Texas sanctuary city law could lead to immigration police state: lawyer Posted: 26 Jun 2017 04:18 PM PDT A small border town and some of the largest cities in Texas told a federal judge on Monday a new state law aimed at punishing sanctuary cities could lead to an immigration police state and asked him to halt it because it was unconstitutional. The Republican-backed law in Texas, the U.S. state with the longest border with Mexico, takes effect on September 1. It is the first of its kind since Republican Donald Trump became president in January, promising to crack down on illegal immigration. |

Ed Gillespie is not interested in the latest Trump tweets Posted: 25 Jun 2017 02:00 AM PDT Ed Gillespie has a tricky road ahead of him as he campaigns for Virginia governor this year. The Republican nominee wants to talk about state issues, not President Trump, not Russia and certainly not what's on Twitter. The latest sign is that former President Obama has already decided to campaign for the Democratic nominee, Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam. |

Cook met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a business summit in Washington at a time when Apple Inc is targeting the nascent Indian market as a revenue source after its sales in China slipped. Apple has asked Indian government officials for a range of tax and policy changes to help build out its iPhone assembly work in the country. |

Greenland now a major driver of rising seas: study Posted: 26 Jun 2017 10:37 AM PDT Ocean levels rose 50 percent faster in 2014 than in 1993, with meltwater from the Greenland ice sheet now supplying 25 percent of total sea level increase compared with just five percent 20 years earlier, researchers reported Monday. "This result is important because the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)" -- the UN science advisory body -- "makes a very conservative projection of total sea level rise by the end of the century," at 60 to 90 centimetres (24 to 35 inches), said Peter Wadhams, a professor of ocean physics at the University of Oxford who did not take part in the research. Greenland alone contains enough frozen water to lift oceans by about seven metres (23 feet), though experts disagree on the global warming threshold for irreversible melting, and how long that would take once set in motion. |

Ninety-nine people were rescued, Margarita Moncada, the head of disaster relief for Antioquia province, told journalists. |

Nigeria's ill president sends recorded greetings from London Posted: 26 Jun 2017 10:36 AM PDT Nigeria's ailing President Muhammadu Buhari marked the end of Ramadan with an audio broadcast to the nation, his first public message since heading to London on medical leave nearly two months ago, the president's office said. The recording attributed to the president was played on Nigerian radio channels over the weekend and featured a tired hesitant voice that appeared to be his, speaking in the Hausa language used in the Muslim-majority north, where Buhari is from. Some Nigerians questioned the use of Hausa for Buhari's first message since departing for London on May 7, accusing him of addressing only his kinsmen rather than the nation as a whole. |

Anger at Texas' strict new immigration law simmered as a thousand Latino policymakers and advocates gathered in Dallas this weekend, ahead of a hearing in which civil rights groups will ask for the measure to be blocked. |
Elon Musk packs the best of SpaceX's latest landing in 20-second video Posted: 25 Jun 2017 05:01 PM PDT While you were out enjoying the sun and sights here on Earth, SpaceX was busy making history, again. SEE ALSO: Elon Musk wants your trip to Mars to be like a Carnival cruise On Sunday, SpaceX pulled off its 13th flawless rocket landing, delicately putting the Falcon 9 on the seaborne drone ship called "Just Read the Instructions." And while SpaceX founder Elon Musk knows that every space nerd on the planet was watching in real time, he's also aware of the power of social media. To that end, Musk posted a high-speed version of the space-to-Earth landing on Instagram. Sped up version of today's rocket landing on the Droneship Just Read the Instructions (guess it did) A post shared by Elon Musk (@elonmusk) on Jun 25, 2017 at 2:41pm PDT "Sped up version of today's rocket landing on the Droneship Just Read the Instructions (guess it did)," wrote Musk, on Twitter and Instagram. The successful launch and landing allowed SpaceX to deploy one of a series of low-Earth orbit satellites from voice and data communications company Iridium. This was the second launch and landing in 48 hours for SpaceX, adding more real world proof to Musk's dream of making space travel as common and frequent as airplane flights. Rowling on Monday marked the "wonderful" two decades since her Harry Potter creation first hit the shelves, starting a global literary phenomenon which has inspired a generation. Joanne Kathleen Rowling had struggled through poverty before winning a £1,500 publishing deal with Bloomsbury to print 1,000 copies of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". "Harry Potter has had a huge impact on a generation of children, who became so obsessed with reading that they would queue for hours to get their hands on the next book," said Diana Gerald, head of the Book Trust, a charity which encourages youngsters to read. |

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt imposed a boycott on Qatar three weeks ago, accusing it of backing militants - then issued an ultimatum, including demands that it shut down a Turkish military base in Doha. |

Assaults backed by air and artillery bombardment had stopped at the start of Islamic prayers at 6am but gunfire broke out as soon as the truce ended around 2pm, AFP reporters in Marawi said. Regional military commander Lieutenant General Carlito Galvez said the truce also allowed five Muslim religious leaders to enter ground zero and negotiate with the militants to release civilian hostages, especially children, women and the elderly. |

Ford testing plug-in hybrid Escape Posted: 26 Jun 2017 02:25 AM PDT The possibility of a plug-in hybrid version of the Ford Escape dates back as far as 2009 when Ford actually took a prototype to the Detroit Auto Show, and a small batch of them were handed over to a California utility to be tried out. It now seems as though a plug-in hybrid variant of the current model could finally be arriving in showrooms for sale to the public, and it could possibly be unveiled as soon as next year. Although Ford has confirmed it's currently testing a new Escape PHEV prototype, no details have yet been released regarding the expected range, how it's likely to perform, or how much it will eventually cost to buy. |

Asylum seekers in Canada who fled Trump now trapped in legal limbo Posted: 26 Jun 2017 04:59 AM PDT By Anna Mehler Paperny and Rod Nickel TORONTO/WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - Thousands of people who fled to Canada to escape President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal migrants have become trapped in legal limbo because of an overburdened refugee system, struggling to find work, permanent housing or enroll their children in schools. Refugee claims are taking longer to be completed than at any time in the past five years, according to previously unpublished Immigration and Refugee Board data provided to Reuters. Those wait times are set to grow longer after the IRB in April allocated "up to half" of its 127 tribunal members to focus on old cases. The number of delayed hearings more than doubled from 2015 to 2016 and is on track to increase again this year. |
