Barack Obama thanks Michelle for 'sticking with him' after the White House Posted: 08 May 2017 02:19 AM PDT Barack Obama will be remembered for many things during his eight years as President and this will include injecting a newfangled dose of modern humour into the White House. From his quip-bursting White House Correspondents Dinner speeches to his mimicking of viral memes while navigating the late night TV circuit, the former President's wit was a defining feature of his tenure. Now in typical Obama fashion, the Chicago native has jokingly thanked Michelle Obama for sticking with him now they have left the White House. |
Apple is now worth $800 billion for the first time ever Posted: 08 May 2017 11:14 AM PDT Freshman economics students will tell you that something is only "worth" whatever other people are willing to pay for it. In the case of Apple Inc, that means the company is now valued at $800 billion, a new all-time high for the company. But according to analysts, Apple could be on track to break $1 trillion if it plays its cards right.
Apple's stock briefly surpassed $153.44 per share today. With Apple's 5.214 billion shares on the market, that means the company's market cap is greater than $800 billion. The new high comes just weeks after Apple blew through $750 billion, a milestone at the time. Anticipation surrounding Apple is reaching a frenzy currently, as a mix of factors are pushing investors ever higher. The iPhone 8, widely expected to launch late this year or early 2018, is predicted to start a "super-cycle" of upgrading, which will make Apple a brand-new wave of profit. Wider economic factors unrelated to the product lineup are also in Apple's favor. Apple has some $250 billion in cash, mostly held overseas, which it doesn't return to the US thanks to the 35% tax that would impose. President Trump, however, has hinted at the possibility of a one-time tax break to encourage companies to bring their cash back to the US. A break, expected to be around 10%, would enable Apple to return cash to the US, and use it to either invest, or return to shareholders. Either scenario would be favorable for investors, hence the excitement. Finally, a general rally in the US stock market is also playing in Apple's favor. The NASDAQ 100 closed at an all-time high last week. Despite the optimism, there's still some notes for concern. Apple's $250 billion in overseas cash is tempered by over $100 billion in debt that it has in the US. Since it can't use any of its overseas cash, it has been using debt to conduct its share buyback program, invest in new technologies, and issue dividends. |

Spicer calls Sally Yates a ‘political opponent of the president’ Posted: 09 May 2017 12:58 PM PDT During Tuesday's daily briefing, press secretary Sean Spicer explained that the White House did not act immediately on Sally Yates' warning about Gen. Michael Flynn because they didn't want to "jump the gun and go take an action" based on concerns raised by a person considered a "political opponent of the president." |

US sees sharp fall in illegal immigration from Mexico: officials Posted: 09 May 2017 11:24 AM PDT Illegal immigration across the US-Mexico border fell for the fifth straight month in April as the Trump administration's crackdown takes root, the Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday. In the first three full months since President Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, just over 42,000 were detained, compared to nearly 133,000 a year ago. DHS spokesman David Lapan credited tougher surveillance and enforcement by the US Customs and Border Protection agency, but said they anticipate a possible uptick in coming months after the winter. |
British PM May's Conservatives open up record lead: ICM poll Posted: 08 May 2017 07:24 AM PDT British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party has opened up the biggest lead on record for polls conducted by research firm ICM, suggesting it remains on course for a sweeping win in a national election in a month's time. An ICM poll published on Monday, which was conducted immediately after the Conservatives scored big wins in local elections last week, gave May's party a 22-point lead over the opposition Labour Party ahead of the June 8 national election. |
Car bomb hits Thailand's troubled south, injures 40 Posted: 09 May 2017 03:36 AM PDT At least 40 people were wounded Tuesday when a car bomb exploded outside a supermarket in Thailand's insurgency-plagued south, police said, the largest attack for months on a civilian target in the troubled zone. The latest attack hit the town of Pattani around 2pm (0700 GMT), with two bombs going off outside the Big C, a busy supermarket near the town centre. "The second blast was a car bomb," Pattani police commander Major General Thanongsak Wangsupa told AFP. |

Deer caught eating human remains for first time, say scientists Posted: 08 May 2017 11:45 PM PDT Scientists have discovered the first instance of a deer which eats human remains. The animal was caught mid-feast by a motion-sensitive camera at the Forensic Anthropology Research Facility at Texas State University, a 26-acre area where forensic scientists study how human bodies decompose in the wild. Deer are mostly herbivores, although they have been known to scavenge small mammals or birds and occasionally eat other meats. |

Texas governor signs into law bill to punish 'sanctuary cities' Posted: 08 May 2017 02:20 PM PDT By Jon Herskovitz AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed into law on Sunday a measure to punish "sanctuary cities," despite a plea from police chiefs of the state's biggest cities to halt the bill they said would hinder their ability to fight crime. The Texas measure comes as Republican U.S. President Donald Trump has made combating illegal immigration a priority. Texas, which has an estimated 1.5 million illegal immigrants and the longest border with Mexico of any U.S. state, has been at the forefront of the immigration debate. |
Iran's Rouhani says election rivals are 'violent extremists' Posted: 07 May 2017 05:52 PM PDT Iran's President Hassan Rouhani launched a scathing attack on his conservative election rivals on Monday, saying their era of "violence and extremism" was over. "The people of Iran shall once again announce that they don't approve of those who only called for executions and jail throughout the last 38 years," he told a packed stadium in the western city of Hamedan, referring to the Islamic revolution of 1979. Rouhani faces a tough battle for re-election on May 19 as conservative opponents attack his failure to revive Iran's stagnant economy. |

