Trump loved net neutrality once upon a time Posted: 15 Dec 2017 07:17 AM PST You know the joke that there's an old Donald Trump tweet expressing the opposite of every single one of his administration's policies? Well, one exists for net neutrality as well. As the FCC voted Thursday to hand control of the internet over to massive corporations, it didn't take long for Twitter detectives to find out that President Trump used to be a pretty big fan of net neutrality. In a late 2014 tweet, Trump criticized Obama (shocking) for attacking the internet, and defended net neutrality as "the Fairness Doctrine." Obama's attack on the internet is another top down power grab. Net neutrality is the Fairness Doctrine. Will target conservative media. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 12, 2014 Most interestingly, Trump claimed that a breakdown of net neutrality rules would ultimately attack conservative media. You see, he's probably right about that. As we wrote, the prospective ability for ISPs to pick and choose which content to throttle and which to prioritize might very well endanger smaller news sites like Infowars and Breitbart. It's entirely conceivable that Comcast, a major internet provider that also owns NBC, might prioritize access to NBC news at the expense of smaller, conservative media — especially if that media is publishing things that aren't terribly popular or accurate. In the meantime, Trump's family weighed in with their typical subtlety. I would pay good money to see all those people complaining about Obama's FCC chairman voting to repeal #NetNeutality actually explain it in detail. I'd also bet most hadn't heard of it before this week. #outrage — Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) December 15, 2017 WATCH: This sleeping companion is your new best friend |

'Bad news for our enemies': EU launches defense pact Posted: 14 Dec 2017 10:35 AM PST By Robin Emmott BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union nations, now unfettered by Britain's decision to quit, achieved a 70-year-old ambition on Thursday to integrate their defenses, launching a pact between 25 EU governments to fund, develop and deploy armed forces together. European Council President Donald Tusk deemed the move "bad news for our enemies". First blocked by the French parliament in the 1950s and later by Britain, which feared creation of an EU army, the pact aims to end the squandering of billions of euros by splintered defense policies. |
Weakened and divided, S.Africa's ANC to elect a new leader Posted: 13 Dec 2017 06:08 PM PST South Africa's ruling ANC party holds a conference starting Saturday to elect its new leader in a hotly contested two-way race seen as a pivotal moment in the country's post-apartheid history. The winner will be well-placed to be the next president, but the ANC has lost much popularity since Nelson Mandela led it to power in the euphoric 1994 election that marked the end of white-minority rule. President Jacob Zuma, whose reign has been marred by graft scandals, will step down as ANC chief but remain national leader ahead of general elections in 2019. |

China says war must not be allowed on Korean peninsula Posted: 14 Dec 2017 09:29 AM PST By Ben Blanchard BEIJING (Reuters) - The crisis over North Korea's weapons programs must be resolved through talks, not war, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Thursday, while U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of the danger of "sleepwalking" into conflict. Xi made his comments to visiting South Korean President Moon Jae-in after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson offered on Tuesday to begin direct talks with North Korea without pre-conditions. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tillerson's offer of direct contacts with North Korea was "a very good signal" while warning that any U.S. strike on the country would have catastrophic consequences. |

Posted: 15 Dec 2017 10:21 AM PST Israeli troops shot dead four Palestinians and wounded 150 others with live fire on Friday, medical officials said, as protests over US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital entered a second week. Most of the casualties were on the Gaza Strip border, where thousands of Palestinians gathered to hurl rocks at Israeli soldiers beyond the fortified fence. Medics said two protesters, one of them wheelchair-bound, were killed and 150 wounded. In the occupied West Bank, another area where Palestinians are seeking statehood along with adjacent East Jerusalem, medics said two protesters were killed and 10 wounded by Israeli gunfire. One of the dead was a man who Israeli police troopers said was shot after he stabbed a member of their unit. Reuters witnesses said the Palestinian held a knife and wore what looked like a bomb belt. A Palestinian medic who helped evacuate the man for treatment said the belt was fake. Palestinians -- and the wider Arab and Muslim world -- were incensed at Trump's December 6 announcement, which reversed decades of U.S. policy reticence on Jerusalem, a city where both Israel and the Palestinians want sovereignty. Gaza's dominant Hamas Islamists, which reject coexistence with Israel, called last week for a new Palestinian uprising, but any such mass-mobilisation has yet to be seen in the West Bank or East Jerusalem. There have been almost nightly Gazan rocket launches into Israel, so far without casualties. Israel has responded with air strikes on Hamas facilities, one of which killed two gunmen. The Israeli military said that, on Friday, about 3,500 Palestinians demonstrated near the Gaza border fence. "During the violent riots IDF (Israel Defence Force) soldiers fired selectively towards main instigators," the military said in a statement. Pictures from the scene show Aqal with a knife and what appears to be a suicide belt A military spokeswoman had no immediate comment on the wheelchair-bound protestor, Ibrahim Abu Thuraya. Abu Thuraya, 29, was a regular at such demonstrations. In media interviews, he said he had lost both his legs in a 2008 Israeli missile strike in Gaza. In the West Bank, the Israeli military said that about 2,500 Palestinians took part in riots, rolling flaming tyres and throwing fire bombs and rocks at soldiers and border police. Israel captured East Jerusalem, an area laden with Jewish, Muslim and Christian shrines, from Jordan in the 1967 war and later annexed it in a move not recognised internationally. Palestinians hope that part of the city will be the capital of a future independent state and Palestinian leaders say Trump's move is a serious blow to a moribund peace process. Israel has welcomed Trump's announcement as recognising political reality and biblical Jewish roots in Jerusalem. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to visit Israel, as well as Egypt, next week. (Writing by Dan Williams; Editing by Catherine Evans and Hugh Lawson) |
China angered as U.S. considers navy visits to Taiwan Posted: 14 Dec 2017 12:16 AM PST By Michael Martina and Jess Macy Yu BEIJING/TAIPEI (Reuters) - China accused the United States on Thursday of interfering in its internal affairs and said it had lodged a complaint after U.S. President Donald Trump signed into law an act laying the groundwork for possible U.S. navy visits to self-ruled Taiwan. Tensions have risen in recent days after a senior Chinese diplomat threatened China would invade Taiwan if any U.S. warships made port visits to the island which China claims as its own territory. |

6.5 magnitude quake strikes Indonesia's Java island Posted: 15 Dec 2017 11:44 AM PST A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia's main island of Java late Friday, leaving at least one person dead and rattling nerves in the capital Jakarta. There was no immediate indication of a tsunami, but authorities said they had issued a warning following the tremor, which struck a coastal region some 300 kilometres (190 miles) from the capital. National disaster mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said a 62-year-old had died in the Ciamis region in West Java after becoming trapped in a collapsed house. |

Police said she was given notice of her eviction on Monday, but refused to leave the building the next day, reports Florida TV station WKMG. A Lake County sheriff's spokesperson said a deputy tried to connect Ms Fitzgerald with members of her family and other housing facilities, but she refused. |
Trump administration issues new rules on U.S. visa waivers Posted: 15 Dec 2017 08:39 AM PST The Trump administration put new requirements in place on Friday for the 38 countries participating in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, including that they use U.S. counterterrorism data to screen travelers, officials said. The program allows citizens of mainly European countries to travel to the United States for up to 90 days without a visa. Citizens from the 38 countries are required to obtain a so-called travel authorization to enter the United States. |
