Israel strikes Hamas in Gaza after rocket attack injures British-Israeli family

Posted: 25 Mar 2019 12:58 AM PDT

Israel strikes Hamas in Gaza after rocket attack injures British-Israeli familyIsraeli warplanes carried out intense strikes against Hamas in Gaza on Monday night after a rocket attack wounded several members of a British-Israeli family, including two infants, and destroyed their house.  Israeli jets bombed the offices of Hamas' leader and several other facilities in what a military spokesman said was just "the beginning" of a major operation against the Islamist militant group.   There were no immediate reports of casualties in Gaza but Hamas vowed to "retaliate immediately and forcefully", raising fears that the two sides could be hurtling back towards a full-blown conflict.   Palestinian factions reportedly began firing rockets into southern Israel on Monday night as Israeli aircraft continued their raids in Gaza.  However, Hamas said late on Monday that Egypt had brokered a ceasefire to end the fighting. Hamas authorities said schools and government buildings would be open as usual on Tuesday.  Monday's escalation was sparked by a long-range rocket fired by Hamas from Gaza towards the town of Mishmeret in central Israel at around 5.20am Monday morning, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said. The rocket hit the home of Robert and Susan Wolf, originally from London, who had their children and grandchildren staying with them. The family were woken by rocket sirens and escaped moments before the house was struck.  "If we hadn't got to the bomb shelter in time I would be burying all my family," Mr Wolf said. "We would all have been dead if we didn't do what we were supposed to do."  Seven people were wounded in the blast, including his wife, who suffered a shrapnel wound to the head, and his six-month-old granddaughter who lightly injured. None of the injuries are life-threatening, Israeli authorities said.  The family's two dogs were killed in the blast, neighbours said, while the home was almost completely destroyed.  The attack in Mishmeret came just a week after rockets were fired at Tel Aviv for the first time since 2014. Israel carried out a limited round of strikes in response. However, Monday's attack was considered far more serious because it wounded Israeli civilians.   Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, was at the White House to watch Donald Trump sign an order formally recognising Israel's annexation of the Golan Heights "Israel is responding forcefully to this wanton aggression," Mr Netanyahu said. "I have a simple message to Israel's enemies: we will do whatever we must do to defend our people and defend our state." Robert Wolf stands inside his house that was hit by a rocket in the village of Mishmeret, north of Tel Aviv Credit: Amir Levy/Getty Images Mr Netanyahu cut short his trip to Washington to take charge of the crisis. The prime minister, who is up for re-election on April 9, is under pressure from political opponents to launch large-scale strikes. Israel's military said it had bombed the Gaza City offices of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas. The offices are believed to have been empty at the time.  Warplanes also destroyed buildings belonging to Hamas military intelligence branch and its internal security forces, the IDF said.   "We are just at the beginning," said General Ronen Manelis, an IDF spokesman. "A large attack is planned. I think that Hamas understands this is a significant strike following a serious incident, and ultimately, this is a price that Hamas has been due to pay for the past year."   The military wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad said in a joint statement that they intended to fight back against Israeli raids. "We will retaliate immediately and forcefully to every strike. The resistance can reach every Israeli target."  At least one rocket was fired into Israel from Gaza while the airstrikes were unfolding, according to the IDF.  The group is under intense pressure within Gaza to raise living standards and deal with horrendous economic conditions in the strip, where unemployment is at around 50 per cent.  Anti-Hamas protesters took to the streets last week under the slogan "We Want To Live". Hamas responded with a major crackdown and arrested dozens of people. Egypt and the UN have been trying to broker a long-term deal which would see Hamas promise to stop attacks on Israel in return for Israel lifting its crushing 12-year blockade on Gaza.  However, the negotiations have yielded few results and Hamas is believed to be trying to inject fresh urgency into the talks by firing rockets while at the same time avoiding a full-blown war.

