China Claims to Have Developed a Radical New Stealth Technology for Its Submarines Posted: 08 Dec 2017 06:55 AM PST Unlike a conventional propulsor design—which is turned by a mechanical drive shaft—China's rim-driven system is powered by an electrical motor embedded in the propulsor's shroud. Thus, if the Chinese have managed to successfully develop a rim-driven pumpjet propulsor that works in a real world operational setting, it would be a significant development. It would mean that the PLAN is making genuine progress in developing novel submarine technologies and that it is starting to catch up. |

Genes linked to homosexuality discovered by scientists Posted: 07 Dec 2017 08:57 AM PST Genes linked to homosexuality have been discovered by scientists in the biggest ever study into the genetic basis for sexual orientation. For the first time, researchers looked at the complete genome - a person's entire DNA code - for more than 1,000 gay men and compared it to genetic data from a similar number of heterosexual males. They discovered that DNA was different for gay and straight men around the genes SLITRK5 and SLITRK6. SLITRK6 is an important gene for brain development, and is particularly active in a region of the brain which includes the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is crucial for producing the hormones which control sex drive, and previous studies have shown parts of it are up to 34 per cent larger in gay men. The researchers, from North Shore University Health System's Research Institute, in Illinois, US, also discovered differences in the TSHR gene, which is linked to the thyroid, another area which has previously been associated with sexual orientation. "Because sexuality is an essential part of human life – for individuals and society – it is important to understand the development and expression of human sexual orientation," said lead author Dr Alan Sanders. "The goal of this study was to search for genetic underpinnings of male sexual orientation, and thus ultimately increase our knowledge of biological mechanisms underlying sexual orientation. "What we have accomplished is a first step for genome wide study on the trait, and we hope that subsequent larger studies will further illuminate its genetic contributions." The genes were linked to regions of the brain previously linked to sexuality, and the thyroid Participants in the study were rated for sexual orientation based on their self-reported sexual identity and sexual feelings. Men were asked to provide DNA by blood or saliva samples that were then genotyped and analysed. Although previous studies have pointed to a genetic predisposition for homosexuality, it is the first time researchers have studied the entire genome of individuals and so is the most comprehensive assessment of the genetic basis of sexuality ever undertaken. However British experts said more work was needed before it was possible to identify 'gay genes' because the genetic differences could point to other traits shared by the homosexual respondents. For example the variations may simply predispose people to be more open or candid about their lives. British experts warned that the gene differences may simply be linked to social traits, such as being more open, and more willing to take part in a survey about their sexual orientation Credit: Andrew Fox Prof Robin Lovell-Badge, Group Leader at The Francis Crick Institute, said: "The topic of this paper is important if we are to learn more about the influence of genes on aspects of our behaviour, but this is one that is notoriously difficult to study. "Even if a gene variant does show some correlation with sexual orientation, this does not mean that the gene is in any way responsible for being gay – it just means it has some association with a trait that is more likely to found in the relatively few people involved as subjects in the study. "This could be better social awareness or being brave enough to acknowledge that they are in a minority." Gil McVean, Professor of Statistical Genetics at the University of Oxford, also added: "Sexuality is likely influenced by many different factors, including environment, experience and, likely, some aspects of innate biological variation. "I can see no major implications of this work or how it could be useful in the future. "The genetic effects are far too weak to be of any predictive or diagnostic value. All biology – including the origins of sexuality – is interesting at some level, but I see no direct applications of such research." The research was published in the journal Scientific Reports. |
Bitcoin flirts with $16,000, alarm bells ring louder Posted: 07 Dec 2017 02:32 PM PST LONDON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bitcoin rocketed to a lifetime high just shy of $16,000 on Thursday after climbing some 60 percent over one week, intensifying the debate about whether the cryptocurrency is in a bubble about to burst. The largest U.S. cryptocurrency exchange struggled to keep up with record traffic as the price surged, with an upcoming launch of the first bitcoin futures contract further fuelling investor interest. Proponents say bitcoin is a good medium of exchange and a way to store value, much like a precious metal. |

Al Franken resigns: Yahoo Newsroom readers' strong reactions Posted: 07 Dec 2017 12:11 PM PST "What kind of fool blames others for his own failure?" "A disgraced unfunny democrat...a perfect resume for SNL and/or Colbert!" Al Franken announced Thursday that in the "coming weeks" he would be resigning from the Senate. Yahoo Newsroom readers couldn't wait to weigh in, sharing their strong reactions. Franken's resignation comes on the heels of a series of allegations from women accusing him of sexual harassment and misconduct. It is about the people of Minnesota." What do you think? Did Franken do the right thing? Is he setting an example? Who will fall next? Join the conversation in Yahoo Newsroom. |

