Nature pushed to the brink by 'runaway consumption'

Nature pushed to the brink by 'runaway consumption'Unbridled consumption has decimated global wildlife, triggered a mass extinction and exhausted Earth's capacity to accommodate humanity's expanding appetites, the conservation group WWF warned Tuesday. From 1970 to 2014, 60 percent of all animals with a backbone -- fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals -- were wiped out by human activity, according to WWF's "Living Planet" report, based on an ongoing survey of more than 4,000 species spread over 16,700 populations scattered across the globe. "The situation is really bad, and it keeps getting worse," WWF International director general Marco Lambertini told AFP.

8 days until the midterm elections: Where things stand

Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:01 PM PDT

8 days until the midterm elections: Where things standRep. Ted Budd, R-N.C., has one big advantage over his opponent, Democratic challenger Kathy Manning: The 13th District's map was intentionally drawn to privilege Republicans. Budd defended gerrymandering, saying that unless the Supreme Court says otherwise, "it is constitutional to politically gerrymander." Gerrymandering, which has helped Democrats in the past, is more likely to help Republicans this time because the GOP controlled the redistricting process in more states after the 2010 census. Two-term Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., is spending much of her reelection campaign's final stretch stumping in and around heavily Republican Webster County, which President Trump won by nearly 80 percent of the vote two years ago.

Some good news: Doughnut the 28-pound cat has a new home

Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:30 AM PDT

Some good news: Doughnut the 28-pound cat has a new homeMove over Bruno: Another thicc cat's found his happy home. The enormous 28-pound cat's name is Doughnut, and the internet fell in love with him on Friday when the Jacksonville Humane Society posted photos of him on Facebook.  OH LAWD HE COMIN! #chonk pic.twitter.com/ZeZc0iI9A3 — Jax Humane Society (@jaxhumane) October 26, 2018 According to the original post showing off all of Doughnut's curves, one requirement for his new home was "an owner who is willing to keep him on his strict diet." They acknowledged that while many of us might like a chunky cat, it's really not very healthy for Doughnut to be that overweight.  "His new family will need to work with a vet to get him to the right weight at the right pace," the post stressed. But all is well, according to a recent Facebook update sharing that Doughnut is now in a happy home with a new owner. The Jacksonville Humane Society Facebook page said that pictures of the cat in his new home will be posted soon. Hopefully by the time we get new photos of Doughnut, he'll look a little slimmer. After all, a healthy cat is a happy cat. We all wish Doughnut the best of luck on his weight-loss journey.  [H/T: NBC New York] WATCH: This smart feeder will stop your pets from mooching off each other

Jimmy Carter sends letter to Georgia Republican governor candidate asking him to resignMr Carter, himself the former governor of the Peach State, asked Mr Kemp to vacate his position since the office is in charge of monitoring election results. In a letter made available to the Associated Press, Mr Carter cited his vast experience watching elections around the world through the Carter Center, an Atlanta-based human rights organisation: "One of the key requirements for a fair and trusted process is that there be a nonbiased supervision of the electoral process". The 94-year-old politician and volunteer with Habitat for Humanity wrote to Mr Kemp in what the AP called "less as a partisan who has endorsed [Ms] Abrams and more as the former president who's spent the decades since he left the Oval Office monitoring elections around the world".

Guy tries to shoo cat off his car, breaks windshield instead

Guy tries to shoo cat off his car, breaks windshield insteadViral Hog shared a video on Monday of a man attempting to shoo a cat off his car by kicking his windshield. Of course! Always the right way to go about something like this. Naturally, things did not go as planned. One kick wasn't quite enough to get the cat to move, so he gave the windshield another forceful kick, resulting in a sizable crack. "I was resting in the car when a cat approached the front windshield," the man — whose identity is concealed — told Viral Hog. "I wanted to scare him with my foot but apparently, I hit the glass way too hard and the glass broke."  Probably best to just get out of the vehicle and shoo the cat in the future. Or better yet, just let the little fuzzball hang out if you're not in a rush to go anywhere.

Ideal timing between pregnancies is at least one year: studyWomen who want to bear children in their 30s and 40s often face a dilemma regarding how much time to wait between pregnancies. Doctors often advise they wait 18 to 24 months. A study Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), based on 150,000 pregnancies in Canada from 2004 to 2014, concludes that waiting less than a year between pregnancies raises the risks, regardless of a woman's age.