'It was like Woodstock': inside the town hit by super bloom mania

'It was like Woodstock': inside the town hit by super bloom maniaAn influx of visitors, eager for Instagram fodder, prompted Lake Elsinore's mayor to shut down access to a flower-covered canyon A crowd poses for a selfie among the wild poppies blooming in Walker Canyon in Lake Elsinore. Photograph: Gregory Bull/AP The town of Lake Elsinore sits at the edge of a canyon newly bursting with color. Fields of poppies, lupins and other wildflowers spill across hillsides – usually covered with brown, scrubby plants – as though poured from a bucket of paint. In the last few weeks, large swaths of southern California have been transformed into a colorful canvas of flowers. This type of "super bloom" has happened before, but this year is especially intense – an unusually wet winter following years of drought, combined with the aftermath of a brutal wildfire season, has set the stage for what many predicted would be the best bloom in years. But the pretty picture has a dark side: the hordes of super bloom tourists overwhelming small towns without the infrastructure to handle the sudden influx. This season, Lake Elsinore has become the poster child for the super bloom tourist invasion. On a recent Sunday, the town more than doubled in population, bloated with an estimated 100,000 visitors hungry to see the flowers. "It was like Woodstock," says the city's mayor, Steve Manos. "An absolute apocalyptic scenario." Manos, a second-term mayor with a gap between his teeth and a warm smile, has a good sense of humor about the ridiculous situation he's found himself in, where fury over the influx of tourists has prompted some residents of his town to threaten – albeit, maybe in jest – to burn the fields of poppies to the ground. Speaking from his modest office, a whiteboard covered with traffic-planning scribbles hung on one wall, Manos lays out how his town's poppy fields went viral – attracting Instagram influencers and even celebrities such as Michael Jackson's son, Prince Jackson. "It became a social media frenzy," he says. The fields of poppies in Lake Elsinore attracted crowds including Instagram influencers and even celebrities. Photograph: Gregory Bull/AP The mayor has become an unsuspecting celebrity in his own right. A Facebook and Instagram video of Manos standing in front of the canyon, cheerily pleading for the crowds to stop coming to Lake Elsinore was widely shared, and also ignored. Last Sunday's influx of visitors at Walker Canyon, about five miles from the city center, brought traffic to a halt on the freeway and on the streets of the city. Poppy tourists began leaving their cars on the shoulder of the road, climbing over the guard rail, and walking directly into the canyon. The city scrambled to provide enough shuttle buses and parking for the masses. Manos says they eventually made the call to shut down access to the canyon over public safety concerns. Clearing the mountainside was nearly impossible, he says, but officials did their best by shutting down freeway off ramps. "It was a terrible scenario," Manos says. Since then, the canyon has reopened, with the local transit authority intermittently closing and re-opening certain freeway exits. But the unpredictable situation hasn't deterred visitors. On a recent weekday, while the streets of Lake Elsinore are mostly empty, Walker Canyon is buzzing with a mix of families and hip young people. Liann Walker, 44, brought her son to see the flowers. She home schools him, and says the super bloom is an educational opportunity. "I told him it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience," she says. "It didn't matter how many people were here, we were gonna come." The entrance to the canyon, a narrow dirt road just spitting distance from the freeway, has become a busy thoroughfare choked with traffic and snaking lines of parked cars. Local officials strung up makeshift fences along the canyon trail in the form of fluorescent pink and yellow police tape. But visitors seem unencumbered by the barrier, cheerfully stepping off the dirt path to take pictures with the flowers and pluck poppies to place behind their ears. Despite a chill in the air, fashionably-dressed visitors traipse up the canyon in summer dresses and sandals. Renee LeGrand takes a picture among blooming wildflowers in Lake Elsinore. Photograph: Gregory Bull/AP Bettzaira Hernandez, 20, came for the selfies. She says she saw the super bloom on Instagram, "so I dragged my boyfriend to take pictures of me". Her boyfriend stands beside her, holding a poppy in his hands. "I picked it for my girlfriend," he says sheepishly. Hernandez says they'd heard about the crowds over the weekend, and empathized with the locals. "But then again, they're not gonna stop us, there's way too much of us, so we might as well just come," she says. This super bloom is one of the most intense in recent memory, mostly thanks to the drought, which was declared officially over this year. Wildflowers used to bloom across the state but were pushed out by European grasses about 100 years ago, explained Richard Minnich, a professor in the earth sciences department of the University of California, Riverside. "Drought is our friend when it comes to wildflowers," he said. "When we have wet years the area gets dominated by these grasses, which choke out the flowers. And the way you get rid of the grasses is through an extreme drought." While there are plenty of places for tourists to see the super bloom – Palm Springs, the Borrego Desert, Joshua Tree, Carrizo Plain – it's Lake Elsinore that's been hit with the lion's share, though no one knows exactly why. Manos blamed a combination of traditional media and Instagram. "Local media picked [it] up. And then it went international." Manos paused. "And then it went up online," he said gravely. For some locals, the experience has been taxing. Samantha Tapia, an 18-year-old resident, is fed up with the traffic, and with people "taking nude pictures in the flowers". The location tag for Lake Elsinore on Instagram – usually filled with photos from local businesses or community organizations – has been transformed. "Now it's just poppies, people, and nudes," Tapia says. Wild poppies blanket the hills of Walker Canyon near Lake Elsinore. Photograph: Mario Tama/Getty Images The situation has sparked a debate in town about increasing tourism, an important pillar of the platform that got Manos elected as mayor. "Lake Elsinore is very small," says Tapia while standing in the parking lot of the local outlet mall with her friend, Adriana Vasquez, also 18. "I don't want Lake Elsinore to grow," Vasquez chimes in. "I like the no traffic and getting places quick." Yet other residents remain unphased. Dina Thaler, who owns a gift shop, says that even though her shop in the city center is several miles from Walker Canyon, on the biggest poppy days the number of customers coming in has tripled. "Whatever we get, we love," she says. Residents like Thaler will be pleased to learn the super bloom is likely to continue for weeks. As for the immediate crisis, Manos has chosen a middle-of-the-road approach: gently, graciously imploring people to go elsewhere. The city has placed a warning about super bloom crowds, emblazoned in orange, on every page of its official website. A list of other places to see the super bloom sits at the top of the city's Instagram page. But people just keep coming – in ever increasing numbers. "This Monday was worse than the last Monday," Manos says. "Tuesday was worse than the last Tuesday." He's not sure what to expect this weekend, but he's preparing for the worst.

