Trump says Obama ‘was very nice to me with words,’ but there has been ‘no relationship’ Posted: 01 May 2017 08:13 AM PDT President Trump repeated his unsubstantiated claim that former President Obama ordered surveillance of Trump Tower in a somewhat tense, interview-ending exchange with CBS News, released Monday, about his relationship with his predecessor. "Face the Nation" host John Dickerson interviewed Trump in the Oval Office. After asking if the president had received any helpful advice from Obama, Trump broached the topic of surveillance. |

Mexico captures protégé, turned rival, of drug lord Chapo Guzman Posted: 02 May 2017 09:08 AM PDT Mexican security forces on Tuesday arrested accused drug kingpin Damaso Lopez, believed to be locked in a bloody struggle for control of the Sinaloa Cartel against the sons of its captured leader Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. The attorney general's office announced that its agents with the help of the army had captured Lopez, one of the top-ranking figures in the world's most successful drug cartel, which has been destabilized by "El Chapo's" extradition in January to the United States. |
Michelle Obama explains her iconic side-eye at Trump's inauguration Posted: 02 May 2017 08:32 AM PDT Alright, alright internet — settle down. We've had our fun. We've imagined all the things that could have been going through Michelle Obama's head on Trump's inauguration day. We've memed the hell out of the gift-giving photos. Now it's time to accept the truth. The former first lady explained at the American Institute of Architects convention Monday that - though it really, really appeared so (and we loved it) - she actually was not trying to shade the Trump family on inauguration day. Let's quickly take a look at the not shade: SEE ALSO: These Michelle Obama memes are the internet's coping mechanism the only good moment of this inauguration is michelle jim-facing the camera like "why did she give me this box" pic.twitter.com/WoGAWfKS0l — jomny sun (@jonnysun) January 20, 2017 michelle is all of us for the next 4 years pic.twitter.com/jurAn0zMz0 — joshy (@acidictly) January 20, 2017 Michelle's face pic.twitter.com/UYrcfAfm3t — The Office (@OfficeScenes) January 20, 2017 So what was really going on? The former FLOTUS explained that the beginning of the inauguration marked the final moments that her teenage daughters, Sasha and Malia, would have in the White House - the home in which they've largely grown up. Instead of shading Melania Trump's oddly timed gift, Obama was simply trying to hold it together on a tough day for her family. "That moment of transition, right before the doors opened and we welcomed in the new family," Obama explained, "Our kids were leaving out the back door in tears, saying goodbye to people." Taking it in on one last walk through the People's House. A post shared by Michelle Obama (archived) (@michelleobama44) on Jan 18, 2017 at 9:55am PST "I didn't want to have tears in my eyes because people would swear I was crying because of the new president," Obama added. (She's probably not wrong.) Though the family was sad to leave their home of eight years, Obama heartbreakingly reiterated that she has no desire to run for office in 2020. "I wouldn't ask my children to do this again," she said. Michelle, please just let us dream. WATCH: Trump thought being president would be easier than being a reality star businessman |

This is the stupidest thing on Microsoft’s new laptop Posted: 02 May 2017 12:01 PM PDT Microsoft has a new laptop. It's called the Surface Laptop, and it appears to do many things well. It's basically a spiritual successor to the MacBook Air, but more quirky, because it comes in various colors and has fabric on the keyboard. Unfortunately, Microsoft took its rather good-looking laptop out behind the woodshed and murdered it with one particularly dumb choice: there's no USB-C port.
Microsoft chose to go with its proprietary magnetic charger, a USB-A port, a miniDisplayPort, and a headphone jack. Apple was lambasted (and rightly so) for the lack of ports on its new MacBook, but at least it had an explanation: USB-C is the future, therefore we're just going to stick only USB-C ports on our futuristic laptop. Microsoft's approach seems to just be to give a stiff middle finger to common sense. USB-C is the future. It's not the only port you need right now -- chances are you still have a whole bunch of things that use USB-A -- but it is a fantastic standard for the future. The port is tiny, you can connect it both ways, and it's incredibly powerful. You can use it to charge device, you can use it to hook up a laptop to a monitor and charge it with just one cable. You can use the same cable that you use to charge your phone to charge your laptop. Even better, using USB-C for charging gives people choice over chargers. I've been using a tiny USB-C charger for my laptop for months now, and it really does feel like the future. Remember when cellphones used to have proprietary chargers, and then everyone switched to microUSB and the world became a better place? That's what's about to happen with laptops, but Microsoft apparently doesn't want to be a part of it. During the education-focused event, Microsoft said that the Surface Laptop would be "just as good on graduation day as day one." As USB-C infiltrates portable hard drives, projector hookups, flash drives and phone cables, Surface Laptop-toting students are going to be left behind. That's the opposite of what Microsoft wants, and I just don't understand. |

IS attack kills dozens at Syria camp Posted: 02 May 2017 12:48 PM PDT A jihadist assault led by suicide bombers killed dozens Tuesday at a camp for the displaced near Syria's border with Iraq, as pressure grows on the Islamic State group in both countries. The violence left at least 46 people dead and came as another surprise IS attack on Tuesday killed 10 soldiers in Iraq, to the south along the border. 'Humans of New York' captured a precious moment between Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds Posted: 02 May 2017 06:39 AM PDT Brandon Stanton, the brains behind the popular Humans of New York series, has a magical way of getting folks around the world to open up in ways that even celebrities are not immune to, no matter how many years of media training they've endured. Trump administration relaxes some Obama-era school lunch rules Posted: 01 May 2017 01:42 PM PDT U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, in one of his first acts after his Senate confirmation last week, signed a proclamation that postpones sodium reductions, makes it easier to serve foods without whole grains, and allows the return of chocolate- and strawberry-flavored milk with fat. "Certain aspects of the standards have gone too far," said Perdue, speaking at an elementary school in Virginia. The change comes as Donald Trump, one of the more fast-food-friendly presidents in recent years, has vowed to slash regulation. |

