Saudi, Egypt lead Arab states cutting Qatar ties, Iran blames Trump Posted: 05 Jun 2017 05:16 AM PDT By Noah Browning DUBAI (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain severed their ties with Qatar on Monday, accusing it of supporting terrorism and opening up the worst rift in years among some of the most powerful states in the Arab world. Iran -- long at odds with Saudi Arabia and a behind-the-scenes target of the move -- immediately blamed U.S. President Donald Trump for setting the stage during his recent trip to Riyadh. Gulf Arab states and Egypt have already long resented Qatar's support for Islamists, especially the Muslim Brotherhood which they regard as a dangerous political enemy. |
Posted: 05 Jun 2017 01:51 PM PDT An official in Flint, Michigan, has been forced to resign after a recording of him using a racial slur to describe residents of the city surfaced. Phil Stair, a longtime employee of the Genesee County Land Bank, resigned after water activist and independent journalist Chelsea Lyons released the tape. Mr Stair, a white man, had made the comments while Ms Lyons was with him driving to a restaurant, according to Truth Against the Machine, an organisation where Ms Lyons is a reporter. |

US, Australian officials warn of returning foreign fighters Posted: 05 Jun 2017 12:26 AM PDT Top US and Australian officials warned on Monday that battle-hardened and angry foreign fighters may return to Southeast Asia from the Middle East and take up arms in their own countries. The warning follows the weekend terror attacks in London, which were claimed by the Islamic State group, and comes amid a growing jihadist threat in the Philippines. IS fighters will "come back with battlefield skills, they'll come back with hardened ideology, they'll come back angry, frustrated, and we need to be very aware of that," Australian Defence Minister Marise Payne said. |

Mexico ruling party claims win in key state, rivals cry foul Posted: 04 Jun 2017 10:35 PM PDT Mexico's ruling party narrowly held onto the governorship of the country's largest state Sunday, according to preliminary election results, but a fiery leftist hoping to ride the race to the presidency cried foul. The election in the state of Mexico, President Enrique Pena Nieto's home state, was closely watched as a bellwether ahead of presidential polls next year. It was a must-win race for Pena Nieto and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which had to fend off a fierce challenge from an upstart leftist party, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), and its founder, presidential hopeful Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. |

Father Banned from Seeing Son Due to Mother Being Married to Another Man? Posted: 04 Jun 2017 05:00 PM PDT Attorney Rebekah Brown-Wiseman says, "The courts, unfortunately, see it very differently than the average person. "So, if the mother and her husband object to the biological father basically being a parent to his own biological child, they're going to allow it," she explains, telling The Doctors that in the state of Florida these cases are difficult to resolve due to this archaic law. |

Did Sadiq Khan really say there is ‘no reason to be alarmed’ about terrorism as Donald Trump claims? Posted: 05 Jun 2017 07:04 AM PDT Donald Trump is repeating his criticism of Sadiq Khan, after London underwent a terror attack. "Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his "no reason to be alarmed" statement," he wrote. What Mr Khan actually said was that there is no reason to be alarmed about the increased police presence on the streets after the attack. |