10 Ways to Maximize Square Footage in Small Rooms Posted: 09 May 2017 08:14 AM PDT Unfortunately, the more square footage one possesses, the higher the cost. There is a reason some homeowners and renters are turning toward the tiny house movement, or downsizing to live in a simpler, more efficient space. Today's homeowners are looking for an environmentally friendly space, with less financial burden and more freedom to travel, rather than being a tied to constant property maintenance (cleaning, organizing, landscaping, repairs). |

Philippines, US launch scaled-down military exercises Posted: 08 May 2017 02:04 AM PDT The Philippines and the United States launched annual military exercises on Monday but the longtime allies scaled them down in line with President Rodrigo Duterte's pivot to China and Russia. Duterte in his 10 months in office has sought to weaken ties with the United States -- the Philippines' mutual defence treaty partner and former colonial ruler -- saying its role as a global superpower is diminishing. The 12-day "Balikatan" war games that began on Monday will involve fewer than half the number of soldiers than in 2015 during the term of Duterte's pro-American predecessor Benigno Aquino. |
North Korea's detention of U.S. citizen 'concerning': White House Posted: 08 May 2017 04:04 PM PDT The latest detention of a U.S. citizen by North Korea, which raises the number of Americans in their custody to four, is "concerning," a White House spokesman said, amid heightened tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs. Kim Hak Song, who worked for the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, was detained on Saturday on suspicion of "hostile acts" against the state, North Korea's official KCNA news agency said. Four U.S. citizens are currently being held in North Korea, a country with which the United States has no diplomatic relations and has technically remained at war with since the 1950-53 Korean conflict. |

The iPhone 8 design everybody hates is back Posted: 08 May 2017 07:02 AM PDT There are two kinds of iPhone 8 design leaks out in the wild right now, and they're fairly similar except for one critical feature: the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. A new report indicates that Apple may be forced to go with the safer approach, which unfortunately just so happens to be the one that everybody hates. Apple wants to integrate the Touch ID sensor within the layers of the new OLED screen, various reports have said, but the nascent technology may not be ready in time for this year's flagship iPhone 8. Hong Kong-based equity research firm CLSA wrote in a note to investors seen by MacRumors that Apple may end up placing the sensor on the back of the handset instead. "iPhone to ditch fingerprint sensor? We don't think so," CLSA analysts Sebastian Hou and Brian Chen wrote. "Both Samsung and Apple tried to enable in-display fingerprint sensing on full-screen OLED phones in 2017, but their optical tech seems immature and the major iPhone 8 bottleneck." The note continued, "Some thus speculate the fingerprint sensor will be removed and replaced by 3D sensing. Our latest supply chain checks indicate the iPhone 8 will still have the sensor given security, user-friendliness, and a need for payments infrastructure, but there is a high chance it will be on the back like Samsung's Galaxy S8." CLSA went ahead and created a diagram of the iPhone 8, as seen above. The company believes Apple will use an all-screen design for the handset, and that it'll feature an advanced 3D face recognition system on the front as well as a vertical dual-lens camera on the back. The schematic above looks similar to some of the recent leaks that hit the web. Designer Benjamin Geskin created a concept iPhone 8 based on the image above. Here it is — and let's just hope that it's way off base, because the front of the phone is hideous at the top, not to mention the fact that it would introduce several new manufacturing hurdles: A report on Monday said the iPhone 8 will not be delayed, although it made no mention of the phone's design or the Touch ID sensor's location. |
Major bank lists Tesla as top takeover target for Apple Posted: 09 May 2017 03:00 AM PDT One could argue that Tesla is viewed as the Apple of the auto industry, even though the financial performance of each company is vastly different. Citigroup thinks so as the bank has listed Tesla along with six other firms as potential takeover targets for Apple, Reuters reports. The other firms fall into the software and entertainment industries and include names such as Netflix and Disney. |

Libya forces advance on last jihadist bastions in Benghazi Posted: 08 May 2017 06:36 AM PDT Forces loyal to Libya's military strongman Khalifa Haftar on Monday launched an offensive to oust jihadist from their last two strongholds in second city Benghazi, they said. Forces loyal to Haftar, who does not recognise a UN-backed unity government in Tripoli and backs a rival parliament, have retaken most of the coastal city since it was overrun by jihadists in 2014. Riadh Chehibi, an officer in Haftar's self-styled Libyan National Army, said the forces advanced in the central district of Al-Sabri and Souq al-Hout area near the port, where jihadists are surrounded. |