Ethiopian Airlines questions Boeing's 'aggressive' software

Ethiopian Airlines questions Boeing's 'aggressive' softwareAn Ethiopian Airlines executive questioned whether Boeing had told pilots enough about "aggressive" software that pushes a plane's nose down, a focus of investigation into a deadly crash in Ethiopia this month. Comments by the CEO and vice president of the airline this weekend will fuel a debate over the safety of Boeing's 737 MAX aircraft, two of which have crashed in similar circumstances in the last five months. Ethiopian Airlines, Africa's most profitable airline, has robustly defended its own safety record, training and procedures after the crash on March 10 that killed 157 people.

Apple rethinks the credit card and unveils the Apple Card

Apple rethinks the credit card and unveils the Apple CardAs far as Apple events go, today's "Show Time" event is particularly intriguing, if not downright exciting. While events like WWDC are predictable in the sense that we know we're going to see updates to iOS and watchOS, Apple today is poised to announce a number of new initiatives in markets it historically has no experience in, including news subscriptions and TV production. While Apple can undoubtedly make killer hardware and best-in-class software, the notion of Apple rolling out its own TV shows, for example, is something that would have seemed like a joke even a few years ago. Suffice it to say, today's Apple event marks an interesting turning point for the company. The keynote from today's event is already underway and Tim Cook,  having already introduced Apple News Plus, just a few moments ago starting talking about Apple Pay. Notably, Cook said that there were 10 billion transactions in 2019 alone and that Apple Pay support at transit terminals will be coming soon. All of that was a prelude, though, to Tim Cook introducing a brand new credit card dubbed Apple Card. The card is made out of titanium with an accompanying app that resides inside the Wallet app. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAZiE9NtRfs As for what Apple Card brings to the table, users can sign up for it right on their iPhone and can start using it in just a few minutes. The card presents a rather straight forward interface that allows users to keep track of how much they owe how much they've spent, and more. Apple notes: > Customers can sign up for Apple Card in the Wallet app on their iPhone in minutes and start using it with Apple Pay right away in stores, in apps or online worldwide. Apple Card gives customers easy-to-understand, real-time views of their latest transactions and balance right in Wallet, and Apple Card support is available 24/7 by simply sending a text from Messages.Every time you use the Apple Card, you'll get 2% cash back immediately back into your account. It will all be funneled into a section on the app called Daily Cash. Further, if you buy an Apple product, you get 3% cash back. > Customers will receive a percentage of every Apple Card purchase amount back as Daily Cash. Unlike other cash back rewards, Daily Cash is added to customers' Apple Cash card each day and can be used right away for purchases using Apple Pay, to put toward their Apple Card balance or send to friends and family in Messages. Every time customers use Apple Card with Apple Pay, they will receive 2 percent Daily Cash. Customers will also get 3 percent Daily Cash on all purchases made directly with Apple, including at Apple Stores, on the App Store and for Apple services. With Apple Card, Apple is also aiming to be more transparent about the fees and high interest rates associated with other cards. In fact, Apple is doing away with late fees, annual fees, international fees, and over limit fees altogether. Apple boasts that it will charge users a uniquely low-interest rate and that users won't incur a penalty when they miss a payment. Apple notes that its goal is to provide an interest rate that is "among the lowest in the industry." Apple Card will also present users with a number of payment options designed to help users pay less interest. > As a way to pay less interest, Apple Card will also suggest paying a bit more every month and offers the flexibility to schedule more frequent payments."Apple Card is designed with privacy in mind," Apple's Jennifer Bailey said. With that said, Apple will never know what you bought or where you bought it. Apple, as previously rumored, will be partnering with Goldman Sachs to help launch the card, with MasterCard doing the payment processing on the back-end. The physical card is also intriguing in its own right. It has no card number on it, no CVV security code on the back, and not even an expiration date. All of that information is safely stored in the accompanying Wallet app. Notably, purchases made with the physical card will net users 1% cash back instead of 2% if they use their device.

