Black is back: top trends at Paris fashion week Posted: 03 Oct 2018 01:25 AM PDT Spring-summer is supposed to be about bright colours, prints and flouncy flowers. No longer if a deeply sombre Paris fashion week is any barometer. Hedi Slimane went on a voyage to the heart of black in his highly controversial debut at Celine, as did his successor at Saint Laurent, Anthony Vaccarello. Blink at Valentino, Margiela, Guy Laroche, Givenchy and even Balenciaga and you might have thought yourself at a wake there was so much black, while Rick Owens summoned up the Salem witch-hunts, smoking pyre and all. |

Top UN court sides with Iran and rules US must roll back some sanctions Posted: 03 Oct 2018 04:51 AM PDT The UN's highest court handed Iran a legal victory over the US on Wednesday when it ordered the White House to roll back some of Donald Trump's sanctions on Tehran. Judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled unanimously that parts of the sanctions the US imposed on Iran in May were illegal and must be removed. The Iranian government hailed the ruling as proof that "Iran is in the right" but the US said it was not bound by the court's decision and would not ease sanctions. Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, said he was "disappointed that the court failed to recognise that it has no jurisdiction to issue any order relating to these sanctions measures." The court ruled that the US must roll back sanctions that would hamper Iran's ability to important medicine, food, and spare parts necessary for civilian airline safety. In a 29-page ruling, the judges said that US sanctions could stop Iran importing humanitarian items and have "a serious detrimental impact on the health and lives of individuals on the territory of Iran". It also ruled that a US ban on spare airline parts had the "potential to endanger civil aviation safety in Iran and the lives of its users". Mr Trump ordered a first round of punishing sanctions on Iran in May after he pulled the US out of the 2015 nuclear agreement earlier this year. Iran petitioned the court in July, arguing that Mr Trump's decision violated a 1955 treaty signed between the countries before they became arch-foes following the Iranian revolution in 1979. Mr Pompeo announced Wednesday he was terminating the treaty in response to the ruling. "This is a decision, frankly, that is 39 years overdue," he said. "The decision proved once again that the Islamic Republic is right and the US sanctions against people and citizens of our country are illegal and cruel," the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement. "The United States must comply with its international commitments and lift obstacles to Iranian trade," it added. Javad Zarif, the Iranian foreign minister, called the decision "another failure for the sanctions-addicted US government and victory for rule of law". There was no immediate response by the US. During a hearing in August, the US argued that the ICJ did not have the authority to rule on the case because it was related to American national security. The US sanctions have already badly weakened Iran's economy and sent the riyal spiraling to new lows against the dollar. Iran has demanded that European countries find a way to offset the economic damage caused by US sanctions. Tehran has threatened to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear agreement if American sanctions choke off its economy. Hassan Rouhani, Iran's president, said Wednesday Europe had taken "a big step" towards maintaining business relations with Iran by setting up a special channel designed to allow European firms to trade with Iran while avoiding US sanctions. Analysts have been sceptical that the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) arrangement would give European firms the confidence to continue doing business with Iran but Mr Rouhani praised the measure. |

Danske Bank says US probing money laundering claims Posted: 04 Oct 2018 02:12 AM PDT Danske Bank on Thursday said it was being investigated by the US Department of Justice over possible money laundering related to more than $200 billion transferred through the Danish lender's Estonian branch. At the centre of a financial scandal that has made headlines since last year, a Danske Bank internal probe was unable to determine exactly how much of the money that passed through the branch between 2007 and 2015 may have been laundered. "Danske Bank has also now received requests for information from the US Department of Justice (DOJ) in connection with a criminal investigation relating to the bank's Estonian branch conducted by the DOJ," the bank said. |

With mainland markets shut all week for a holiday, the $4.9 billion iShares China Large-Cap ETF dropped to a two-week low in New York. |
U.S. Senate Republicans set Kavanaugh procedural vote for as early as Friday Posted: 03 Oct 2018 07:00 PM PDT McConnell, a Republican, filed a petition for a so-called cloture vote, which if successful would limit debate on the Kavanaugh nomination and start the clock ticking on a final 30-hour waiting period before the Senate could vote to confirm the nominee. After filing a cloture petition, lawmakers must wait one legislative day before proceeding to the cloture vote, according to Senate rules. |

Merkel in Israel says Iran must not obtain nuclear arms Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:30 AM PDT German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged Thursday to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons but disagreed on how as they met to showcase cooperation between their countries. The one-day visit to Israel by Merkel and members of her cabinet was part of German-Israeli government consultations held regularly, but came after Netanyahu's harsh criticism of European countries over their efforts to keep alive the Iran nuclear deal. Germany and other European countries have also repeatedly hit out at Israeli settlement building in the occupied West Bank and warned over threats to remaining prospects for a two-state solution to the conflict with the Palestinians. |

The visit comes after Netanyahu's harsh criticism of European countries over Iran, Israel's main enemy. |
Trump plans travel push to stave off 'blue wave' in House races Posted: 03 Oct 2018 09:36 AM PDT Trump's Republican Party is at risk of losing control of the House in the Nov. 6 midterm vote at a time when, historically, the party in control of the White House loses ground in Congress. Trump heads on Thursday to Minnesota where Republicans want to give a boost to two House candidates: one in an open race and another, a first-term incumbent, who is running in a Democratic-leaning district. If a "blue wave" sweeps Democrats into power in the House, they could stop Trump's legislative agenda and tie up the White House with investigations. |

Putin signs unpopular pension reform into law despite protests Posted: 03 Oct 2018 09:36 AM PDT Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday signed a deeply controversial bill to raise the state pension age for the first time since the Soviet era, the Kremlin said. The bill, which has sparked rare street protests, only needed Putin's approval to become law after the upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, passed it earlier on Wednesday. The pension reform will gradually raise the retirement age for men to 65 from 60, and for women from 55 to 60 -- the first hike in almost 90 years. |
Israel reinforces troops outside Gaza as border protests enter seventh month Posted: 04 Oct 2018 07:17 AM PDT The Israeli statements did not appear to herald any imminent offensive in Gaza but suggested stronger action at the frontier to foil any further Palestinian attempts to breach Israel's security fence during the demonstrations, which began in March. Israeli army gunfire has killed at least 193 Palestinians since, Gaza medics say. Israel accuses Hamas of orchestrating the mass-mobilizations to provide cover for attacks and distract from Gaza's economic plight, allegations it denies. |
