Philippines' Duterte says will snub graft probe Posted: 30 Sep 2017 09:25 PM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has said he would not cooperate with a special anti-corruption prosecutor's investigation into allegations he acquired ill-gotten wealth, vowing he would "not submit" to its authority. The ombudsman said last week it was investigating claims Duterte's bank accounts had hundreds of millions of pesos (millions of dollars) which he failed to disclose as required by law. Duterte responded by lashing out at the ombudsman, calling the agency "lousy" and saying allegations against him were "lies based on baseless" information. |

Air France passengers describe mid-air terror as engine disintegrates over Atlantic Posted: 01 Oct 2017 12:29 AM PDT French aviation investigators arrived in Canada on Sunday amid questions over the cause of an apparent engine explosion that forced an Air France airliner to make an emergency landing. Passengers reported hearing a loud bang on the Paris-Los Angeles flight, followed by vibrations that shook the cabin for 20 minutes. By the time the Airbus A380 superjumbo jetliner landed at a military airfield in Goose Bay, Newfoundland on Saturday, the cowling covering one of the plane's four engines had been completely torn off. Here's a video of the landing. pic.twitter.com/aLUoM5avLH— Jacob Soboroff (@jacobsoboroff) 30 September 2017 Pamela Adams, a passenger, said there was "a tremendous bang… like the plane hit a Jeep at 35,000 feet. We grabbed on to something and then we sat down, and the plane righted itself fairly soon." Another passenger, Daniel McNeely, said those in window seats said the entire engine exploded "in a giant fireball." Credit: AFP PHOTO / TWITTER / Sarah Eamigh Sarah Eamigh said: "The cabin started vibrating. Someone screamed, and from there we knew something was wrong. We saw the cabin crew walking through the aisles quickly, and we heard an announcement from the captain that said one of our engines had an explosion." An Air France Airbus A380 is seen during an emergency landing in Happy Valley-Goose Bay Credit: Reuters Passengers nervously joked to each other as they tried to work out what had happened, Ms Adams said. Some thought the plane had struck a bird. The forced landing revived memories of engine damage to a Qantas A380 shortly after takeoff from Singapore seven years ago. The November 2010 incident prompted the grounding of the entire Qantas A380 fleet — six airliners at the time — for more than three weeks. I talked to the passenger by the window and He said the entire engine exploded into giant fireball.— Daniel McNeely (@DanMcneely) September 30, 2017 There were no injuries among the 520 people aboard the double-decker airliner. Passengers completed their journeys to Los Angeles aboard two planes sent by Air France to Goose Bay, which is used as a emergency landing spot for transatlantic flights. |
Dunkirk-style evacuation as Vanuatu volcano pollutes drinking water Posted: 01 Oct 2017 02:37 AM PDT By Alison Bevege SYDNEY (Reuters) - Vanuatu has launched a Dunkirk-style evacuation on the northern island of Ambae as a flotilla of boats rescues islanders from an erupting volcano. The eruption has polluted many of the island's water sources leaving thousands of people in need of safe drinking water, Red Cross delegate Joe Cropp told Reuters by phone on Sunday. "It's important to get on top of it right away." The Manaro Voui volcano, the nation's largest, was seen hurling steam and rocks into the air by New Zealand vulcanologist Brad Scott who flew over the volcano on Saturday. |

Iran, Iraq plan joint drills over Kurdish independence vote Posted: 29 Sep 2017 05:58 PM PDT Iran will hold a joint military exercise with Iraq in response to the Iraqi Kurdistan region's "illegitimate" independence referendum, an Iranian military official announced on Saturday. Iran, which borders Iraq and the autonomous Kurdish region, strongly opposed the vote held Monday, fearing it would provoke separatists among its own Kurdish population. Iraq's central government has demanded the annulment of the referendum, which resulted in a huge "yes" for independence. |
Attorney: 'No doubt' OJ Simpson goes to Florida after prison Posted: 29 Sep 2017 07:14 PM PDT OJ Simpson will live in Florida after he is released on parole from a Nevada prison where he has been held for the past nine years for a robbery conviction, his lawyer said Friday. Attorney Malcolm LaVergne didn't specify where the former sport and film star would live, although Tom Scotto, a close friend who lives in Naples, Florida, has offered his home. Scotto didn't respond to messages seeking comment. "He's going to Florida," LaVergne said. "There's no doubt he's going to Florida." However, the state attorney general doesn't want Simpson to come back. Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a letter Friday to the Florida Department of Corrections, urging it to tell Nevada officials that Florida objects to Simpson serving his parole in the southern state. OJ Simpson walks out of prison after nine years 00:17 "Floridians are well aware of Mr. Simpson's background, his wanton disregard for the lives of others, and of his scofflaw attitude with respect to the heinous acts for which he has been found civilly liable," Bondi said in the letter. "Our state should not become a country club for this convicted criminal." Simpson was acquitted of the 1994 killings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles. But he was found liable for their deaths in a civil case in 1997 and ordered to pay the victims' families $33.5 million. Florida corrections officials have said in the past that they must accept the transfer if Nevada's request meets the established criteria. A Florida corrections spokeswoman, Ashley Cook, said her agency has not received a transfer request or documents about Simpson. OJ timeline He becomes eligible for release Sunday, but LaVergne said he doesn't know where or when it will happen. He expects to learn more when Simpson notifies him that he is being moved from Lovelock Correctional Center in northern Nevada. Release plans are in motion but need to be finalized for Simpson to be freed, perhaps as early as Monday in Las Vegas, Nevada prisons official Brooke Keast said. Citing safety concerns, she said the plans were not being made public. Simpson's attorney said he will begin pressing for answers if his client is not free by Oct. 8. LaVergne said he spoke with Simpson by telephone Thursday and that he is excited about his pending freedom. "He's really looking forward to the simple pleasures," LaVergne said. "Seeing his family on the outside, spending time with them, eating food that's not packaged." Simpson wants to eat steak and seafood and get a new iPhone, LaVergne told ABC's "Good Morning America." Simpson won parole in July after serving nine years of a possible 33-year sentence for his 2008 conviction on armed robbery, kidnapping and other charges. |
Turkey's Erdogan says Iraqi Kurdish authorities "will pay price" for vote Posted: 30 Sep 2017 06:17 AM PDT Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday Iraqi Kurdish authorities would pay the price for an independence referendum which was widely opposed by foreign powers. Iraq's Kurds overwhelmingly backed independence in Monday's referendum, defying neighboring countries which fear the vote could fuel Kurdish separatism within their own borders and lead to fresh conflict. "They are not forming an independent state, they are opening a wound in the region to twist the knife in," Erdogan told members of his ruling AK Party in the eastern Turkish city of Erzurum. |