Children of Isil's caliphate left to toil in squalid refugee camps

Children of Isil's caliphate left to toil in squalid refugee campsEight-year-old Hamed cast a critical eye at the at tent peg, raised a hammer above his head and began thwacking it into the hard, stony ground. It is heavy work, and he would rather be in school. But he has little choice. "I get about 2,000 lira for putting up one tent," he said, using the popular term here for Syrian pounds. "I can do three or four a day, so that is 8,000." That, he said, is just about enough to feed himself, his mother, and her newborn baby twice a day. "But we can't eat all the time," he said. "My mother explained, we can't spend so much money on food because we need to buy stuff for the baby now." Hamed is one of about 41,000 children in al-Hol, the largest of three sprawling camps in north eastern Syria that houses former members, children, and prisoners of the Islamic State terrorist group. And yet the lack of provision made by world governments, including Britain's, is striking. The Telegraph has seen dozens of malnourished infants as Isil families left Baghuz, Isil's last bastion, in the past two weeks. At least 108 children have already died en route to or soon after arriving at the camp, mostly from severe acute malnutrition, pneumonia, and dehydration, according to the International Rescue Committee. The vast majority of them were under five years old, and most of those babies younger than one.  Many are also carrying serious injuries from shrapnel. The fate of the children who emerged from Isil's doomed caliphate is a matter of humanitarian urgency Credit: Sam Tarling /The Telegraph The casualties included Jarrah Begum, Shamima Begum's newborn son, who died of a lung infection last month. Unicef has described the living conditions for those children who reach the camp as "extremely dire." Hamed, who spoke to the Telegraph with the permission of his German mother and on condition of anonymity, said he bitterly misses his old life in Europe. "If there was a school, I'd go to it," he said, as he took a pause in his tent work to speak to the Telegraph. "But there isn't one here." "When I was in Germany I was learning, then in Doula I learnt nothing," he said, using the Arabic word for "State" – the term many Isil families use for the group. "They just teach like the Quran... and they teach you that you have to fight. But I said: 'I don't want to fight'. I don't like to fight. I just want to be a normal one, I just want to live in a house and make my job. I don't want to fight, I don't want to be a warrior." Unicef has described the living conditions for those children who reach the camp as 'extremely dire'   Credit: Sam Tarling /The Telegraph He said he had left Germany when he was five years old, and only emerged from the Islamic State two months ago. The camp, he said, is a miserable and filthy place. "Kids poop everywhere," he said. "You have to watch where you walk. You can't just sit anywhere, like you can in Germany." It is not surprising. Adults in the section of the camp where Hamed lives told the Telegraph many of the young children have chronic diarrhoea.   "Play", if there is such a thing, involves picking on one another or chucking rocks at moving cars.   "They call me a dog and things. They think it is a joke," said Hamed, when asked about his friends. "My mother doesn't like me to be like the other children. She says maybe there is a little baby there, like three years old, and maybe you'll hit him. Even though I don't like to throw rocks," he said. "It's not a game. They come, they throw, the glass breaks," he said. "In Germany it is not like this, you're not hitting on cars. If you want to play you go to your friends, you have friends, they don't call you anything, you play a bit." The larger and more loosely regulated section of the camp reserved for Syrian and Iraqi citizens has a market which is run by Kurdish authorities in al-Hol Credit: Sam Tarling/The Telegraph Most children have little time for that though. Adults here told the Telegraph that almost every child from about the age of eight upwards is a low-paid labourer in the camp's grey economy. "They're already entrepreneurs. I think they wake up and the first thing they think is: who am I going to hit up for money today?" said Lorna Henri, a 54-year-old woman from the Seychelles who has become the de-facto guardian of two unaccompanied children in the camp. "I try to give them what I can." Ms Henri said boys generally sent by their mothers to run errands in the camp market, which children can access more easily than adults, and put up tents. Girls clean or offer to cook. The market, in the larger and more loosely regulated section of the camp for Syrian and Iraqi citizens, is crowded with small boys hauling hand carts for 200 Syrian pounds per errand. The market is crowded with small boys hauling hand carts for 200 Syrian pounds per errand Credit: Sam Tarling/The Telegraph Such Dickensian scenes are not unusual amidst humanitarian crisis. And across the Middle East, children are generally expected to pull their own weight at an earlier age than in the West. But the prospects for these children are bleak in more than one way. Radical Isil supporters continue to exert influence inside al-Hol, including by harassing women who want to remove their veils.  