Girl scout among 34 dead found in Indonesian quake quagmire Posted: 06 Oct 2018 05:13 AM PDT President Joko Widodo has said all of the victims of the 7.5 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that struck on Sept. 28 must be found. Most of the dead have been found in the region's main urban center, the small city of Palu. No one knows how many people were dragged to their deaths when the quake triggered soil liquefaction, a phenomenon that turns the ground into a roiling quagmire. |

Netanyahu undergoes new graft questioning Posted: 05 Oct 2018 06:36 AM PDT Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underwent a new round of questioning on Friday over one of several graft cases that have threatened to topple him, Israeli media reported. The veteran premier's 12th round of questioning as a suspect in various cases comes two days before his wife Sara appears in court on charges of misusing state funds for catering at their official residence. Netanyahu has not been charged in any of the cases and a spokesman on Friday reasserted the prime minister's innocence. |

Brett Kavanaugh confirmed: Donald Trump says ‘women outraged’ over Supreme Court pick’s treatment Posted: 06 Oct 2018 03:53 PM PDT Donald Trump has said "women were outraged" at the way his Supreme Court pick was treated during the confirmation process, after senator's approved Brett Kavanaugh's appointment. Mr Trump, speaking to journalists while aboard Air Force One on his way to a political rally in Kansas, also said he was "100 per cent certain" Christine Blasey Ford "named the wrong person" as her alleged assaulter. It was a counterpoint to what Dr Ford said herself during her testimony last month, that she was "100 per cent" certain Mr Kavanaugh was the person in question. |
South Korea jails former president Lee for 15 years on corruption charges Posted: 04 Oct 2018 11:45 PM PDT A Seoul court on Friday jailed former South Korean President Lee Myung-bak for 15 years for corruption, making him the latest in a string of high-profile political and business leaders ensnared by graft charges. Lee, in office from 2008 to 2013, is the fourth former South Korean president to be jailed, with his successor Park Geun-hye imprisoned for her role in a separate corruption scandal that toppled her from power in early 2017 and also led to jail time for Samsung Group heir Jay Y. Lee. |
Pope OKs study of Vatican archives into McCarrick scandal Posted: 06 Oct 2018 12:55 PM PDT VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has authorized a "thorough study" of Vatican archives into how a prominent American cardinal advanced through church ranks despite allegations that he slept with seminarians and young priests, the Vatican said Saturday in its first response to explosive allegations of a cover-up that is roiling the papacy. |

Google shows progress in addressing competition concerns, says EU's Vestager Posted: 05 Oct 2018 10:28 AM PDT Google's proposals to increase competition in online shopping are bearing fruit, Europe's antitrust chief said on Friday, suggesting that the company may be able to avoid further fines. Alphabet Inc's Google last year offered to allow price-comparison rivals to bid for advertising space at the top of a search page, giving them the chance to compete on equal terms, seeking to appease regulators after the European Commission fined it a record 2.4 billion euros ($2.8 billion) for favouring its own service. European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said she saw further improvement since Google's first report in June showed some rivals had benefited from the company's action. |

