Tesla switches on giant battery to shore up Australia's grid Posted: 30 Nov 2017 10:36 PM PST Tesla Inc switched on the world's biggest lithium ion battery on Friday in time to feed Australia's shaky power grid for the first day of summer, meeting a promise by Elon Musk to build it in 100 days or give it free. "South Australia is now leading the world in dispatchable renewable energy," state Premier Jay Weatherill said at the official launch at the Hornsdale wind farm, owned by private French firm Neoen. Tesla won a bid in July to build the 129-megawatt hour battery for South Australia, which expanded in wind power far quicker than the rest of the country, but has suffered a string of blackouts over the past 18 months. |

Ex-Stanford swimmer appeals sexual assault conviction Posted: 02 Dec 2017 10:30 AM PST A former Stanford University swimmer found guilty of sexual assault in California has appealed his conviction after serving a sentence that many condemned as an example of how the justice system fails to take such crimes seriously enough. Brock Turner, then 19, was arrested in 2015 after two of his fellow students at the Northern California university saw him outside of a fraternity house on top of an unconscious woman. After serving three months of a six-month sentence, Turner was released early for good behavior. |

Korea Posted: 01 Dec 2017 09:46 PM PST A natural earthquake of magnitude 2.5 occurred Saturday near North Korea's nuclear test site, the fourth such tremor since the North's most recent atomic explosion there, South Korean officials said. Minor tremors have been detected after the North carried out its sixth and most powerful nuclear test underground in September, damaging geological structures in the area, it added. |

You'll never believe how happy Holland the rescue dog gets after a haircut Posted: 01 Dec 2017 07:09 AM PST A small pup now smiles from ear to ear in the comfort of her new and loving home, thanks to a team of dedicated animal rescuers. Little Holland fell into the hands of the Trio Animal Foundation in Chicago for urgent medical care after she endured uninhabitable conditions at a "open access" shelter that only accepted abandoned animals. According to TAF's Facebook post, once the canine arrived, her fur was completely matted and covered her entire body. "The width of the matted fur on her legs was over two-three inches thick," TAF wrote in the post. "A shell like casing of matted fur covered most of her back and it looked like an exoskeleton from behind." SEE ALSO: Rescue dog uses his smile to help find a forever home Turning Holland into the princess she is today was no easy task. Grooming the pup took more than two hours due to the thickness of her long fur dreadlocks around the dog's face. The post stated that the rescuers decided the best way to remove the hair would be to sedate Holland and transfer her to a veterinarian for surgical grooming. Other than the dog's unkempt mane, Holland had no other serious medical issues but, unfortunately, lacked emotional stability. Well, all of that was about to change. Soon enough, after weeks of treatment and much needed belly rubs, Holland was back and better than ever. Just look at her now! Holland had even found friendship (or maybe a budding romance) with a handsome therapy dog named Miller. The adorable tail-wagger has even officially found her forever home. According to the TAF Facebook post, Holland's new mom and dad couldn't be more excited about their new fur baby. Now the little girl is happier than ever. The Russian Army Is Inflating Giant Dummy Tanks Posted: 01 Dec 2017 07:53 AM PST Before the Allied invasion of Normandy in World War II, the American and British armies constructed armies of dummy tanks and landing craft in the south of England to confuse the German high command of their intent. Imagine a Sherman tank in the form of a bouncy castle — ridiculous up close but enough to fool a fighter pilot in the air. This tradition of inflatable dummy tanks and phony ballistic missiles — imitasiia or imitation — is still alive and well in Russia thanks to the 45th Separate Engineer-Camouflage Regiment based in Vladimir Oblast east of Moscow. |
