Venezuelan army moves to block aid shipments, sparking US anger Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:07 PM PST Venezuela's opposition leader Juan Guaido warned the army of its responsibilities on Wednesday after soldiers blocked a key border bridge, sparking angry demands from the United States to allow desperately needed humanitarian aid to enter the country. Venezuela's army had to choose between "a dictatorship that does not have an iota of humanity, or to side with the constitution" from which he takes his legitimacy, Guaido said in an interview on Colombian radio. "The Maduro regime must LET THE AID REACH THE STARVING PEOPLE," Pompeo said in a tweet. |

Tusk’s ‘Place in Hell’ Jibe Reflects Fear and Frustration in Brussels Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:30 PM PST A longer-than-scheduled, bad-tempered phone call between May and Tusk a week ago prompted a surge of concern in EU circles that May is unable to get any divorce deal through Parliament, according to European officials who declined to be named. Tusk was horrified that May was still asking the EU for solutions to end the impasse rather than coming up with credible ones of her own. May visits Brussels on Thursday as part of her efforts to get the EU to change the most controversial part of the divorce deal -- the Irish border backstop. |
Italy to host Venezuela delegation at Guaido's request Posted: 06 Feb 2019 09:46 AM PST Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido is to send a delegation to Italy, where the government is one of few European Union countries not to have backed the self-proclaimed interim president. Italy's far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said he will meet the team on Monday after Guaido sent a letter requesting talks "as soon as possible" to present "the action plan to relaunch democracy in Venezuela through free and fair elections". Britain, France, Germany and Spain are among 20 EU nations to side with Guaido this week after President Nicolas Maduro ignored their demands that he announce new presidential elections by February 3. |
Antonio Pastini: Pilot killed when his plane crashed into Florida home had fake police credentials Posted: 06 Feb 2019 09:31 AM PST The man piloting a small plane who died and killed a family after flying into a California home over the weekend was carrying falsified credentials identifying him as a retired Chicago police officer, authorities said on Tuesday. Antonio Pastini was killed when the twin-engine plane broke up shortly after takeoff and fell in pieces in Yorba Linda, igniting a fire in a home where four people died on Sunday. The 75-year-old was initially identified as a retired officer but Chicago police said there were no records of him working for the department. |
'El Chapo' jury deliberations to stretch into fourth day Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:55 PM PST Guzman, 61, is accused of trafficking tons of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine into the United States as leader of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel. The 11-week trial in federal court in Brooklyn, in which more than 50 witnesses testified, offered the public an unprecedented look into the inner workings of the cartel, named for the state in northwestern Mexico where Guzman was born in a poor mountain village. The defense has argued Guzman was set up as a "fall guy" by Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a Sinaloan drug kingpin who remains at large. |

On abortion, Trump agenda likely leads to Supreme Court, not Congress Posted: 06 Feb 2019 11:07 AM PST Bolstered by Trump's appointment of two conservative justices, the nine-member court could soon begin to pare back abortion rights, starting with a major case from Louisiana that is one of several similar pending appeals. The addition of Trump appointees Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch could alter the conservative-majority court's approach to abortion. Kavanaugh replaced Justice Anthony Kennedy, a conservative who backed abortion rights in key rulings in 1992 and 2016. |

Elizabeth Warren apologises for calling herself Native American in bid to end ancestry controversy Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:41 AM PST Senator Elizabeth Warren said on Tuesday she was sorry she identified herself as a Native American for almost two decades, reflecting her ongoing struggle to quiet a controversy that continues to haunt her as she prepares to formally announce a presidential bid. Ms Warren is on the cusp of formally announcing her presidential bid and will be vying to lead a party that has become far more mindful of non-white voters and their objections to misuse of their culture. "I can't go back," Ms Warren said in an interview with The Washington Post. |

Factbox: Guaido vs. Maduro - Who is backing Venezuela's two presidents Posted: 05 Feb 2019 12:36 PM PST A slew of European nations this week joined the United States and other Western countries in recognizing opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela's legitimate head of state, heightening a global showdown over Nicolas Maduro's rule. Guaido says the May 2018 vote in which Maduro won a second term was a sham and on Jan. 23 invoked a constitutional provision to declare himself president, promising free and fair elections. The 35-year-old has since won the support of many western nations although powerful countries such as Russia, China and Turkey continue to back Maduro and denounce what they call foreign meddling in Venezuela's domestic affairs. |

