Turkey tells Saudis to prove missing journalist left consulate, U.S. urges Saudis to support inquiry Posted: 09 Oct 2018 12:14 AM PDT BUDAPEST/ANKARA, WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Monday called on Riyadh to prove its claim that Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who has been missing since last week, left the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, while the Washington called on Saudi Arabia to support an investigation into his disappearance. The disappearance of Khashoggi, previously a prominent newspaper editor in Saudi Arabia and an adviser to its former head of intelligence, has sparked global concern, particularly after Turkish sources said over the weekend that authorities believed he was killed inside the consulate. |

U.S.' Pompeo hails 'significant' North Korea progress; experts skeptical Posted: 08 Oct 2018 02:45 PM PDT Pompeo told reporters Kim had said he was ready to allow international inspectors into North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear testing site and the Sohae missile engine test facility as soon as the two sides agreed on logistics. North Korea has said an inspection of that site would be allowed if the United States took "corresponding measures," of which there has been no sign. |

Hubble in trouble: space telescope out of action as gyroscope fails Posted: 08 Oct 2018 10:51 AM PDT The Hubble Space Telescope has been put out of action by a gyroscope problem. Nasa announced Monday that one of Hubble's gyroscopes failed last Friday. As a result, the telescope is in so-called safe mode with non-essential systems turned off. That means all science observations are on hold. Rachel Osten, Hubble's deputy mission head at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, said: "It's true. Very stressful weekend. Right now HST is in safe mode while we figure out what to do. "Another gyro failed. First step is try to bring back the last gyro, which had been off, and is being problematic. We'll work through the issues and be back." Nasa said mission controllers are working to restore the 28-year-old telescope. An image of Saturn taken by Hubble Credit: AP In a statement the space agency said: "Mission experts are taking steps to return Hubble to great science." Gyroscopes are needed to keep Hubble pointed in the right direction during observations. Astronomers use the orbiting observatory to peer deep into the cosmos, revealing faraway solar systems as well as galaxies and black holes. Launched in 1990, Hubble has had trouble with its gyroscopes before. Spacewalking shuttle astronauts replaced all six in 2009. The telescope could work with as few as one or two gyroscopes, although that leaves little room for additional breakdowns. The problem with Hubble comes after Nasa's Opportunity Mars rover went silent on June 10 following a dust storm on the red planet. |

Nobel peace prize winner wants IS jihadists to face trial Posted: 08 Oct 2018 11:52 AM PDT Nobel peace prize winner Nadia Murad wants to see members of the Islamic State jihadist group face justice -- not death, but trial in a courtroom, she said on Monday. Murad was one of thousands of young women from the Yazidi religious minority who were kidnapped by IS in Iraq four years ago and held in sexual slavery, but was able to escape. Older women and men faced summary execution during the IS assault on the Yazidis, which the United Nations has described as a genocide. |

Women aren't united against Kavanaugh. That's a dangerous myth Posted: 07 Oct 2018 11:00 PM PDT After all was said and done in the Senate hearings for US supreme court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, before the vote decided the fate of Roe v Wade and many other progressive agendas, my friends kept putting their faith in female senators. Yes, the Republicans control the Senate and this is Trump's nominee, but they have six women serving as senators, and how could any woman not be moved by the testimony of Dr Christine Blasey Ford? How could the senators not feel a stronger solidarity with their gender than their party? |

In Los Angeles, Columbus Day is out; Indigenous Peoples Day is in Posted: 08 Oct 2018 05:43 PM PDT The city of Los Angeles celebrated its first Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday, joining the growing ranks of local governments across the country replacing the traditional Columbus Day holiday with observances of Native American history and culture. The daylong commemoration began with a sunrise ceremony by native American residents, some in traditional dress, followed by a 5-kilometer run through downtown led by City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell, himself a member of the Wyandotte Nation who grew up in Oklahoma. O'Farrell was principal sponsor of legislation the council passed last year designating the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day in place of Columbus Day in the nation's second-largest city. |
Wounded Syrian soldiers learn to live with war disabilities Posted: 09 Oct 2018 04:02 AM PDT Many Syrian government soldiers, after years of intense fighting, now face a new reality of learning to live without one or more of their limbs or with other serious disabilities. One hospital manufactures 60 prosthetic limbs a day, reflecting the high demand in a nation wracked by a bloody civil war. |

Posted: 08 Oct 2018 05:14 AM PDT China's foreign minister demanded the US stopped "groundless criticism" of his country's policies as American secretary of state Mike Pompeo's visit to Beijing got off to a frosty start. While the pair also exchanged typical diplomatic pleasantries and emphasised the need for cooperation, Mr Wang's airing of grievances underscored the two countries' worsening relations. The foreign minister said: "Recently, as the US side has been constantly escalating trade friction toward China, it has also adopted a series of actions on the Taiwan issue that harm China's rights, and has made groundless criticism of China's domestic and foreign policies. |

