N. Korean boat skipper 'charged over Japan theft' Posted: 28 Dec 2017 12:30 AM PST Japanese prosecutors reportedly charged a North Korean fishing boat captain for theft on Thursday, accusing him of making off with items ranging from home appliances to solar panels. The 45-year-old was among 10 North Korean "fishermen" spotted aboard a tiny wooden boat struggling in bad weather off the northern island of Hokkaido in late November. Some of them admitted to "taking out" some electronic products from a remote Japanese island where they landed briefly to take refuge. |

Mueller probe outgrows its ‘witch hunt’ phase Posted: 27 Dec 2017 02:00 AM PST Trump has returned to one phrase — "witch hunt" — time and again — and repackaged with typical Trumpian hyperbole. "This is the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!" Trump tweeted last May after ex-FBI director Robert Mueller was appointed as Justice Department special counsel to oversee the probe. |

Vietnam jails 15 for foiled airport 'terror' attack Posted: 27 Dec 2017 09:30 AM PST Vietnam jailed 15 people on Wednesday for a foiled terrorism plot to detonate petrol bombs at the country's busiest airport ahead of a national holiday, state media reported. Terrorism attacks are rare in Vietnam, though the conservative communist government routinely jails dissident bloggers and human rights lawyers who are critical of the state. A court in Ho Chi Minh City sentenced 15 people to between five and 16 years in jail after they were convicted of planting petrol bombs at Tan Son Nhat international airport in the commercial southern hub, state-controlled Thanh Nien newspaper reported. |

How Achievable The 6 Most Common New Year's Resolutions Really Are Posted: 27 Dec 2017 03:17 PM PST With the holidays coming to a close, it's time to get serious and set some New Year's resolutions for 2018. In the spirit of setting achievable goals, we asked therapists to weigh in on six of the most common resolutions and grade them on a scale of 1-5 (with 1 being "very attainable" and 5 being "very difficult"). It also requires, rather uncomfortably, changing your diet and exercise ― two of your three most basic behavioral patterns (the other being sleep) ― and then maintaining those changes indefinitely. Before I was a psychologist, I worked as a personal trainer: You have to have structured goals and set attainable goal posts. |

Dressed in a black suit, General Constantino Chiwenga, 61, took the oath of office in Harare, pledging to be "faithful" to Zimbabwe and to "obey, uphold and defend the constitution". Chiwenga's ascent to the country's second most powerful job has further consolidated the military's power in the politics of the southern African country. |

Makayla Dabney, an 18-year-old from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, gave her dad the best Christmas present anyone could hope to receive. SEE ALSO: At Christmas, these UNESCO protected botanical gardens turn into a living fairytale She wraps it really, REALLY well. (In the video, it takes him about five minutes to get through all the boxes and wrapping paper! If you're really impatient, skip ahead to about 5:30.) There's a lot going on as she gives an emotional speech — the other kids playing around, with the excitement of Christmas. But when her dad, Stephen Dabney, opens it, he's moved to tears. Apple sued over slowing phones in France, where planned obsolescence is a crime Posted: 28 Dec 2017 01:31 PM PST The legal fallout over Apple slowing down old iPhones could produce a criminal court proceeding after a French organisation filed a criminal lawsuit. Since it emerged that Apple slowed old iPhones to prevent them from malfunctioning due to poor battery performance, the company has faced a slew of lawsuits in the United States and Israel. In a statement, the organisation claimed Apple's actions violated a 2015 French law that prohibits "the practice of planned obsolescence, which is defined by the use of techniques by which the person responsible for the marketing of a product aims to deliberately reduce the duration to increase the replacement rate". |

In an opinion piece in the New York Times, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said some 90 percent of Pyongyang's export earnings had been cut off by a series of international sanctions after the Trump administration "abandoned the failed policy of strategic patience". |

Russia says Tokyo's deployment of U.S. missiles a blow to relations Posted: 28 Dec 2017 05:30 AM PST A decision by Japan to deploy a U.S. missile defense system will damage Moscow's relations with Tokyo and is a breach by Washington of a landmark arms control treaty, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday. Japan formally decided this month it would expand its ballistic missile defense system with U.S.-made ground-based Aegis radar stations and interceptors in response to a growing threat from North Korean rockets. "Actions like these are in direct contradiction to the priority of building military and political trust between Russia and Japan, and, unfortunately, will impact in a negative way on the whole atmosphere in bilateral relations, including negotiations over the peace treaty problem," Zakharova told a weekly briefing. |