21 Savage a 'Dreamer' who may be victim of ICE vendetta: lawyers Posted: 05 Feb 2019 05:23 PM PST The lawyers battling to save rapper 21 Savage from deportation from the United States appealed Tuesday for compassion, casting him as one of the blameless 1.8 million "Dreamers" -- immigrants brought in illegally as children through no fault of their own. The 26-year old chart-topper -- real name Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph -- was detained in the southern city of Atlanta on Sunday by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who say he is British and has been living in the US illegally since overstaying his visa until 2006. "Mr Abraham-Joseph, like almost two million of his immigrant child peers, was left without immigration status as a young child with no way to fix his immigration status," his six attorneys said in a joint statement. |

Apple Watch ‘fall detection’ feature credited with saving man’s life Posted: 04 Feb 2019 06:03 PM PST One of the more interesting things about the Apple Watch is how the narrative behind the wearable has seemingly done a 180. Early on, the Apple Watch was positioned as something of a fashion accessory. Remember, for instance, the outrageously expensive Apple Watch Edition? Today, in sharp contrast, Apple prefers to tout the device as a fitness tracker and health monitor. Over the last few months, we've seen quite a few stories involving the heart rate monitor on the Apple Watch being used to detect potentially life-threatening health conditions. Indeed, it's no exaggeration to say that the Apple Watch has helped save numerous lives at this point. And now comes word that the fall detection feature first introduced on the Apple Watch Series 4 has started saving lives as well. According to a report from NRK, a 67-year old from Norway named Toralv Østvang credits his Apple Watch with saving his life. The story is that Østvang experienced a serious fall in his bathroom whereupon his Apple Watch automatically contacted rescue personnel. Recall, the Apple Watch, upon detecting a fall, will send a message to local emergency services -- along with information regarding your location -- if it detects that a user has been immobile for a full minute following a fall. About a half hour after the fall, rescue workers arrived on the scene and found Østvang lying on his bathroom floor, unconscious and bloody. In the midst of the fall, Østvang also sustained three fractures to his face. The fall detection feature on the Apple Watch is obviously geared towards older folks and, as a result, is off by default unless a user happens to be 65 or older. |

May Heads to Northern Ireland in Search for a Brexit Answer Posted: 05 Feb 2019 12:51 AM PST The embattled premier has until next week to secure changes to the backstop -- the insurance policy meant to keep the Irish border open in the absence of a broader trade deal -- that will satisfy anti-EU members of her Conservative Party and win her a majority in Parliament. To do so, she is trying to reopen talks with Brussels on the deal she spent 18 months negotiating before Parliament rejected it by a record margin last month. |
Central African Republic signs peace deal with armed groups Posted: 05 Feb 2019 04:41 AM PST Central African Republic signed a peace deal with 14 armed groups on Tuesday following two weeks of talks in the Sudanese capital Khartoum. The peace deal was announced on Saturday by the African Union but the terms were not immediately released. Central African Republic has been rocked by violence since 2013 when mainly Muslim Selaka rebels ousted then-president Francois Bozize, prompting reprisals from mostly Christian militia. |

State of the Union: Who were Trump's invited guests for address to Congress? Posted: 06 Feb 2019 03:41 AM PST Donald Trump has finally delivered his second State of the Union address to Congress following a week's delay enforced by the government shutdown. In a wide-ranging speech from the floor of the House of Representatives, the president preached American exceptionalism, rallied his conservative support base and again stressed his concerns about the immigration crisis on the southern border and the need for a wall to bolster national security. In attendance were a number of special guests invited by President Trump, chosen because they embody issues at the centre of the national debate. |
Monsanto versus farmer battle goes into 4th judicial round Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:17 PM PST A 12-year-old judicial battle pitting a cereal farmer against Monsanto, the biotech giant, goes to a fourth round Wednesday before the French courts. Farmer Paul Francois won his initial case in 2012, and its appeal by Monsanto in 2015, after suing the US firm for poisoning him through inhalation of its Lasso weedkiller. Now, after a technical review by the final court of appeal, the case gets bounced back to appeal level after a ruling by the higher court that the case should be decided not so much on whether Monsanto provided adequate information about its product, but on whether its chemicals were dangerous, according to Francois Lafforgue, one of the farmer's lawyers. |