Korea warns of nuclear test 'at any time' Posted: 01 May 2017 12:19 AM PDT North Korea warned Monday that it will carry out a nuclear test "at any time and at any location" set by its leadership, in the latest rhetoric to fuel jitters in the region. Tensions on the Korean peninsula have been running high for weeks, with signs that the North might be preparing a long-range missile launch or a sixth nuclear test -- and with Washington refusing to rule out a military strike in response. The sound of a spacecraft passing between Saturn and its rings is straight out of 'Alien' Posted: 02 May 2017 11:42 AM PDT On April 26, NASA's Cassini spacecraft shot between Saturn and its innermost ring, going where no human-made object has gone before. Cassini has already made some new discoveries thanks to its dive through the ring plane. One of those insights is that the area between the planet and its rings "sounds" different than other parts of space surrounding Saturn. SEE ALSO: The Cassini spacecraft dove between Saturn and its rings: Here are the photos to prove it According to new audio files released by NASA, the 1,500-mile-wide gap between Saturn and its distinctive rings actually sounds pretty empty. A raw image of Saturn as seen by Cassini not long after its ring dive.Image: NASA/JPL-CaltechOther parts of space around Saturn are filled with particles of dust that can be heard by Cassini's plasma detector. This instrument picks up the signal from dust that vaporizes as it hits the fast-moving spacecraft. But the gap between Saturn and its rings is comparitively, and unexpectedly, silent. "The region between the rings and Saturn is 'the big empty,' apparently," Cassini project manager Earl Maize said in a statement. "Cassini will stay the course, while the scientists work on the mystery of why the dust level is much lower than expected." Scientists compared data picked up from Cassini's ring dive and a previous pass through a faint ring of dust and debris on Dec. 18, 2016. The 2016 data sounds crackly, with a high number of plasma pops heard as Cassini passed through the ring itself. The data taken by the instrument late last month, however, sounds very different. Instead of crackly pops, the April data sounds more like static from a TV screen punctuated by a high whistling noise that, according to NASA, is a type of plasma wave that scientists are planning to investigate further. "It was a bit disorienting — we weren't hearing what we expected to hear," Cassini scientist William Kurth said in the statement. "I've listened to our data from the first dive several times and I can probably count on my hands the number of dust particle impacts I hear." During that first ring dive, the bits of debris Cassini ran into were only about the size of the particles found in smoke, NASA said. Cassini is now in the last phase of its mission at Saturn. The spacecraft will continue to make dives through the gap between Saturn and its rings until the planned end of its mission in September, when it will make its death dive into the world's thick atmosphere. Hamas softens stance on Israel, drops Muslim Brotherhood link Posted: 01 May 2017 01:53 PM PDT By Nidal al-Mughrabi and Tom Finn GAZA/DOHA (Reuters) - The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on Monday dropped its longstanding call for Israel's destruction, but said it still rejected the country's right to exist and backs "armed struggle" against it. In a policy document presented in Doha by its leader Khaled Meshaal, Hamas also said it would end its association with the Muslim Brotherhood, a move apparently aimed at improving ties with Gulf Arab states and Egypt, which view the Brotherhood as a terrorist group. Israel responded to the announcement by accusing Hamas of trying to "fool the world", while the group's main Palestinian political rival, the Fatah faction of President Mahmoud Abbas, also reacted coolly to the policy shift. |

Boaters stranded 4 miles from land were saved by Siri on an iPhone 7 Posted: 01 May 2017 12:12 PM PDT The iPhone's "Hey Siri" feature helped save three fisherman from what could have otherwise been a tragic turn of events. According to Fox 4 News out of Florida, three fisherman were cruising along about 4 miles off the coast when they began encountering a violent spate of waves. Before long, the crew's 18-foot boat proved no match for the waves as water began overtaking the boat.
Per the report, one of the fisherman used the "Hey Siri" feature on his iPhone 7 to call 911. Shortly thereafter, a helicopter from the coast guard went out in search of the trio before finding them and bringing them back to safety. "They had an iPhone 7, which I'm learning today is waterproof. However, he couldn't touch the screen with his fingers because they were cold, but he used Siri to call 911," Sgt. James Barrett said. Notably, this isn't the first instance we've seen of iPhone owners utilizing "Hey Siri" in order to call for help when dialing 911 wasn't feasible. Just a few months ago, for example, a four-year old used the feature in order to call 911 after his mom passed out. And this past summer, a mother in Australia used the feature to call for help while she tended to her 1-year-old daughter who had stopped breathing. As the BBC reported a few months back:
The "Hey Siri" feature on the iPhone was originally introduced on the iPhone 6s and is made possible by Apple's M9 motion coprocessor. Apple has advertised the feature as a helpful way to use the iPhone's various features hands-free -- with the company's Cookie Monster commercial being a prime example -- but "Hey Siri" appears to be incredibly useful in emergency situations as well. |

U.S. Supreme Court sides with Venezuela over oil rigs claim Posted: 01 May 2017 09:16 AM PDT By Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday tossed out a lower court's ruling that had allowed an American oil drilling company to sue Venezuela over the seizure of 11 drilling rigs in 2010 but allowed the business another chance to press its claims. Siding with Venezuela, the justices ruled 8-0 that a lower court that had given the go-ahead for the suit must reconsider whether claims made by Oklahoma-based Helmerich & Payne International Drilling Company can proceed. Writing for the court, Justice Stephen Breyer said the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 2015 used the wrong standard in denying Venezuela immunity from the lawsuit. |
