion tarte tatin Posted: 03 Feb 2019 10:00 PM PST Some ingredients are the cornerstone of everything you cook. Those few things you always have knocking about, which you can make dinner from in minutes. For me, they are pasta, garlic and onions. If I go to the cupboard and find any of them missing or even slightly low in stock I feel a bit panicky. Because when the fridge is bare and even the thought of going to the corner shop seems out of the question, the three of them alone will give you the most satisfying bowl of food. The other thing I love about that dish is that it puts onions (so often the base of what we cook rather than the star) front and centre. They punch above their weight, onions. All they need is a little salt, fat and acid and they are just one of the most deliciously sweet and savoury things you can eat. This tart makes great use of a couple of onions, a slosh of vinegar, and a bit of shop bought pastry. It looks impressive but it couldn't be simpler. Serve it with some crumbly goats cheese, good bread and a mustardy salad. SERVES 5 INGREDIENTS 2 large or 4 small onions 100g butter Olive oil 1 tbsp rosemary 50ml balsamic vinegar 50ml sherry vinegar or red wine vinegar 1 tbsp caster sugar 320g pre rolled puff pastry (roughly cut into a circle) Serve with goats cheese and mustardy salad Credit: Eleanor Steafel METHOD Preheat the oven to 200C/gas 6. Slice each onion in half from root to tip and peel off the skin. Cut each half into three wedges and trim off the root. Melt the butter in a heavy frying pan (the kind that can go in the oven) over a medium heat along with a glug of olive oil. Add the onions and a pinch of salt and fry for ten minutes, turning each wedge carefully every now and again. Arrange the onion wedges so that they fill the pan in a rough spiral. Add the rosemary and put the pan in the oven. Cook for another ten minutes so the onions get really soft and start to brown. Take the pan out of the oven and sprinkle over the sugar, and then the vinegar. Let it bubble up and shake the pan a little to coat the onions in the sugar and vinegar. Cook for about three minutes so the vinegar can reduce a bit. Take the pastry and lay it over the pan, tucking in the edges. Don't worry about getting it neat as it'll puff up around the onions. Put the pan in the oven and leave for about 20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and puffy. Leave to cool and set a little in the pan for about five minutes, then run a knife around the edge of the pan and flip the tart out onto a large plate. Serve with crumbly goats cheese and a mustardy salad. |

Murad, an Iraqi Yazidi woman who escaped the clutches of the Islamic State group to become a leading campaigner against sexual violence in war, and Carlos Vecchio, whom the US has recognized as Venezuela's top diplomat in Washington, are among the high-profile guests this year. |

Creamy haddock and potato bake Posted: 04 Feb 2019 07:42 AM PST You will need six 200ml ramekins or one large overproof dish. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Divide the haddock among the ramekins or place in the large dish, followed by the chives. Build a layer of potato slices on top. Heat the milk, removing it from the hob before it boils. Add the egg yolks, then whisk in the cream and season to taste. Sieve the mixture then pour over the haddock pots or dish until quite full.
