YouTube’s most famous PC builder isn’t happy about Intel’s Core i9 Posted: 05 Jun 2017 06:01 PM PDT Last week, Intel dropped the biggest PC news of the last year. The new Core i9 processor series appears to be a big change from the status quo, an attempt to put insanely powerful processors within the reach of home PC builders. By and large, the PC community had the exact reaction you'd expect: excitement, followed by frantic checking of bank accounts. But for Linus Sebastian, the brains behind Linus Tech Tips and YouTube's most famous PC nerd, the reality of Intel's new product lineup doesn't match the hype.
In a fifteen-minute rant, Sebastian explains what he thinks are Intel's less-than-honest motives behind the new i9 and X-series processors and motherboards. You should watch the video to get an understanding of the technical details he's picking on, but the bottom line is that he thinks Intel cooked up the i9 platform as a response to AMD's new Threadripper series, not as an honest attempt to push home computing forwards. There's a number of little details that do point that way. Intel has hinted that a lot of the top-end performance of its new chips will be handicapped if you don't also buy Intel motherboards and Intel SSDs, which is quite blatantly not in the best interests of high-end PC builders. And then there's the problem of vaporware. Most of the really exciting stuff that Intel announced last week won't be ready until the end of the year, which is a much longer wait-for-availability than Intel usually has after the announcement of a new product. It reeks of the fact that this is a reactionary move to steal the spotlight from AMD, rather than a long-planned rollout of a new product line. Ultimately, it's the messenger that makes the message in this case. Sebastian's YouTube channel, Linus Tech Tips, is known for a fairly heavy level of commercialization and collaboration with big tech companies, including Intel. You're much more likely to see a video sponsored by Intel than one tearing Intel apart, which makes this particular rant all the more real. For such a big player to break from the script and annoy the biggest processor company on earth isn't a common occurrence, so more than ever it's worth taking note. |

A new iOS 11 trick will make joining a Wi-Fi network easier than ever Posted: 06 Jun 2017 03:28 PM PDT Apple barely scratched the surface of iOS 11 during its WWDC keynote, focusing only on some of the major software features coming to iPhone and iPad this fall. But there are plenty of exciting tricks under the hood of iOS 11, including a simpler way to join Wi-Fi networks.
Called "Wi-Fi password sharing," the feature lets you share Wi-Fi passwords with friends. The only requirement is that the iOS devices involved in Wi-Fi password sharing run iOS 11. Once that's done, you'll be able to easily set up a Wi-Fi network on a device joining it without actually having to type in the password. The user interface looks similar to the AirPods pairing process, 9to5Mac explains. When the Wi-Fi password screen is accessed on the device trying to join a network, nearby iOS and macOS devices will get a pop up that will allow users to share the password. To send a password to a new device, the iPhone or iPad that's already connected to the network must be nearby and unlocked. If someone comes over to your place and asks for the Wi-Fi password, it's likely that you're going to have your iPhone or iPad handy to complete the process. Once the password is saved on a new device, it'll remember it. That means you won't get to use the feature that much. But every time someone new comes to your home or office — or whenever you go to someone else for the first time — you'll be able to seamlessly connect to Wi-Fi. After all, that's the first thing one does when reaching a new location. |

This is probably the most covert hidden spy cam on the planet Posted: 06 Jun 2017 05:30 PM PDT Okay seriously, this is just brilliant. If you're on the lookout for a spy camera that no one — and we mean no one — will ever find, this is definitely the one. The VERKB Hidden Spy Camera looks just like a normal little wall charger that you would plug a cord into to charge your smartphone or tablet. In fact, if you plug a cord into it and connect your smartphone or tablet, it will charge. But there's also a hidden camera in there that films in 1080p and stores the footage internally. There's 32GB of storage in the device that will save up to 4 hours of full HD footage at 30 fps. This is probably the most covert spy cam on the planet that can be bought by the general public, just please don't use it for anything illegal. Here are some key details from the product page:
