Man sues to stop New Orleans from removing Confederate statue Posted: 08 May 2017 11:41 AM PDT The lawsuit, filed by Richard Marksbury in Orleans Parish Civil District Court, says the city cannot legally take down the statue of Confederate States Army General P.G.T. Beauregard because it does not own the memorial or the land it's on. "If that monument is removed, then they (the city) would open themselves up to some legal action," said Marksbury, who is a member of the Monumental Task Committee, a volunteer group that works to preserve monuments in New Orleans. Marksbury's lawsuit is the latest legal challenge to the city's decision in 2015 to remove Beauregard's statue and three other monuments honoring leaders of the Confederacy during the U.S. Civil War. |

Posted: 08 May 2017 01:40 AM PDT A organisation of atheists from Wisconsin has filed a lawsuit challenging the president's so-called "religious liberty" order, claiming his move to allow religious groups to preach politics from the pulpit is in breach of the constitution. The Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF), established in 1978, said recent comments by Mr Trump were a clear attempt to roll-back the provisions of the Johnson Amendment, a 1954 law that prohibits all tax-exempt institutions from campaigning for political candidates. Religious liberty is enshrined in the First Amendment of our Constitution as a founding principle of our nation. |

Nigeria exchanges 82 Chibok girls kidnapped by Boko Haram for prisoners Posted: 07 May 2017 01:23 AM PDT By Felix Onuah and Ahmed Kingimi ABUJA/MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) - Boko Haram militants have released 82 schoolgirls out of a group of more than 200 whom they kidnapped from the northeastern town of Chibok three years ago in exchange for prisoners, the presidency said on Saturday. Around 270 girls were kidnapped in April 2014 by the Islamist militant group, which has killed 15,000 people and displaced more than two million during a seven-year insurgency aimed at creating an Islamic caliphate in northeastern Nigeria. Nigeria thanked Switzerland and the International Committee of the Red Cross for helping secure the release of the 82 girls after "lengthy negotiations", the presidency said in a statement. |
John Oliver calls on the internet to save itself by flooding the FCC with comments Posted: 08 May 2017 07:59 AM PDT As the new FCC Chairman Ajit Pai plans to take a "weed whacker" to net neutrality regulations, John Oliver asked internet commenters everywhere for their help on Sunday. To give users an easy way to voice their displeasure of Pai's plan to repeal the classification of the internet as a common carrier, he's taken out the domain name gofccyourself.com, which is a direct link to the site to send comments. So many comments flooded in that, by Sunday, it appeared that the site was already overloaded. Back in 2014 when the FCC was considering new net neutrality rules, Oliver called for the same kind of action from his viewers on Last Week Tonight. The FCC's website crashed, Oliver's segment brought unprecedented attention to the issue, and the commission decided to reclassify internet service as a common carrier. Watch Oliver slam Pai, explain and defend net neutrality, and patriotically address Reddit commenters, Yelpers, and his own haters in this segment from Last Week Tonight. |

Experts: Convicting ex-officer in teen's death will be tough Posted: 06 May 2017 10:49 PM PDT HOUSTON (AP) — Authorities who've charged a white suburban Dallas police officer with murder in a black teenager's death face a tough task in getting a conviction as few of these cases go to trial and, when they do, juries remain reluctant to second guess an officer's decision to use deadly force, legal experts said Saturday. |

North Korea detains another US citizen: state media Posted: 07 May 2017 08:25 AM PDT North Korea has detained another US citizen for committing "hostile acts," it said Sunday, its second arrest of an American in a fortnight with tensions high between Pyongyang and Washington. The arrest of Kim Hak-Song means that the North now is holding four US citizens, with the two countries at loggerheads over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile ambitions. Kim was detained on Saturday, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported. |
Iranian supreme leader critical of 'Western-influenced' Rouhani education plan Posted: 07 May 2017 05:24 AM PDT Iran's supreme leader on Sunday criticized the government of President Hassan Rouhani for promoting a "Western-influenced" United Nations education plan which his hardline allies have said contradicts Islamic principles. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's remarks came ahead of May 19 polls, in which the president is seeking re-election. This is not a place where the faulty, corrupt and destructive Western lifestyle will be allowed to spread its influence," Khamenei told a gathering of educators, according to his website. |

Erdogan says US debates over Jerusalem embassy move 'wrong' Posted: 08 May 2017 09:36 AM PDT Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday said debates over the possibility of moving the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem are "extremely wrong" and should be dropped. US President Donald Trump had promised during his campaign to move the American embassy to Jerusalem, whose status is one of the thorniest issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Speaking at a forum in Istanbul, Erdogan said everyone should be careful on issues that concerned the status of Jerusalem, warning that even "relocating a stone" in the city could have serious implications. |

