Malala to return to Pakistan after finishing her studies in Britain Posted: 30 Mar 2018 11:02 AM PDT Malala Yousafzai, the women's education activist and youngest ever Nobel Prize Winner, said yesterday that she plans to return permanently to Pakistan after finishing her studies in Britain. Ms Yousafzai, who is known across the world simply as 'Malala', was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in 2012 while she was campaigning for female education in the Swat Valley. In her first visit to the country since the attack, she yesterday told Pakistani media that she plans to return to the country in two years - after finishing her course in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University. "My plan is to return to Pakistan as this is my country," she said. "The Pakistani government and military have helped me in visiting my home country. I will return to Pakistan permanently after completing my education." She described herself as "completely focusing on education" at Oxford, but said that she wanted "to work for the education of children and make it possible for every girl in Pakistan to receive a high-level education, to fulfil her dreams and become a part of society". It was there, in 2012, that a Taliban gunman singled her out on the bus she rode to school, and shot her in the head. Yesterday Ms Yousafzai, now 20, acknowledged the work of the Pakistani military in saving her life. "My treatment here was by Army doctors, and if they had not done my surgery in time I would not be here today," she said. After leaving Pakistan, she founded her own not-for-profit educational fund, the Malala Fund. She continued to write and campaign, and in 2013 co-authored her biography, I Am Malala. In 2014, she became the youngest-ever recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize Sources close to Ms Yousafzai's family yesterday told The Daily Telegraph that she had discussed with them her plans to move back to Pakistan, but had not yet decided what she would do upon her return. She told the media that she had missed "everything about Pakistan" while she had been studying in Britain. "Right from the rivers, the mountains, to even the dirty streets and the garbage around our house, and my friends and how we used to have gossip and talk about our school life, to how we used to fight with our neighbours," she said. A student who also attends Ms Yousafzai's Oxford college, Lady Margaret Hall, said yesterday that while studying she had plain clothes security detail with her at all times. Before beginning her degree at Oxford, she studied at Edgbaston High School for Girls in Birmingham. While many in Pakistan welcomed her return, others were more critical of her reforming stance and accused her of promoting her own, non-Islamic, values. A group of private schools in Pakistan declared Friday to be "I Am Not Malala Day", for what its spokesman described as her "anti-Islam and anti-Pakistan ideology". Responding to her critics, she said: "I am proud of my religion, and I am proud of my country." "I just don't know anything I've said that makes me anti-Pakistan or anti-Islam." |

Trump supporter Malloch says he will testify to Mueller grand jury Posted: 30 Mar 2018 04:50 PM PDT By Mark Hosenball WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An American academic who supports U.S. President Donald Trump and is a strong advocate of Britain's exit from the European Union will testify next month before the federal grand jury considering evidence in the investigation into possible collusion between Trump's 2016 election campaign and Russia. Theodore Malloch, the author of a forthcoming pro-Trump book and an ally of Nigel Farage, a former leader of Britain's UK Independence Party, said in a statement emailed to Reuters on Friday by the book's publisher that he was questioned by FBI agents when he landed at Boston's Logan International Airport on Tuesday after a flight from London and served with a subpoena to appear before the grand jury. |

China space lab may fall to Earth later: European Space Agency Posted: 30 Mar 2018 05:55 PM PDT China's defunct space lab could hurtle back to Earth later than previously forecast, with the European Space Agency saying it may re-enter the atmosphere as late as Monday morning GMT. Chinese authorities have said the roughly eight-tonne Tiangong-1 is unlikely to cause any damage when it comes down and that its fiery disintegration will offer a "splendid" show akin to a meteor shower. The abandoned craft is expected to make its plunge between the afternoon of Sunday and early Monday morning GMT, the ESA said in a blog post announcing its revised forecast. |

Syria rebel group upbeat on Douma talks but denies deal Posted: 30 Mar 2018 06:29 AM PDT BEIRUT/MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Syrian rebel group said on Friday that U.N.-mediated talks with Russia were "heading in the right direction" but denied it had agreed to evacuate the last insurgent-held enclave in eastern Ghouta. The town of Douma, controlled by the Jaish al-Islam rebel group, is the last patch of eastern Ghouta still held by insurgents who have been routed in a ferocious offensive by the Russian-backed Syrian military that began in February. Its recovery would seal a major victory for President Bashar al-Assad, crushing the last big rebel stronghold near Damascus seven years into a conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions. |
America Must Drop Its Delusions about Dealing with Russia Posted: 30 Mar 2018 09:27 AM PDT For too long, the U.S. national-security community has oscillated in its assessment of the Russian Federation, swinging between viewing Moscow as the country's number one geopolitical threat to dismissing the challenge of a nation whose per capita GDP equals that of Portugal. This has led to the worst of all satisficing comprises: an approach that views Russia as a competitor and adversary, but which does not require a great deal of investment, because the unstoppable Russian threat of today will evaporate when Russia inevitably collapses under the weight of its economic, political and demographic contradictions. |

Grief and rage at funeral for police shooting victim in Sacramento Posted: 29 Mar 2018 06:54 PM PDT Hundreds of mourners joined an outpouring of grief and rage Thursday at the funeral of an unarmed black man shot dead by police in California's capital Sacramento. The service, where civil rights activist Al Sharpton delivered an angry, rousing speech, became a rallying point for people demanding justice in the face of police violence against African Americans. Body camera and surveillance helicopter footage released last week showed police chasing and then firing 20 rounds at 22-year-old Stephon Clark, fearing that he was carrying a weapon. |

Turkey says France could become 'target' for backing Syria Kurds Posted: 30 Mar 2018 04:26 PM PDT By Tuvan Gumrukcu ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey said on Friday that a French pledge to help stabilize a region of northern Syria controlled by Kurdish-dominated forces amounted to support for terrorism and could make France a "target of Turkey". French backing for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), spearheaded by the Kurdish YPG militia, has angered Ankara at a time when it is fighting the YPG in northern Syria and considers it a terrorist organization. President Tayyip Erdogan said France had taken a "completely wrong approach" on Syria, adding that he exchanged heated words with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, last week. |

Britain said it conducts routine checks on aircraft to protect the UK from organised crime and people attempting to bring harmful substances into the country. The Russian embassy in London said Friday's search on a scheduled plane arriving from Moscow at London Heathrow Airport was "extraordinary". |
