Conservative media defends Trump's deal with the Democrats Posted: 08 Sep 2017 11:53 AM PDT Many Republicans in Congress were reeling after President Trump's unexpected deal with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to raise the national debt limit and keep the federal government funded in exchange for Hurricane Harvey relief. With his collaboration with "Chuck and Nancy," as Trump labeled them, the president snubbed the congressional GOP leadership's plans while handing Democrats leverage to push their own big agenda items, such as passing a law to grant legal status to undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as young children. |
Florida Shopper Gives Away New Generator To Help Stranger In Hour Of Irma Need Posted: 08 Sep 2017 06:16 AM PDT Ramon Santiago insisted that Pam Brekke take his machine after he saw her burst into tears at a Lowe's store in the Conway area of Orlando on Thursday, per multiple reports. With Hurricane Irma barreling toward the region, Brekke had been frantically trawling the area for a generator that she hoped would secure her father's oxygen supply should his Sanford home lose power. Thankfully, Santiago was on hand to save Brekke's day. |
Massive earthquake rocks Mexico Posted: 08 Sep 2017 04:18 AM PDT One of the most powerful earthquakes ever to strike Mexico has hit off its southern Pacific coast, killing at least 15 people, toppling houses and businesses and sending panicked people into the streets more than 650 miles (1,000 kilometers) away. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake hit off Chiapas state near the Guatemalan border with a magnitude of 8.1 — slightly stronger than the magnitude 8 quake of 1985 that killed thousands and devastated large parts of Mexico City. National civil defense chief Luis Felipe Puente told the Televisa network that at least 15 people had died, 10 of them in Oaxaca, also close to the epicenter. |

Judge opens door for lawsuit over girl declared brain dead Posted: 07 Sep 2017 05:23 PM PDT SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A California judge ruled that a teen girl who was declared brain dead more than three years ago after a tonsillectomy may technically still be alive, allowing a malpractice lawsuit against the hospital to move forward and possibly setting up the family to have her care paid for if they succeed. |
US gun makers battle 'Trump slump' as sales fall compared to 2016 Posted: 08 Sep 2017 08:51 AM PDT For one of America's largest gun manufacturers, the "Trump slump" in sales has meant a nearly $100m fall in firearms revenue compared with the same quarter last year. American Outdoor Brands, the rebranded name of historic gun company Smith & Wesson, reported a 48.5% decrease in firearms revenue compared with the same quarter last year, when many Americans believed Hillary Clinton, a supporter of gun control, would be elected president. |

"Mars has been in business for four generations and intends to be for the next four generations," said CEO Grant F. "The only way that will happen is if we do things differently to ensure that the planet is healthy and all people in our extended supply chains have the opportunity to thrive," the statement read. |

In all, seven live sandbar sharks, as well as two dead leopard sharks and one dead hammerhead shark, were found inside of the Lagrangeville property on Aug. 23. The home, roughly 75 miles north of New York City, was suspected of harboring illegal wildlife, the state's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) said. |

Canada's top marijuana producer to double production Posted: 07 Sep 2017 04:02 PM PDT By Alastair Sharp TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's biggest licensed producer of medical marijuana has bought land next to its greenhouse production site that will allow it to more than double the total volume of cannabis it can grow, its chief executive said on Thursday. Canopy Growth Corp's Tweed Farms Inc subsidiary expects to spend at least C$25 million ($21 million) to upgrade the property, a flower farm it purchased for about C$9 million in cash and equity, with work including the installation of security cameras and fences due to start in October. With Canada less than a year away from the planned legalization of marijuana for recreational use, licensed producers are rushing to try to fill an expected shortfall in supply. |

Charges have not yet been laid, but could range from arson to reckless burning. |

Rescue mission underway for rare wine collections menaced by Irma Posted: 07 Sep 2017 09:20 AM PDT Swooping in ahead of Hurricane Irma's feared weekend arrival, an emergency response team is rescuing rare treasures - some of them survivors of world wars and all of them liquid - from harm's way in Florida and Louisiana. Wine collections worth millions of dollars are being stashed out of reach of the Category 5 hurricane, moved from homes to local bunker-like storage units or shuttled to temperature-controlled warehouses as far away as New Jersey. Many are owned by philanthropists aging the wine to perfection before donating it to a charity auction, often to raise disaster relief funds, said Adam Gungle, chief executive officer of Xpeditr, a high-end wine transporter based in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and Toronto. |

Warm Antarctic caves harbour secret life: scientists Posted: 07 Sep 2017 10:16 PM PDT A secret world of animals and plants -- including unknown species -- may live in warm caves under Antarctica's glaciers, scientists said Friday. The caves, hollowed out by steam from active volcanoes, are light and could reach temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit), researchers said, raising the possibility of a whole ecosystem of flora and fauna deep beneath the frozen surface. A study led by the Australian National University around Mount Erebus, an active volcano on Ross Island in Antarctica, showed extensive cave systems. |

Saudi Arabia suspends any dialogue with Qatar: SPA Posted: 08 Sep 2017 04:49 PM PDT Saudi Arabia on Saturday suspended any dialogue with Qatar, accusing it of "distorting facts", just after a report of a phone call between the leaders of both countries suggested a breakthrough in the Gulf dispute. Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke by the telephone with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Friday when they discussed the Gulf dispute, state media from both countries reported earlier. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain cut diplomatic and trade links with Qatar on June 5, suspending air and shipping routes with the world's biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas, which is home to the region's biggest U.S. military base. |

9/11: Then and now - 16 years later Posted: 08 Sep 2017 02:00 AM PDT Yahoo News photographer Gordon Donovan recently returned to the scenes of many memorable images taken in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. Donovan photographed the same areas to show what has changed since the terrorist attacks 16 years ago. New obstacles have arisen, requiring some adjustments in camera angles to align with the original images. This is the sixth time Donovan has revisited the New York skyline; each year presents new challenges as the New York City landscape changes.