There have been reports of punishment tent-burnings by an underground "religious police", and several women from different countries who the Telegraph spoke to complained about being labelled "infidels" by their fellow inmates. Without intervention, there is a good chance the children here will be brought up in the same poisonous ideology that turned many of their fathers into terrorists. Without intervention, there is a chance the camp's children here will be brought up in the same poisonous ideology that turned many of their fathers into terrorists The United Nations has expressed "alarm" at the situation. Last week  Henrietta Fore, the executive director of Unicef, urged member states "to take responsibility for children who are their citizens or born to their nationals, and to take measures to prevent children from becoming stateless." Some governments have heeded the call. Last week, the French government said it had evacuated several children. But Kurdish officials have told the Telegraph that Britain has refused to take back British Isil members or their children in the camps on the grounds that it has full confidence in the legal and administrative system of Rojava, the unrecognised Kurdish proto-state in northern Syria. Jeremy Hunt, the Foreign Secretary, last week claimed that it would have been "too risky" to send British officials to save Jarrah Begum, although he remained a British citizen after his mother was stripped of her own citizenship. However, the al-Hol camp is run by the Syrian Democratic Forces, a Kurdish-led Western-backed armed group that Britain is allied to. Journalists, including from the Telegraph, and aid workers visit the camp on a regular basis, safely and without incident. Radical Isil supporters continue to exert influence inside al-Hol, including by harassing women who want to remove their veils Credit: Sam Tarling/The Telegraph Nor is it true, as Mr Hunt claimed, that journalists are afforded special protection unavailable to UK officials in Syria or in the camps. In al-Hol, the foreign women constantly exchange rumours about which governments might take Isil members back. For their children, who committed no crime, the only thing on the horizon is more arduous work. "I'd like to...sell stuff. Or you know, build houses," shrugged Hamed, when asked what he would like to do when he grows up. Those are the only careers on offer in al-Hol camp. He picked up his hammer, and went back to hitting the tent peg. His blows made little impact on the stony ground. Protect yourself and your family by learning more about Global Health Security

Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was carrying an iPhone when she was arrested last year

Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was carrying an iPhone when she was arrested last yearThe tech industry certainly has its share of scandals, but the drama surrounding Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou certainly takes things to the next level. This past December, Wanzhou was arrested in Canada (at the behest of the United States) on charges of wire fraud and improper business dealings with Iran. Wanzhou may ultimately be extradited to the U.S. as China, not surprisingly, has vehemently denied the allegations on Wanzhou's behalf. As Huawei executives would have you believe, the charges are simply a means to hinder the company's growth. The legal case involving Wanzhou is still playing out, but recently released court documents include a surprising revelation regarding the gear Wanzhou had in her possession when she was arrested. Originally made public by the Twitter account theBreakerNews, it turns out that Wanzhou had a penchant for Apple products.Upon her arrest, Wanzhou had a MacBook Air, an iPad Pro, and an iPhone 7 Plus in her possession. She was also carrying a Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design which was likely her primary device. Still, it has to be somewhat embarrassing for an executive of a company looking to dethrone Apple to be apprehended with a slew of Apple products. No you might be naturally thinking: "So she had a few Apple products on her, what's the big deal?" Well, if we go back just a few months, you may recall that two Huawei employees who were manning the company's Twitter account were demoted after they sent out a celebratory New Years tweet from an iPhone. The tweet was promptly deleted once word began to spread, but the higher-ups at Huawei were quite displeased and also cut the salary of the employees in question.Further, an internal Huawei memo obtained by Reuters at the time revealed that Huawei executives believed "the incident caused damage to the Huawei brand."All that said, Wanzho's penchant for Apple products isn't a good look.