Pelosi said Democrats were seeking funding for fighting opioid addiction, veterans, the children's health program, community health centers, disaster funding and a solution for young undocumented immigrants to the United States. If a short-term funding measure is not approved by the Republican-led Congress and signed by Republican President Donald Trump, all but the most essential parts of the federal government will shut down. |

Qualcomm CEO sees 'no path to value' in Broadcom tie-up Posted: 07 Dec 2017 07:49 AM PST The comments came days after Singapore-based Broadcom escalated its efforts on a $130 billion bid by proposing a slate of directors to unseat the Qualcomm board of directors. Mollenkopf, speaking at an event hosted by The Economic Club of Washington, said that "we always have discussions" on potential tie-ups but that Qualcomm's future is well-positioned as an independent company. Special Report: How Monsanto's GM cotton sowed trouble in Africa Posted: 08 Dec 2017 06:03 AM PST By Joe Bavier BOBO-DIOULASSO, Burkina Faso (Reuters) - In 2000, farmers in Burkina Faso, Africa's top cotton grower, were desperate. U.S. seeds and pesticide company Monsanto proposed an answer: a genetically modified strain of cotton called Bollgard II, which it had already introduced in America and was marketing worldwide. GM was established in large-scale farming in South Africa, but not among the smallholders who produce most African cotton. |
This is the best response to someone who asks you where you're 'really' from Posted: 07 Dec 2017 06:50 AM PST How many times do people get asked the uncomfortable question: "No, but where are you really from?" because of their ethnicity? SEE ALSO: Donald Trump just retweeted anti-Muslim videos from a British extreme far-right group It still happens quite a lot, despite it being a form of "microaggression," according to some social scientists. A similar incident just occurred to London Mayor Sadiq Khan during his historic walk across the border between India and Pakistan. BBC reporter Karl Mercer awkwardly asked him whether the symbolic visit felt "like coming home." The mayor replied: "Nah, home is south London mate." Then he added: "But it's good to be in Pakistan. It's good to come from India, home of my parents and grandparents." People criticised the reporter for the question, while praising Khan's sassy response: Who asked Sadiq Khan, currently in Pakistan, "how does it feel coming home?" Utterly pathetic. cc @meghamohan — Julia Merryfarlane (@juliamacfarlane) December 7, 2017 "How does it feel to come home?""Nah, home's Sarf London, mate."LOVE SADIQ KHAN. https://t.co/NCq7dU6qwx — Ali Catterall (@AliCatterall) December 7, 2017 I sincerely doubt anyone would ask Iain Duncan Smith "how it feels to be home" on a work visit to Japan. Sadiq Khan was born and raised in South London. To even ask the Mayor of London that question is utterly shocking in its audacity. — Oz Katerji (@OzKaterji) December 7, 2017 Iain Martin, a columnist for The Times, defended the question, saying it wasn't weird: The Sadiq Khan "home" question not weird. Scots, Welsh, Irish get it all the time. I call Scotland home, although London is my home. — Iain Martin (@iainmartin1) December 7, 2017 But people pointed out that people of colour get told to leave Britain by racists, something that's unlikely to happen to a white Scot: Isn't the context important? People of colour get told to "go home" ie leave Britain by racists, no one says that to a white Scot/Welsh — Fatima Manji (@fatimamanji) December 7, 2017 Scots get it more than might think! But of course, yes, are racist idiots. Not odd for Brits with roots abroad to celebrate it. — Iain Martin (@iainmartin1) December 7, 2017 As a Brit with a foreign surname, I often get asked "where are you from". It was a good response from Sadiq Khan. — Leon Emirali (@LeonEmirali) December 7, 2017 Are you being serious? Calling Scotland "home" in your case makes sense because you were born there, and it's not a foreign country. This is a British man of Asian heritage being wrongly told a foreign country he's never grown up is "home" (which he obviously rejects). — Owen Jones (@OwenJones84) December 7, 2017 WATCH: Forget 3D printing, molding is all the rage right now |

Judge sides with Tesla, slams dealer association in Missouri Posted: 07 Dec 2017 06:00 AM PST Since Tesla began selling electric cars directly to customers throughout the U.S., the electric-vehicle maker has had to play franchise-law whack-a-mole in multiple state courts. On Tuesday, Tesla scored a decisive victory when the Missouri Court of Appeals reversed a lower court's ruling that would have left Tesla without a state dealer license. In the court's ruling, the judge criticized the tactics of the Missouri Auto Dealers Association, Tesla's opponent. |
