Austria seeks to play the East-West mediator Posted: 27 Mar 2018 08:56 AM PDT In 2010, Vienna airport saw the biggest spy swap since the Cold War. Among those Russia deported was Sergei Skripal, poisoned with a nerve agent in Britain on March 4. Eight years later, Austria's refusal to join most other EU nations in expelling Russian diplomats shows it once again wants to be the conduit for East-West mediation. |

At a relatively brisk 17 hours, Qantas debuts non-stop flight between Australia and UK Posted: 25 Mar 2018 08:48 PM PDT Flying to the UK from Australia has always been an exceptionally long trip. Australian airline Qantas has made that trek less arduous with the debut of its non-stop Perth to London flight on Saturday — its travel time has been shaved down to a somewhat brisk 17 hours. SEE ALSO: You're more likely to get the flu from a sick flight attendant than a sick passenger: study It's the first time Europe and Australia have been connected with a direct commercial flight. A momentous occasion on the flight deck of #QF9#QantasDreamliner pic.twitter.com/dRTh79ZxUb — Qantas (@Qantas) March 24, 2018 Previously, flights stopped in Singapore or Dubai before continuing on. Qantas said it is able to reduce the time of the 9,000 mile (14,498km) flight by eliminating stopovers and picking paths based on the best winds for efficiency and speed. Flight QF9 flew over the Indian Ocean, where it traversed India's southern tip, then passed Oman, Iran, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Belgium before landing at London's Heathrow Airport. "This is a truly historic flight that opens up a new era of travel. For the first time, Australia and Europe have a direct air link," Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said in a statement. "The original Kangaroo Route from Australia to London was named for the seven stops it made over four days back in 1947. Now we can do it in a single leap." Carrying 236 passengers, the fuel efficient Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Qantas uses for the route has a smaller capacity than the 484 seats it has on the Airbus A380, a comparable aircraft. To boost passenger comfort, Qantas said it has designed a menu that includes "poke bowls as well as home style comfort food" which "helps the body cope better with jetlag." Boeing has also cut the cabin air pressure from the equivalent of 8,000 feet to 6,000 feet, meaning inside the plane it's "closer to conditions on the ground." OK, but what is it actually like flying for that long? Reviews appeared to be mostly positive, with passenger Mark Beasley telling to Traveller that he found the economy seat "very comfortable" despite his 188 centimetre (6 foot 1) frame. Expat Sarah Fry said the flight was "much better" than her usual route to London from Brisbane, which stopped over in Sydney then Dubai. Peter Robinson, a builder from the UK, told The Independent he found the food "ordinary," even if the flight was quicker than he expected. On Twitter, other passengers noted the issue-free flight, and the self-serve snack bar. #QF9 touchdown @londonheathrow direct from @PerthAirport after a great flight with no issues. Two charged with anti-Semitic murder of elderly French Jewish woman Posted: 27 Mar 2018 09:41 AM PDT French prosecutors have charged two people, one of them a neighbour, with the murder of an 85-year-old Jewish woman who was stabbed and whose body was then set alight in a crime being treated as anti-Semitic. Mireille Knoll, who escaped the mass roundup and deportation of Jews from Paris during World War II, was found dead in her bed in her small apartment in eastern Paris on Friday by firefighters called to extinguish a blaze. Two men are in custody on charges of murder as well as aggravated robbery and damaging property in a case investigators are treating as anti-Semitic. |

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 04:30 AM PDT The Kremlin has warned Boris Johnson that it has a "surprise" in store for those who have the "impudence" to compare Russia with Nazi Germany. In a veiled warning to the Foreign Secretary, Maria Zakharova, a spokesman for the Russian foreign ministry, claimed that the UK is using the Salisbury attack as part of a "black PR" campaign to turn the West against Russia. Describing Mr Johnson's comparisons between Adolf Hitler and Vladimir Putin as a "colossal provocation," Ms Zakharova told Russian reporters that there would be repercussions for Britain. "We have a surprise for all who have the impudence to compare, to draw parallels between Russia and the Third Reich," she added. " Let's wait until Thursday, I promise to unveil a historic gift at a press conference. The gift is for Boris Johnson and everyone. " Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova attacked the Foreign Secretary over his comments It comes after Mr Johnson compared Russia's actions to those of Nazi Germany, telling MPs last week that it was "certainly right" to compare this summer's Fifa World Cup with the Berlin Games of 1936. The Foreign Secretary went further two days later, telling reporters during a trip to Lincoln that Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 shared similarities with the invasion of the Sudetenland prior to Second World War. Mr Johnson's comments were met with a withering response from the Kremlin, which accused him of being "poisoned with venom of hate, boorishness and unprofessionalism". Meanwhile, Theresa May's decision to blame Russia for ordering the attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia has seen Western leaders rally behind Britain. Following a meeting of the European Council in Brussels last week, as many as 10 European leaders are preparing to expel Russian diplomats, including France, Ireland, Holland, Denmark. Russian spy poisoning | Read more The Prime Minister is expected to announce the reciprocal measures in an update to MPs on Monday afternoon. In the wake of growing condemnation, the Kremlin has moved from denying its involvement in the attack to suggesting that Mr Skripal's poisoning was conducted by the British intelligence services. Today, Ms Zakharova claimed that Britain could "not defend their thesis", adding that EU leaders came to their conclusions without a "single fact" or "argument" that proved Russian involvement. "[It] does not even remotely resemble a trial." Front Bench promotion - end of article |