Tiny, adorable baby animal rescued from imminent doom by hero Arizonans Posted: 07 May 2017 05:59 AM PDT A starving, struggling otter in Arizona was nursed back to health after utility workers plucked it from a canal on the outskirts of Phoenix. The 4-week-old animal was dehydrated and covered with fleas when three heroes from Salt River Project noticed the otter struggling to escape the drying canal. "He was calling for his momma, we assumed," Craig Boggs, one of the utility workers, told the local Arizona news channel KPNX-TV. SEE ALSO: These animals are getting the Lego treatment because conservation is cool "It would go back under water and fight and come back up," he told the station. "He was about to give up. He was pretty exhausted." Awww! SRP crews rescued this baby otter recently and @azgfd staff nursed it back to health! Story: https://t.co/py4ER6CzPK #wildlife #rescue pic.twitter.com/sPCgy6dxIQ — Salt River Project (@SRPconnect) May 2, 2017 Otters were once found throughout the region in the Salt, Verde, Little Colorado, and Gila river systems, until early settlers all but killed them off. Wildlife officials reintroduced the web-footed swimmers into the Verde River in the early 1980s, and now otters are common throughout the entire watershed. An otter family is said to live near the artificial pool of water at Granite Reef Diversion Dam, which is where the baby otter possibly began its harrowing journey, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Remember the #otter pup our crews rescued from #Arizona Canal? She's doing well as seen in @OutofAfricaPark , weighing in at 2 lbs 9 oz.! pic.twitter.com/GykNuTENdn — Salt River Project (@SRPconnect) May 6, 2017 "While we don't know for sure, it's likely that as the canal started to draw down, mom abandoned the canal and the baby was too young to follow," Nathan Gonzalez, a spokesman for the wildlife department, said in a press release. After rescuing the struggling baby on April 20, the utility workers contacted the Game and Fish department, which transported the critter to their wildlife center in Phoenix. Workers fed the otter a trout mash mixed with kitten milk formula — and it was apparently just what the doctored ordered. Nigeria president vows support for freed Chibok girls Posted: 07 May 2017 01:50 PM PDT Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday vowed to help to 82 schoolgirls who have been freed from more than three years of Boko Haram captivity after a prisoner swap. The girls -- who were among more than 200 kidnapped in 2014 from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, northeast Nigeria -- travelled to the capital Abuja a day after their release to meet Buhari. "I cannot express in a few words how happy I am to welcome our dear girls back to freedom," Buhari said in a statement, pledging that the presidency would "personally supervise" authorities charged with ensuring the girls' "health, education, security and general well-being". |

Iran minister warns Saudi Arabia after 'battle' comments: Tasnim Posted: 07 May 2017 01:17 PM PDT Iran will hit back at most of Saudi Arabia with the exception of Islam's holiest places if the kingdom does anything "ignorant", Tehran's defense minister was quoted as saying on Sunday after a Saudi prince threatened to move the "battle" to Iran. "If the Saudis do anything ignorant, we will leave no area untouched except Mecca and Medina," Iranian Defence Minister Hossein Dehghan was quoted by the semi-official Tasnim news agency as saying. "They think they can do something because they have an air force," he added in an apparent reference to Yemen, where Saudi warplanes regularly attack Iran-aligned Houthi forces in control of the capital Sanaa. |

The tiny box that gives you free home phone service for life is Amazon’s deal of the day Posted: 07 May 2017 09:59 AM PDT Since pretty much everyone over the age of 12 has a smartphone these days, home phone service has become less and less important. Well, today is your lucky day because we're going to tell you how to get free home phone service for life so that you don't have to argue with your cable company every year when they try to hike the price of your service. The Ooma Telo gets you crystal-clear nationwide calling for free, for life. And it just so happens to be today's deal of the day on Amazon, so the cost of entry is even cheaper than it normally is. Donald Trump's health secretary defends White House party for mostly white men Posted: 07 May 2017 04:31 PM PDT Donald Trump's Health and Human Services Secretary has responded to criticism over an apparent lack of diversity at a White House party held to celebrate the US President's new healthcare bill – by claiming at least two women were present. Tom Price claimed several woman were "leading in this area of healthcare" after a photo of the gathering drew criticism for showing an almost entirely white, male crowd celebrating the passing of Mr Trump's American Health Care Act, which opponents say will have a disproportionately negative impact on women. Asked about the image during an interview with NBC's Meet the Press, Mr Price said: "Look at that picture: Congresswoman Diane Black, the chair of the Budget Committee – I was standing next to her. |