Iran urges 'dialogue' to resolve Gulf row over Qatar Posted: 05 Jun 2017 11:15 AM PDT Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday urged Qatar and neighbouring Gulf Arab countries that have severed diplomatic ties with it to engage in dialogue to resolve their dispute. Dialogue is imperative, especially during blessed Ramadan," Zarif tweeted, referring to the Muslim month of fasting. Zarif also phoned his Qatari counterpart to discuss the latest development, and also spoke to the foreign ministers of Arab and Muslim countries, including Algeria, Turkey, Indonesia and Iraq. |
Rumored MacBook Pro update will finally give users something to get excited about Posted: 05 Jun 2017 05:50 AM PDT As a developers conference, it's no surprise that Apple's WWDC keynote today -- not to mention its scheduled programs for the rest of the week -- will primarily focus on software. From iOS 11 to new updates involving macOS, watchOS, and tvOS, Apple's event today will have a decidedly software bent. That said, rumor has it that Apple may also make a few surprise hardware announcements as well, including a new edgeless 10.5-inch iPad and a long-rumored Siri-based speaker designed to go head to head with Amazon's Echo and Google Home.
One particularly exciting hardware update that has arguably been a few months overdue centers on Apple's flagship MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar. While nothing drastic is likely, there have been rumors that Apple later today will announce some nice spec bumps to its flagship notebook. While a spec bump isn't traditionally an update worth getting excited about, the MacBook Pro isn't exactly a traditional device. Though sales have seemingly been healthy, Apple's MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar was a controversial product from the get-go and elicited no shortage of backlash from both developers and creative professionals who quickly categorized the product as overpriced and underpowered. Not only was the Touch Bar greeted with a lukewarm response, but professionals bemoaned that RAM on the MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar was limited to just 16GB. Not to worry, Apple today is expected to issue a relatively minor MacBook Pro refresh that will offer prospective users more bang for the buck. Not only will Apple's revamped MacBook Pro come equipped with speedier Kaby Lake processors from Intel, but rumor has it that the refresh will support 32GB of RAM. All told, Apple's rumored MacBook Pro enhancements will go a long ways towards erasing some of the longstanding criticisms that have shrouded the machine since it's launch late last year. Further, there are also rumblings that we'll see a MacBook refresh later today as well. And as a final point, rumor has it that Apple's MacBook Air line is dead. |

Another exciting new iOS 11 feature just leaked ahead of WWDC 2017 Posted: 05 Jun 2017 08:36 AM PDT We've seen plenty of iPhone 8 rumors so far, but not so many iOS 11 leaks. However, with just a few hours to go until Apple kicks off its annual WWDC keynote, the iPhone maker inadvertently leaked two exciting iOS 11 features, including the brand new iOS Files app and a feature that goes hand in hand with it.
Discovered by Steven Troughton-Smith inside the Feedback app for beta testers, a new Drag and Drop feature will let users easily copy and paste content from one app to another. The full entry reads "Split View/Drag and Drop," and suggests it's supposed to serve iPad users who use the split view functionality. https://twitter.com/stroughtonsmith/status/871654476549169153 No such feature exists in current iOS versions, including stable releases or betas, so it's likely that Apple will launch it as part of iOS 11. The two features, including Files and drag and drop, would offer users better control over their files as well as a way to quickly move content between apps open side by side on an iPad. And that includes various actions such as saving and uploading attachments, or even downloading and uploading content to the web. It's unclear whether the feature would work in any way on iPhones, which don't support the split view mode on Apple's iPad. The drag and drop mention is still present in the Feedback app, and you can find it even on the iPhone version of the app. Apple will introduce iOS 11 on Monday during its WWDC 2017 keynote, at which point it should confirm both the Files app and the drag and drop feature. |

Turkey maintains ban on German visits to Incirlik base Posted: 05 Jun 2017 04:39 AM PDT Turkey will maintain a ban on visits by German politicians to a key airbase used for raids against the Islamic State group in Syria, the foreign minister said Monday. The Incirlik base in southern Turkey has been at the centre of a dispute between the NATO allies since Ankara blocked a visit last month by German parliamentarians. "Right now it is possible to visit the NATO base in Konya (in central Turkey), not Incirlik," Mevlut Cavusoglu said at a news conference with his German counterpart Sigmar Gabriel in Ankara. |

Roche's Alecensa bests Pfizer's Xalkori in lung cancer trial Posted: 05 Jun 2017 04:38 AM PDT By Deena Beasley CHICAGO (Reuters) - Roche Holding AG's Alecensa halted the spread of lung cancer for a median of 15 months longer than treatment with rival Pfizer Inc's Xalkori with fewer side effects, according to trial results presented on Monday. Both drugs are designed to treat advanced non-small cell lung cancer in patients with a mutation of the ALK gene, which is found in about 5 percent of all NSCLC patients. About 12,500 Americans are diagnosed with ALK-positive NSCLC each year, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, which featured the study results at its annual meeting in Chicago. |