In Buea, the main city in the English-speaking southwest, the streets were mostly deserted as security forces patrolled the streets including the area where the separatists were expected to gather, an AFP correspondent reported. "I can't go out, they asked us to stay home," said one city resident who identified herself just as Nancy. |

Lockheed Martin's 2013 announcement of a proposed SR-72 reconnaissance and strike drone comes against a backdrop of decades of rumor about a replacement for America's high-speed SR-71 spy plane. China says U.S. should respect concerns on Taiwan Posted: 30 Sep 2017 06:01 AM PDT The United States must respect China's concerns on Taiwan to avoid causing disturbances in Sino-U.S. ties, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told visiting U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Saturday. China considers democratic Taiwan to be a wayward province and has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control. The United States has no formal ties with Taiwan but is bound by law to help it defend itself and is the island's main source of arms. |

Women forced to remove the veil on day one of Austrian burqa ban Posted: 01 Oct 2017 11:17 AM PDT Muslim women in Austria were forced by police to remove their facial coverings on Sunday, as an anti-burqa law came into effect. The so-called 'burqa ban' prohibits facial coverings including niqabs and burqas, and also places restrictions on surgical masks, ski masks and clown make-up worn in public. Yesterday, a woman wearing a niqab facial veil, which only leaves the eyes uncovered, was seen being told to remove her veil by two police officers in Zell am See, a city south of Saltzburg. While the rule applies to some non-religious facial coverings, it is mostly perceived to be directed at the extremely modest clothes worn by a minority of Muslim women. Police officers ask a woman to unveil her face in Zell am See, Austria Credit: BARBARA GINDL/AFP/Getty Images Full veils remain rare in Austria despite the surge of migrants and refugees into Europe in 2015, but they have become a target for right-wing groups and political parties. The measures, similar to those in other European Union countries such as France, also apply to visitors even though large numbers of Arab tourists holiday in the Alpine country. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has previously indicated her support for a similar law in Germany, saying: "Our law takes precedence over codes of honor, tribal or family rules, and over sharia law." Some Muslim groups in Austria have criticised the ban. Carla Amina Bhagajati of the Islamic Religious Community in Austria said the "handful" of fully veiled women she knows of in Vienna "now are criminalized and... restricted to their homes." A model holds an information pamphlet about new Austrian restrictions Credit: JOE KLAMAR/AFP/Getty Images The legislation was brought in by the outgoing centrist government of Chancellor Christian Kern. The government said: "Acceptance and respect of Austrian values are basic conditions for successful cohabitation between the majority Austrian population and people from third countries living in Austria." However, the strong support for the new law could point towards political upheaval in Austria's general election on October 15. Austrian parties campaigning on anti-migrant messages are predicted to win and form a coalition government, reflecting a swing to the right in a country that has mainly had centrist governments since World War II. The election is expected to see the anti-immigration Freedom Party (FPOe) come second or third and potentially enter a coalition with Sebastian Kurz of the centre-right. Other measures that came into force Sunday include immigrants signing an "integration contract" and compulsory courses in the German language and "values". |

Hong Kong democracy rally marks China national day Posted: 01 Oct 2017 04:13 AM PDT Thousands of people took to the streets of Hong Kong Sunday to mark China's national day with a pro-democracy rally, and voice growing fears that the city's liberties are under threat from Beijing. Emotions have been running high in the semi-autonomous city since protests in 2014 calling for Beijing to grant fully free leadership elections. Sunday's protest, dubbed an "anti-authoritarian rally", follows the recent arrests of prominent pro-democracy activists, including a former lawmaker, that have renewed anti-China sentiment. |

Iran Wants America to Ignore Its Nuclear Ambitions Posted: 30 Sep 2017 06:28 PM PDT Once the nuclear deal expires, Iran will ironically be much better positioned to move to nuclear weapons than it was before the deal was negotiated. The starting point for any assessment of the Iran nuclear deal—or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—is the recognition that Iran remains a determined nuclear proliferator, and that the deal does not prevent it from achieving its nuclear goal. In fact, if the international community is lulled into believing that the deal "is working," this will actually provide Iran with much needed breathing space to strengthen itself economically, regionally and in the nuclear realm. |

Seahawks Take On Trump's Attacks On NFL By Launching Charity For Equality Posted: 29 Sep 2017 08:03 PM PDT While President Donald Trump continues to criticize the displays of protest and unity during the national anthem at NFL games, the Seattle Seahawks have decided to go one step further to promote equality for all. The team announced Friday that it is launching a charity fund that will benefit education and leadership programs that fight inequality and promote justice, according to its official announcement.