China hits back after Mike Pence claims Beijing wants to kick Trump out of White House Posted: 04 Oct 2018 05:53 PM PDT China rejected Mike Pence's charge that Beijing was meddling in American elections as "unwarranted" and "ridiculous". The US vice-president accused China of orchestrating a military, economic and political campaign to undermine Donald Trump's administration and bolster Chinese influence in America and worldwide. "China has initiated an unprecedented effort to influence American public opinion, the 2018 [midterm congressional] elections, and the environment leading into the 2020 presidential elections," Mr Pence said on Thursday. "To put it bluntly, President Trump's leadership is working, and China wants a different American president." The comments, made during a highly anticipated speech in Washington, came after Mr Trump used his platform at the United Nations General Assembly last week to allege that China was trying to interfere in November's midterm elections. Neither the president nor his deputy have provided hard evidence of meddling. Hua Chunying, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman, said on Friday that Mr Pence had "slandered" China. "This is nothing but speaking on hearsay evidence, confusing right and wrong and creating something out of thin air. The Chinese side is firmly opposed to it," she said. "It is very ridiculous for the US side to stigmatise its normal exchanges and cooperation with China as China interfering in its internal affairs and elections," Hua said. Jeremy Warner on Trump-China trade war Mr Pence's accusations aggravated an already delicate bilateral relationship given an escalating trade war, and were embarrassing to China coming as it does during the country's week-long celebrations of its founding. The harsh words also follow an incident on Sunday when a Chinese vessel came within 45 yards of a US destroyer conducting freedom-of-navigation operations in the South China Sea, forcing the US ship to quickly change course to avoid a collision. Mr Pence called the confrontation "reckless harassment". "The United States Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows and our national interests demand," he said. Over half an hour, Mr Pence condemned China's growing control at home and abroad, citing examples of religious oppression, human rights abuses, visa delays and denials for scholars, and even intimidation campaigns against Chinese students in the US. He said Beijing used rewards and coercion to influence universities, movie studios, think tanks, journalists and government officials. He also alleged that China threatened to deny a business license to a top US company if it refused to speak against the Trump administration. The raft of allegations levelled at China have raised questions as to whether Mr Trump and his aides are trying to deflect attention from an investigation of his campaign's possible ties to alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and also set up China for the blame if Republicans do poorly in November's election. |
JBS sued by Kentucky woman over ground beef in salmonella recall Posted: 05 Oct 2018 04:12 PM PDT The lawsuit comes one day after the U.S. Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that JBS Tolleson Inc was voluntarily pulling 6.5 million pounds of ground beef and other raw beef products that had been shipped to stores across the country. JBS Tolleson is part of JBS USA, the U.S. arm of the world's largest meatpacking company. The meat had been processed through JBS' Arizona plant, the USDA said. |

Nadia Murad: from jihadist slave to Nobel laureate Posted: 05 Oct 2018 02:54 AM PDT Nadia Murad survived the worst cruelties inflicted on her people, the Yazidis of Iraq, before becoming a global champion of their cause and winning the Nobel Peace Prize. On Friday, Murad and Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege were jointly awarded the prize for their "efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war," Nobel committee chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen said in unveiling the winners in Oslo. The 25-year-old Murad, her thin, pale face framed by her long brown hair, becomes the first Iraqi to win the Nobel Peace Prize. |