Syria's Kurds call for international court to try IS jihadists

Syria's Kurds call for international court to try IS jihadistsSyria's Kurds on Monday called for an international court to be set up in the country to try suspected Islamic State group jihadists following the announced fall of their "caliphate". IS imposed its brutal interpretation of Islam on millions living in the proto-state that it declared across a large swathe of Syria and neighbouring Iraq in 2014. "We call on the international community to establish a special international tribunal in northeast Syria to prosecute terrorists," the Syria Kurdish administration said.

William Barr: attorney general plays Republican spear-catcher againNearly 30 years ago, Barr protected George HW Bush when Iraqgate got rough. He knows what his job with Trump entails William Barr leaves his house in McClean, Virginia, on Monday. Photograph: Joshua Roberts/Reuters Robert Mueller's work is done but the political skirmishing is far from over. The president has vowed revenge. Democrats are demanding to see the special counsel's report. One thing is certain: William Barr, the attorney general, will be at the center of a political storm in the run-up to a presidential election. But don't feel too bad for him. He's been there before. It was in 1992. Amid a luckless re-election drive, Attorney General Barr emerged as a reliable spear-catcher for a beleaguered President Bush. The afterglow of the Gulf war had faded, America was in a recession and Pat Buchanan had put a dent in the president's armor in the Republican primary. And there was an added legal wrinkle that would thrust Barr into the spotlight: when the Bush administration was accused of having illegally financed Saddam Hussein's military buildup through the extension of agriculture credits, Democrats accused Barr of orchestrating a cover-up. The current attorney general always possessed a respect for authority An investigation and report issued in 1995 by Janet Reno, Bill Clinton's attorney general, cleared the Bush administration of wrongdoing. Department of Justice investigators "did not find evidence that US agencies or officials illegally armed Iraq or that crimes were committed". But it was a different story back in the day. Congress and William Safire, a New York Times columnist and former Nixon speechwriter, were at loggerheads with the administration. Barr said and did exactly what needed to be said and done to protect the prerogatives of the executive branch. In October 1989, George HW Bush had signed off on National Security Directive 26, which sought to boost Iraq as a counterbalance to Iran. In hindsight, the president and his team had emboldened Saddam. The invasion of Kuwait was a huge unintended consequence. Also, reports emerged of an FBI raid at the Atlanta branch of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL), an Italian bank that lent or credited Iraq with approximately $4bn, which in turn was purportedly used for illegal arms purchases. In June 1992, Christopher Drogoul, the manager of BNL's Atlanta branch, would plead guilty to 60 counts of a 347-count federal indictment which charged him with defrauding BNL and the government in connection with $4bn in unauthorized loans to Iraqi interests "including $1.6bn in US-guaranteed loans". With the Gulf war over, Henry Gonzalez, a Texas congressman and chair of the House banking committee, made Iraqgate his hobby horse, taking to reading classified documents into the Congressional Record. For the attorney general, that was a bridge too far. Faced with Gonzalez's insolence, Barr barked: "No soup for you!" Just kidding. Rather, he sounded like this: "Public disclosure of classified information harms the national security … in light of your recent disclosures, the executive branch will not provide any more classified information." Gonzalez replied in kind: "Now your letter suggests that the Bush administration plans to move from foot dragging to outright obstruction." Once again, past sure looks like prelude. A few months later, House Democrats demanded Barr appoint an independent counsel to investigate the sins of the Bush administration. They were rebuffed. In a letter to the House judiciary committee, Barr tossed around such phrases as "not a crime", "simply not criminal in any way", "nothing illegal", and "far from being a crime". As to the separate question of whether administration officials deliberately altered commerce department documents in an effort to conceal military sales to Iraq and purposely misled Congress about Iraq policy, Barr contended the Department of Justice was up to that task. He wrote: "These are the kinds of allegations that are routinely investigated by the Public Integrity Section and there is no conflict of interest that precluded their handling these matters in the normal course." According to a high-school classmate of Barr's, the current attorney general always possessed a respect for authority. Barr grew up in a conservative household. His brother served in Vietnam. Donald Barr, the attorney general's father, resigned as headmaster of the exclusive Dalton school in Manhattan after clashing with the board of trustees. In his resignation letter, the elder Barr wrote: "Everyone knows that I am somewhat anachronistic in my views of the educational leadership of a school." From the looks of things, Trump has the attorney general of his dreams. Like the supreme court justice Brett Kavanaugh, Barr is a loyal conservative who comes with a Bush family seal of approval. For this president, it doesn't get better than that.