Open-world 'Star Wars' game in development Posted: 26 Mar 2018 07:24 AM PDT A careers opportunity listed by video game group Electronic Arts confirms that its vision for "Star Wars" is online and open-world in nature. When EA's Visceral Games studio was closed in October 2017, it seemed as if Electronic Arts was envisioning a very different future for the team's "Star Wars" project. Instead of the lavish and spectacular single-player narrative adventure that had been anticipated -- a "Star Wars" reworking of PlayStation's "Uncharted" formula, from that franchise's creative director Amy Hennig -- EA was looking for something quite different. |

Researchers discover mummy in coffin thought to be empty Posted: 27 Mar 2018 12:43 AM PDT Since it was bought 160 years ago, University of Sydney archaeologists didn't think there was much to a particular sarcophagus in its collection. The coffin of one Mer-Neith-it-es sat in the Nicholson Museum, listed as empty in a 1948 handbook, while the museum database said it contained "mixed debris." SEE ALSO: Why can't anyone find Amelia Earhart's bones? Dating circa 664-525 BCE, it had been purchased by an early founder of the university, Sir Charles Nicholson, as part of 408 Egyptian objects that would form a basis for a collection. It all changed last June, when researchers needed to take a photo of the previously undocumented hieroglyphics under the coffin. That's where they discovered the remains of human feet and bones. "It was an amazing moment of discovery," the Nicholson Museum's senior curator, Jamie Fraser, said. Mixed remains within the coffin.Image: nicholson museumThe discovery led to researchers embarking on a project to document all the mummies in the Nicholson Museum. Fraser said they had never been dealt with before because of how difficult and sensitive one needs to be when dealing with human remains. "Everything we do has to be respectful to that individual inside. To go through all these mixed jumble of remains is a hugely intricate, delicate job," he added. As an old archaeological paradox goes, an excavation is at once an act of conservation and destruction. The materials would never be the same as it was found. Now, thanks to technology, researchers can capture high-resolution images of the mummy and its coffin before excavation. "Previously, the technology hasn't been there so curators have put it to one side to be dealt with later," Fraser said. "If we had done this project 10 years ago, we wouldn't have been able to do it. Now is the moment that we can actually address this." Last September, it worked with 3D scanning company WYSIWYG to create a digital model of Mer-Neith-it-es' coffin, with all its contents intact. "Researchers in 50, 100 years time will be able to use that and zoom right in to explore what's going on, to a tenth of a millimetre ... we're really super pleased with it," he said. Then in December, CT scanners were used to capture thousands of images of Mer-Neith-it-es' coffin and her remains, as well as other mummies in its collection: Horus, Meruah and Padiashiakhet. As researchers expected, the remains of Mer-Neith-it-es were mixed, but they did find ankles, feet and toes that belonged to one person at least 30 years of age. The CT scanning not only helps with documenting the mummies in great detail, but also aids archeologists in guiding its excavation. Fraser said he's only aware of an unexpected discovery like this at Switzerland's Burgdorf Museum back in 2013. That's because mummies fall into two categories: Ones that are discovered by archaeologists are kept intact, as there is no good reason to remove its contents. Others purchased at antiquities markets are often in bad condition. Mer-Neith-it-es falls in the later category. CT scan of Mer-Neith-it-es revealing the contents of her coffin.Image: Macquarie Medical ImagingThe next step, is for these four mummies to be included a purpose-built Mummy Room in the forthcoming Chau Chak Wing Museum. It's where Fraser and his team's work in the past six months will come together. "In this one room, we'll really focus on these four ancient individuals we have ... and we'll discuss what it was like for these people in the ancient world," he said. "It'll be a great opportunity to integrate all this scientific research we've done, like the CT animations and 3D models, and show them alongside the mummies." Israel to speed up process for US embassy move to Jerusalem Posted: 27 Mar 2018 10:15 AM PDT Israel said Tuesday it would not allow bureaucratic red tape to delay the controversial transfer of the US embassy to the disputed city of Jerusalem scheduled for May. Kahlon said the move was of "strategic" importance to Israel and that his staff would "do everything that is needed to respect the timetable". |

Iraq will prevent militant Kurdish attacks on Turkey: PM Abadi Posted: 27 Mar 2018 07:39 AM PDT Iraqi armed forces will prevent Kurdish militants based in northern Iraq from staging cross-border attacks against Turkey, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Tuesday. Abadi's pledge, made during a phone call with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, came a day after Ankara threatened to intervene directly if the Iraqi operation against the militants based in the Sinjar region failed. Turkey has long complained that fighters of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) are being given free rein to operate out of Sinjar against Turkish targets. |
