New Orleans removes last of four statues linked to pro-slavery era Posted: 19 May 2017 06:06 PM PDT Crews in New Orleans on Friday used a crane to lift a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee off its pedestal as the city removed the last of four monuments its leaders see as racially offensive. Most of a crowd of about 200 people cheered just after 6 p.m. (2300 GMT) as the bronze figure of Lee with crossed arms was pulled from atop a 60-foot marble column in the center of a busy traffic circle. Landrieu said the four monuments were out of step with a modern city that embraces people of all races while acknowledging that New Orleans was also once one of the biggest slave markets in America. |

Death toll rises in southern Libya attack, defence minister suspended Posted: 20 May 2017 12:37 AM PDT By Ayman al-Warfalli BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - A spokesman for east Libyan armed forces said on Friday that as many as 141 people had been killed a day earlier in an attack on a southern air base, and the head of Libya's United Nations-backed government suspended his defence minister pending an investigation into the incident. The attack at Brak Al-Shati air base shattered a truce in the area, which in recent months had become a flashpoint between military alliances based in eastern and western Libya. Ahmed al-Mismari, a spokesman for the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA), said 103 of those killed in the attack at the air base were LNA troops, most of them from the 12th Brigade stationed there. |

In the US, obstruction of justice is a federal offence in which someone "corruptly attempts to influence, obstruct or impede the due and proper administration of the law", they told the US broadcaster. Mr Comey initially believed that he could instruct the new President in what was appropriate during their communications, but later became convinced the President was intending to try and affect the direction of the investigation, the source told the US broadcaster. |

Rouhani, a 68-year-old moderate cleric who spearheaded a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, said Iranians had chosen the "path of engagement" and rejected extremism after he took 57 percent of the vote against 38 percent for hardline cleric Ebrahim Raisi. "The Iranian people want to live in peace and friendship with the rest of the world, but will not accept any threat or humiliation," Rouhani said on state television. |

Ignore Donald Trump's words on his foreign tour. Pay attention to his actions Posted: 20 May 2017 08:31 AM PDT Donald Trump is a man full of good ideas. On Friday, Trump hightailed it out of a confrontational United States to begin his auspicious first foreign trip as president. Previous US presidents have visited either Canada or Mexico on their initial ventures out of the country but – as everyone knows – you can drive to those countries from the United States, so they don't really count. |

Pope names five new cardinals, all from outside Italy and the Vatican Posted: 21 May 2017 05:51 AM PDT By Philip Pullella VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis is to elevate five Roman Catholic prelates from outside Italy and the Vatican to the rank of cardinal, the elite group of churchmen who are his closest advisers and can enter a conclave to choose his successor. The pope, making the surprise announcement during his weekly Sunday address, said the men came from Mali, Spain, Sweden, Laos and El Salvador. The fact that none of the five are Italian and none hold Vatican positions underscores Francis' conviction that the Church is a global institution that should become increasingly less Italian-centric. |

Apple claims exploding Beats headphones ‘not our fault’ Posted: 19 May 2017 07:02 PM PDT Exploding electronics are a, uh, hot topic lately. Between the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 recall and an epidemic of exploding hoverboards, people are more aware than ever that things with batteries go up in flames occasionally. So for Apple, being associated with any fire is a bad thing. In the case of a woman whose Beats heaphones exploded on a plane, Apple is going to pains to point out that it's not Apple's fault.
As the Australian Associated Press reports, a woman from Adelaide was on a flight from Beijing to Melbourne earlier this year when her Beats headphones exploded. She was napping on the flight, but was awoken "by the sound of an explosion and a burning sensation on her face." That model of Beats headphones reportedly used AAA battery cells, which are not supplied with the headphones. Apple claims that its investigation shows the third-party batteries were at fault, but the woman who was burned alleges that since there were no instructions on what brand of battery to use, Apple should bear some responsibility. "The headphones don't work without batteries, yet nowhere on the headphones - or their packaging - did it specify which brand of batteries should be used," she told the AP. With no more information, it's difficult to second-guess Apple's position here. But more important than apportioning blame for this specific incident is how hard Apple appears to be pushing back. In this kind of situation, it's more common for a company to express regret, and maybe come to some kind of quiet settlement. But with exploding batteries such a big deal these days, Apple doesn't even want the appearance of a mistake. |

Israeli minister expresses concern over U.S.-Saudi arms deal Posted: 21 May 2017 11:43 AM PDT Israel expressed muted concern on Sunday to a major arms deal between the United States and Saudi Arabia announced a day earlier during the visit to the region by U.S. President Donald Trump. The central achievement of Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia was nearly $110 billion in deals sealed on Saturday in which Riyadh will buy U.S. arms to help it counter Iran, with options running as high as $350 billion over 10 years. Although Israel also sees Iran as a threat to its security, it has a military advantage over the Arab states and has always been concerned about arms sales to them that could possibly narrow the margin separating them. |

Assange stepped into the daylight on the balcony of Ecuador's London embassy, where he has been holed up since 2012, to celebrate, but said the road was "far from over". Leaked iPhone 8 mold suggests device will be slightly larger than the iPhone 7 Posted: 20 May 2017 12:42 PM PDT Apple's 2017 iPhone lineup is poised to be the company's most interesting and ambitious yet. By the time September rolls around, it's widely believed Apple will release three brand new iPhone models: an iPhone 7s, an iPhone 7s Plus, and last but not least, the highly anticipated iPhone 8.
While the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus will sport the same form factor as the iPhone 7, the iPhone 8 will introduce a completely new design, complete with an advanced edge-to-edge 5.8-inch OLED display that will essentially take up the entire front end of the device. In fact, reports from the rumor mill suggest that the bezels surrounding the iPhone 8 display will only be about 4mm all around, a tidbit seemingly confirmed by our exclusive look at an iPhone 8 dummy model earlier this week. With June right around the corner and the finalized iPhone 8 design likely locked down at this point, there's a good chance that the number of leaked iPhone 8 moldings and schematics will rise significantly in the weeks and months ahead of the iPhone 8 release. To this point, Slashleaks today points us to a new series of photos -- originally sourced via Weibo -- which show us three different iPhone molds corresponding to the three new iPhone models Apple will release later this year. While the photo above doesn't shed a whole lot of new light on Apple's 2017 iPhone lineup, it does suggest that the iPhone 8 may be slightly taller than the iPhone 7s. While previous reports claimed that the iPhone 8 will pack a display the size of an iPhone 7 Plus into the form factor of an iPhone 7, the iPhone 8 may actually be slightly larger if we assume that the molds above were all aligned uniformly. Another point worth noting is that the camera module on the iPhone 8 is oriented vertically, a design which echoes a number of leaked schematics and designs we've seen over the past few months. It's widely believed that the vertical orientation of the iPhone 8's camera module has to do with the rumored augmented reality features Apple is planning to show off later this year. With the iPhone 8 design said to feature one giant piece of glass, it's widely believed that Apple will incorporate the Touch ID sensor into the display itself. Though some previous leaks have featured a cut-out for a Touch ID sensor on the back, it's believed that the final iPhone 8 design will be far more elegant and user-friendly. Now as for when we can expect to see the iPhone 8 finally hit store shelves, the good news is that we won't have to wait longer than usual. Despite an onslaught of rumors claiming that the iPhone 8 release date might be pushed back by 4-8 weeks, more recent reports from credible sources indicate that the iPhone 8 release, like most other iPhone releases, will go down in September. Price wise, it's no surprise that Apple plans to charge a premium for the iPhone 8, with the entry-level 128GB model said to retail for $1000 and the more storage-friendly 256GB model said to retail for $1,099. |