Apple News+ is a $9.99 subscription service for magazines and newspapers

Posted: 25 Mar 2019 10:17 AM PDT

Apple News+ is a $9.99 subscription service for magazines and newspapersApple's "show time" event kicked off at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET today, and Tim Cook has taken the stage. While we are excited to see what Apple has in store for the world of streaming entertainment, the first announcement today is about Apple News. As expected, Apple is making use of its acquisition of Texture's magazine subscription service and add magazines to its new service, which it has dubbed Apple News+. Over 300 magazines will be featured in Apple News+, such as National Geographic, The New Yorker, and Vanity Fair, and more. In addition to magazines, the service will also feature some of the world's top newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal. Apple News+ will cost $9.99/month. All of the premium content can be found in the new News+ tab, which lives at the bottom of the Apple News app. You can save your favorite magazines as well, so that you won't ever miss a new issue. Apple also showed off covers with moving images, and demonstrated how the magazines have been successfully ported to both the small screen of the iPhone and the larger display of the iPad. Apple also announced that it will not share demographic or subscriber information with publishers, which explains why some major names didn't make the cut. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im5c5WR9vMQ As Apple explained during its keynote, it would cost more than $8,000 to subscribes every magazine and newspaper in Apple News+ separately. This is "the only place" where you can pay for access to all of them, plus, you can share your subscription with your family, so you won't all have to pay for your own accounts. And the first month is free. Apple News+ will be available in the US and Canada first, and reach Australia and the UK in the fall. If you want to try out Apple News+, you'll be able to do so later today after an iOS update rolls out.

Does Amazon even make money when Fire 7 tablets are on sale for $35, like it is right now?

Does Amazon even make money when Fire 7 tablets are on sale for $35, like it is right now?At just $50, we've often wondered what kind of margin Amazon could possibly make on the Fire 7 Tablet. It's an excellent compact tablet that gives users easy access to all of Amazon's services, so perhaps the company just tries to break even on the hardware. If you're a Prime subscriber though, you can buy a Fire 7 Tablet today for just $34.99. Amazon has to be losing money at that price, right!?Here's some additional info from the product page: * 7" IPS display; 8 or 16 GB of internal storage (up to 256 GB with microSD) * 1.3 GHz quad-core processor * Up to 8 hours of battery life * Alexa enabled * 1 GB of RAM * VGA front-facing camera + 2 MP rear-facing camera with 720p HD video recording * Dual-band Wi-Fi * 90-day limited warranty * Enjoy millions of movies, TV episodes, songs, books, apps, and games

The U.K. prime minister is under pressure from colleagues inside her Cabinet to name a date when she will step down, with some arguing this would help her win support for her Brexit deal, people familiar with the matter said. May is hoping for one more chance to put the divorce agreement she's negotiated with the European Union to a vote in the House of Commons this week.

Venezuela blames 'attack' as another crippling blackout hitsPower went out in much of Caracas and nearly a dozen states in the early afternoon, stirring memories of a week-long outage earlier in the month that was the most severe in the country's history. Service was restored in many areas within hours on Monday and Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez said in a televised broadcast that power was being "progressively reestablished." "We have suffered a new attack on our national electricity system's load and transmission center today," Rodriguez said, adding that the event had "similar characteristics" to the March 7 "attack." The blackouts come as the country is experiencing a deep political crisis after National Assembly President Juan Guaido invoked the constitution to assume the interim presidency in January, arguing that Maduro's May 2018 re-election was illegitimate.