French police probe Interpol chief's disappearance on China trip Posted: 06 Oct 2018 07:16 AM PDT Meng's wife contacted police in Lyon, the French city where the international police agency is based, after not hearing from him since Sept. 25, and after receiving threats by phone and on social media, France's interior ministry said. A person familiar with the investigation said the initial working assumption was that Meng had antagonized Chinese authorities in some way and had been detained as a result. "France is puzzled about the situation of Interpol's president and concerned about the threats made to his wife," the ministry said, adding that it was in contact with China. |
Social media contributed to my stroke, says Norman Lamb Posted: 05 Oct 2018 02:06 PM PDT A former health minister has said that "addictive" social media contributed to his stroke, as he warned that websites such as Twitter and Facebook could have a "distorting" effect. Norman Lamb, the Lib Dem MP, suffered a minor stroke in March that was at the time attributed to his high workload. He told The Daily Telegraph that his overuse of technology and social media was one of the causes. "I have addictive tendencies," he said. "I use social media late at night, sometimes lying in bed. It's the first thing I look at in the morning. Twitter is very addictive." Mr Lamb, 61, the MP for North Norfolk and chairman of the Commons science and technology committee that is conducting an inquiry into the effects of social media on young people, served as health minister until 2015. He said technology had increased the "pressure" on MPs, who received "instant feedback" and a "stream of tweets" after public appearances. "You get constituency case work via Facebook, Twitter, Messenger, text messages, emails, phone calls, people turning up at the office," Mr Lamb said. "There's an assumption you'll respond to an email quickly. When you leave it for a few days, there's a pressure of 'Why have you not responded?' "When I had a health shock before Easter, when I discovered I'd had a stroke, I realised I was on a treadmill. I was just struggling to keep on top of it. So I immediately said, 'Someone else can manage my email account'." Mr Lamb's committee's inquiry has heard evidence from young people who spend "all the time on social media". He is sympathetic. "Most people are capable of this drift into obsession," he said. "It's commonplace for teenagers to message each other at two in the morning... You never escape it." Mr Lamb spoke in support of The Daily Telegraph campaign calling for social media companies to have a duty of care towards their users. He said: "These are very powerful organisations making a lot of money, and they have a real moral obligation to safeguard the health and well-being of these generations growing up." However, he urged caution when it comes to regulation. "We mustn't throw the baby out with the bath water – we must be smart and intelligent in how we do this, and work from the basis of evidence," he said. Read more | Social media addiction Mr Lamb also highlighted the positive aspects of social media, which were not available when his son, Archie, was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder in his teens. "The fact that young people can access help, support, guidance on mental health issues and on how you navigate your way through challenges can be of enormous value," Mr Lamb said. "Archie is now thriving and successful in the music business but I remember the moment he was diagnosed with OCD and said 'Dad, why am I the only person going mad?'" "Since nobody else is talking about it, you think you're the only one who is experiencing this. Now, you can go to your room and type in 'OCD', and you realise that actually lots of people are." |

Cambodia to raise minimum wage for garment workers by $12 Posted: 05 Oct 2018 09:12 AM PDT Cambodia hiked the monthly minimum wage for garment workers by $12 Friday from the current $170 following a election promise by premier Hun Sen. The country's $7 billion apparel industry is fuelled by more than 740,000 garment workers, who strongman Hun Sen attempted to woo before July's widely-criticised elections. Union representatives stopped short of welcoming the wage increase, which they say is not enough to address rising inflation and living expenses. |
Car blast kills four in Turkey-backed Syrian town: reports Posted: 06 Oct 2018 02:44 PM PDT A car blast in a town controlled by Turkish-backed Syrian rebel groups near the Turkish border killed at least four people on Saturday, a war monitor and local media reports said. The town of Azaz lies in a part of northern Syria that Turkey's army helped rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad to capture in 2016. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said the explosion happened in an industrial area of Azaz. |

First SpaceX mission with Nasa astronauts set for June 2019 Posted: 05 Oct 2018 03:39 PM PDT Nasa has announced the first crewed flight by a SpaceX rocket to the International Space Station (ISS) is expected to take place in June 2019. It will be the first manned US launch to the orbiting research laboratory since the space shuttle program was retired in 2011, forcing US astronauts to hitch costly rides aboard Russian Soyuz spacecraft. A flight on Boeing spacecraft is set to follow in August 2019. The timetable for both launches has already been postponed several times, but Nasa said on Thursday it would now be providing monthly updates on deadlines. "This new process for reporting our schedule is better; nevertheless, launch dates will still have some uncertainty, and we anticipate they may change as we get closer to launch," said Phil McAlister, director of commercial spaceflight development at Nasa headquarters. "These are new spacecraft, and the engineering teams have a lot of work to do before the systems will be ready to fly." In the long term, Nasa will use SpaceX and Boeing to take astronauts to the ISS for regular missions, which last about six months. SpaceX will carry out an uncrewed test in January 2019, and Boeing in March 2019. SpaceX will use its Falcon 9 rocket for its launch with a Crew Dragon capsule attached on top. Boeing's Starliner ship will be propelled into space by an Atlas V rocket made by the United Launch Alliance, a joint venture with Lockheed Martin. Nasa is depending on the success of both missions as its contract with the Russian space agency expires in November 2019. |
