U.S. to announce 'concrete steps' for Venezuela crisis on Monday: official Posted: 24 Feb 2019 12:31 PM PST The official declined to comment on what the new measures would entail ahead of Pence's speech, to be delivered to a summit of the Lima Group around 10:30 a.m. EST (1530 GMT) after he meets with Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido. The meeting come after convoys of U.S. aid were blocked at the Venezuelan border by forces and gangs loyal to President Nicolas Maduro. The United States and most other Western nations no longer recognize Maduro as the country's leader. |
Venezuela aid boat reaches Curacao after reported standoff Posted: 24 Feb 2019 11:46 AM PST Willemstad, Curaçao (Netherlands Antilles) (AFP) - A boat carrying aid from the United States docked at the island of Curacao on Sunday after officials said the Venezuelan military had stopped it reaching the crisis-hit country. The shipment was part of a broader drive to take food and medicine into Venezuela in defiance of its President Nicolas Maduro. The Midnight Stone supply ship, loaded with nine cargo containers, entered the harbor on the Caribbean island 40 miles (65 kilometers) from Venezuela's coast, AFP reporters saw. |

Pope declares war on sexual abuse but victims feel betrayed Posted: 24 Feb 2019 10:04 AM PST In his closing address to the almost 200 Church leaders he had summoned to Rome, Francis said national guidelines on preventing and punishing abuse would be strengthened and the Church's definition of minors in cases of possession by clergy of pornography would be raised from the current age of 14. At least two Vatican officials have been convicted in recent years of possessing child pornography. Shortly after the conference, the Vatican said it would enact a law to protect minors and vulnerable adults within the Vatican City - the tiny enclave surrounded by Rome which is one of the few countries without one. |

Venezuela: US increasingly isolated as allies warn against use of military force Posted: 25 Feb 2019 11:32 AM PST US vice-president Mike Pence has repeated a veiled threat of military intervention in Venezuela, but Washington appeared increasingly isolated in its willingness to contemplate using force to oust President Nicolás Maduro. Both European powers and some of Donald Trump's key Latin American allies – all of whom have recognised opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela's legitimate leader – warned that they would oppose sending troops into the country. |
Posted: 24 Feb 2019 02:39 AM PST Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort broke the law so often and so "brazenly" that the office of special counsel Robert Mueller has called his criminal history "unique". The document also revealed Manafort continued to break the law even after his 2017 indictment by the special prosecutor, who is investigating Russian election interference and related matters. "For over a decade, Manafort repeatedly and brazenly violated the law," the memo states. |
Weekend beauty highlights from Milan Fashion Week Posted: 25 Feb 2019 02:02 AM PST Milan Fashion Week put a sophisticated spin on catwalk beauty over the weekend, mixing quirky details with tried-and-tested classics for Fall/Winter 2019. At Giorgio Armani the hair was twisted and pinned in rope-like coils to the head, for a child-like, textured look that was exacerbated by spiky, doll-like lashes and rosy pink lips. At Missoni a peach-hued blusher was dabbed high on the cheekbones for a flushed look that was teamed with a nude, glossy lip and -- in supermodel Bella Hadid's case -- shiny, tidy bangs. |

Venezuela: at least four dead and hundreds injured in border standoff Posted: 23 Feb 2019 07:50 PM PST At least four people have been killed and hundreds injured in a wave of violence that convulsed Venezuela's border regions on Saturday, as opposition activists tried to defy a government ban to bring food and medical supplies into the country. After the failed attempt to breach government blockades, opposition leader Juan Guaidó declared the fight would continue, and said "we must keep all our options open for the liberation of our homeland". Florida senator Marco Rubio responded to Guaidó's comments, saying he had spoken to regional leaders. |

