Rescuers vow to take 'no risks' in evacuation of Thai cave boys Posted: 04 Jul 2018 06:34 AM PDT Thai rescuers vowed to take a "no risk" approach to freeing 12 boys and their football coach from a flooded cave, as fresh video emerged Wednesday showing the team in good spirits following their astonishing discovery nine days after going missing. Next they have three main options: diving out of the cave system, exiting through another hole if one can be found -- or drilled -- or waiting out the rainy season underground. |

Polar bear kills Canadian man protecting his daughters in rare attack Posted: 05 Jul 2018 11:19 AM PDT A young Inuit father has died while protecting his children from a rare polar bear attack in Canada's eastern Arctic territory. Aaron Gibbons, a 31-year-old resident of the Inuit hamlet of Arviat on the southern tip of Nunavut, reportedly encountered the bear on Sentry Island, a popular hunting and fishing spot situated about 10 kilometres away from the hamlet, on the west coast of Hudson Bay. "My qangiaq [nephew] died a hero today," Gibbons' uncle, Gordy Kidlapik, said. "The bear surprised him and his children, so he put himself between them and the bear to let them escape. The bear had no fear." "To hear…his young daughter having to call on CB radio and crying to her grandmother, my aik, immediately after the mauling...we were very helpless. To hear my aik calling out to my qangiaq, asking if he's okay...very heart breaking. His body was brought in at 11:15." Gibbons, who apparently was armed with a rifle that was out of reach at the time of the incident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ecologists warn that polar bear attacks on humans are becoming increasingly common due to climate change driving bears onto the land. Polar bears are increasingly being driven onto the land as Arctic ice melts Credit: AFP Mr Kidlapik also hit out at tour companies who he said were lowering polar bears' fears of humans by offering access to the animals. He warned that tourism was leaving Inuit residents of communities involved "to defend against approaching bears that lost their fear of humans. " However Canadian zoologist Susan Crockford, who studies polar bear activity, said that up close and personal exposure to the animals might not be the reason for the fatal attack. "Nobody can draw any conclusions until we get more information about the age and condition of the bear," said Ms Crockford, an adjunct professor at the University of Victoria in the Canadian province of British Columbia. "Very young bears between three and five years old are not only inexperienced hunters, but they also have to compete with older, bigger males who take the seals away from the younger bears and they lose out in the competition game." Nunavut's Department of Environment said it was "working closely" with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and wildlife officers in their investigation. |

'Race against water' as rain threatens Thai boys in the cave Posted: 04 Jul 2018 09:40 PM PDT Thai rescuers on Thursday said they may be prodded into a complex extraction of 12 boys and their football coach from a flooded cave if forecast rains hammer the mountainside and jeopardise the rescue mission. Thirteen sets of diving equipment have been prepared for the team, who have endured 12 nights underground in the Tham Luang cave complex in northern Thailand. In a sign of increased urgency, Narongsak said medics and Thai navy SEAL divers are assessing whether the boys are fit and well enough to be taken out early -- apparently softening his instance on Wednesday that "no risk" will be taken with the evacuation. |
Germany's Merkel, Hungary's Orban clash over how to be humane Posted: 05 Jul 2018 05:35 AM PDT German Chancellor Angela Merkel clashed with her Hungarian counterpart over the responsibilities Europe had toward refugees seeking sanctuary on the continent in a tense press conference marked by unusually passionate disagreements. "I believe the soul of Europe is humanity and if we want to retain this soul and play a role in Europe with these values then Europe can't simply decouple from the need and suffering." But Orban, who since 2015 has positioned himself as Merkel's adversary in migration policy, said Europe best showed humanity by removing incentives for refugees to come to the continent. |

Cherry picking: China looks to replace US farm goods in trade war Posted: 04 Jul 2018 12:06 AM PDT Simmering trade tensions between the world's top two economies are set to erupt into a full-blown trade war Friday, with Washington poised to impose new tariffs on $34 billion in Chinese goods. Beijing has pledged to hit back dollar for dollar, placing a new tax on American goods like cherries, soybeans, autos, pork and whiskey, putting them at a disadvantage to their global rivals. Washington's list is heavy on tech goods, aiming in part to shift supply chains away from China, while Beijing has put politically sensitive US farm goods in the firing line. |

Firefighters make progress on Northern California wildfire Posted: 05 Jul 2018 11:23 AM PDT By Dan Whitcomb and Keith Coffman LOS ANGELES/DENVER (Reuters) - Firefighters in Northern California have made progress on a stubborn blaze west of Sacramento, officials said on Thursday, allowing some residents to return to their homes after they were evacuated. In Colorado, meanwhile, firefighters were still battling eight major blazes that have burned over 140,000 acres and destroyed more than 100 homes, while authorities have arrested a person suspected of starting the largest blaze in that drought-stricken state. "The weather will become hotter and drier into the weekend and fire growth potential remains high." The so-called County Fire had consumed 86,000 acres (35,000 hectares) of grass, brush and dense scrub oak as of early Thursday, Cal Fire said. |

Ex-Malaysian PM Najib charged with corruption Posted: 04 Jul 2018 01:44 AM PDT Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak was formally charged Wednesday with corruption linked to a multi-billion dollar financial scandal that contributed to his shock election defeat less than two months ago. Allegations of massive corruption were a major factor behind the electoral earthquake in May that toppled Najib's long-ruling coalition and ushered in a reformist alliance headed by his 92-year-old former mentor Mahathir Mohamad. Wednesday's court hearing was the latest step in a fast-moving investigation into alleged wrongdoing by Najib, his family and many of his close political and business allies. |

Egypt unearths ancient artefacts 'hidden' in WWII Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:55 AM PDT Hundreds of ancient pottery items have been discovered in an Alexandria museum in a hiding place "most probably" created during World War II, Egypt's antiquities ministry said Wednesday. Pots and other receptacles dating back to Greek, Roman, Coptic and Islamic eras were discovered "during restoration work" in a garden inside the Greco-Roman museum of Alexandria in northern Egypt, the ministry said in a statement. "These pots were most probably hidden by (British) archaeologist Alan Rowe and... employees in the museum's garden during World War II", Ayman Ashmawy, head of Egyptian antiquities at the ministry, said in the statement. |

China blocks Micron sales amid U.S. trade tensions, chip battle Posted: 04 Jul 2018 01:55 AM PDT TAIPEI/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - A Chinese court has temporarily barred Micron Technology Inc from selling its main semiconductor products in the world's biggest memory chip market, citing violation of patents held by Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp (UMC). The ruling, which was disclosed by UMC and its state-backed Chinese partner, slammed shares of Idaho-based chipmaker Micron, which gets half of its revenue from China. The ban comes amid an escalating trade spat between Washington and Beijing that is spurring China to accelerate its goal of developing its own domestic chipmakers to curb the heavy reliance on U.S. firms like Micron and Qualcomm Inc. |