Thank you r/relationships for giving me the drama fix I crave Posted: 09 Oct 2018 02:14 PM PDT This is Ode To... , a weekly column where we share the stuff we're really into in hopes that you'll be really into it, too. Who doesn't love internet drama? I, for one, live for it. Watching someone get ratio'd on Twitter fills me with glee. If someone posts screenshots, I'll meticulously go through every shred of each snarky text. When I scroll past an argument on Facebook, I can't help but dive into the thread and digest every single comment. SEE ALSO: Staten Harry is the internet's cutest lip-sync star Lurking around internet drama satisfies me more than any Hulu original ever could. When I need to get away from the real world, I turn to vitriolic threads for entertainment. On especially rough days, when I finally tire of bingeing beloved trash shows like Gossip Girl, I venture into the crème de la crème of drama: Reddit's r/relationships. Everyone on r/relationships has a bone to pick: no matter how stable you think your relationship is, it wouldn't stand a chance against this subreddit. Some posters genuinely want advice, from asking for support through grief to admitting to a drug problem to a partner. But if you're looking for the messiest of messy, sort r/relationships by controversial and buckle up. Sure, your partner might forget to wash the dishes, or they may play too much Fortnite. But at least they aren't nearly as bad as the OPs of r/relationship's controversial tab. Here are just a few gems from these insecure, overbearing dumpster fires. Exhibit A: The man who feels insecure about his girlfriend's height. Sorry your girlfriend is too good for you, pal! Sometimes you can joyfully watch an OP get torn to shreds in the comments, like this woman who won't stand up against her hateful family. She even goes as far as dismissing their blatant racism as being "very conservative." Hard yikes, right? There are examples that make you want to scream, "Get out!! Get out now!" One woman's boyfriend, feels threatened that all of his partner's family members are male. It's bizarre how deep-set his insecurity runs. Apparently, he's worried that OP has been "masculinized due to being raised by a dad," and that by spending time with her family, she'll be "masculinized even more." What does that even mean? The subreddit's infamy has even crossed over to Twitter, where accounts like @redditships screenshot and tweet hilariously unfortunate posts. Me [19F] with my boyfriend [19M] of 1 year, how can I make him stop using twitch memes in every day conversation? pic.twitter.com/1ek46xQ971 — relationships.txt (@redditships) September 25, 2018 How to break it to my large headed (23F) girlfriend that I don't want her wearing my (30M) t-shirts anymore because she stretches out the head-hole. pic.twitter.com/ELDLkomuj4 — relationships.txt (@redditships) October 9, 2018 It was even a short lived meme. /r/relationships In vain I [28M] have struggled. It will not do. I told her [20F] I love her, most ardently, and she rejects me. Does she expect me to rejoice in the inferiority of her circumstances? — ikra (@dunwaIl) July 24, 2018 r/relationships: I [20F] am about to marry my fiancé [20M] and i want to invite my dad [40M] [40M] [40M] but i can't tell my mom [40F] and also I don't know which one is my real dad? — scary shelley (@emmjolras) July 25, 2018 /r/relationships I [27M] have been pretending to be the ghost of her [17F] father to give her music lessons but I'm worried about making a move because of a facial disfigurement. Should I kidnap her and take her to my underground candlelit lair? — ✍️ (@neonacropolis) July 23, 2018 Let's just take a moment to appreciate r/relationships for blessing us with clueless, horrifying, and endlessly entertaining stories of the internet's worst romantic partners. Most heavy arms out of planned Syria buffer zone: monitor Posted: 09 Oct 2018 02:15 AM PDT Jihadists and Turkish-backed rebels have withdrawn most heavy weapons from territory around Syria's last major opposition stronghold ahead of a Wednesday deadline, a monitor said. The weapons pullback is the first major test of a truce deal brokered by government-backed Russia and rebel-backer Turkey last month to avoid what the United Nations warned would be the appalling humanitarian consequences of a major government offensive. Under the agreement, all rebel groups have a Wednesday deadline to withdraw all their heavy weaponry from a 15- to 20-kilometre (nine- to 12-mile) buffer zone along the front line in Idlib province and adjacent areas of the northwest. |
Posted: 08 Oct 2018 11:12 PM PDT Taylor Swift has spoken out in support of two Democratic candidates in Tennessee for November's mid-term elections. The pop star, who is a registered voter in Tennessee, made a rare political statement on Sunday 7 October, where she said she planned to vote for Phil Bredesen for US Senate, and also for Jim Cooper – who has making a re-election bid to Tennessee's 5th Congressional District. The 28-year-old also offered a strong criticism of Marsha Blackburn, the Republican nominee. |