Weak investment climate main 5G risk, not security fears: Ericsson Posted: 25 Feb 2019 04:59 AM PST Europe risks falling behind other regions in rolling out 5G mobile services because of onerous regulation and weak investment rather than any security concerns about Chinese equipment, Ericsson CEO Borje Ekholm said on Monday. High spectrum fees, regulatory uncertainty and a lack of investment were more pressing concerns, Ekholm said, alluding to calls by the United States to ban Chinese network vendors on national security grounds. "The debate here often becomes: it's the lack of technology for operators, that's what slowed down Europe. |
May Delays Brexit Vote to Buy Time as Ministers Threaten Revolt Posted: 24 Feb 2019 09:31 AM PST Theresa May pushed back the deadline for Parliament to vote on her Brexit deal, in a gamble she hopes will buy more time for negotiations but which risks inflaming the revolt against her. The British prime minister confirmed she won't bring a new divorce deal back to the House of Commons for a final vote this week. Instead, she's asking already skeptical members of Parliament to give her more time to renegotiate, promising they will get a vote by March 12. |
Pope vows 'all-out battle' saying child sex abuse like 'human sacrifice' Posted: 24 Feb 2019 07:12 AM PST Pope Francis on Sunday vowed to tackle every single case of sexual abuse by priests in the Roman Catholic Church, comparing paedophilia to "human sacrifice" in a speech that left victims cold. "If in the Church there should emerge even a single case of abuse – which already in itself represents an atrocity – that case will be faced with the utmost seriousness", Francis promised. |
Huawei shrugs off threat of US ban Posted: 24 Feb 2019 05:51 AM PST Huawei's chairman on Sunday shrugged of the risk that President Donald Trump could issue an executive order banning the Chinese telecom giant, saying the company could succeed without the US market. Guo Ping said such an order "is not necessary and should not be released" but if issued would have little impact on Huawei, which has become the leading supplier of the backbone equipment for wireless mobile networks worldwide. "In 2018 Huawei had revenues of over 100 billion dollars. |

Japan's Okinawa votes against controversial US base move Posted: 24 Feb 2019 08:46 AM PST Voters on the Japanese island of Okinawa have rejected the relocation of a controversial US military base, according to official results from a non-binding referendum Sunday. Some 72 percent voted against the move with 19 percent in favour from a 52 percent turnout, the local government said. Opponents of the relocation -- some 434,000 -- had turned out in sufficient numbers to meet the threshold required for Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki to "respect" the result of the symbolic referendum, it said. |

Controlled by the Swiss-Brazilian billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann, via the investment firm 3G Capital, and American billionaire Warren Buffett, who holds 25 percent of the company's capital, Kraft Heinz has relied on its famed zero-based budgeting approach to cost-cutting. The food industry has for several months faced a rise in logistic costs and ingredients and materials. |

This Twitter thread of dads texting the bare minimum will make you say 'OK' Posted: 25 Feb 2019 08:06 AM PST Dads are not known for being prolific texters. Indian police detain hundreds in Kashmir sweeps Posted: 24 Feb 2019 06:19 AM PST Indian authorities have detained hundreds of separatist leaders and Muslim activists in an escalating crackdown in disputed Kashmir with the region remaining on high alert following a suicide bomb attack. Police said about 400 arrests had been made over the weekend in late-night raids aimed at weakening support for groups resisting Indian rule in the Himalayan territory also claimed in full by Pakistan. The sweeps follow the February 14 attack on an Indian convoy in Pulwama district which killed 40 soldiers and was claimed by Pakistan-based Islamist group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). |
Former top U.S. security officials decry Trump's emergency bid Posted: 25 Feb 2019 09:13 AM PST Nearly 60 former senior U.S. national security officials on Monday rejected President Donald Trump's national emergency declaration, saying there was "no factual basis" to circumvent Congress to build his long-promised border wall. In an 11-page letter, former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and John Kerry, both Democrats, along with former Republican Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and others, said there was no documented emergency at the U.S. border with Mexico. Diverting funds to the project will "undermine U.S. national security and foreign policy interests," the 58 ex-officials wrote in the letter, first reported by the Washington Post. |
