US warns Hong Kong on illicit North Korea trade Posted: 24 Jan 2018 06:48 AM PST A senior United States official warned Hong Kong authorities Wednesday they must stop the city being used as a "safe harbour" for illicit trade with North Korea, in violation of United Nations sanctions. The warning came weeks after a Hong Kong-flagged ship was seized in South Korea for transferring oil products to another vessel. The UN -- at the urging of the US -- has imposed a series of sanctions against North Korea aimed at tightening the economic screws on Pyongyang over its missile and nuclear programme. |

Venezuela's presidential battle begins, Maduro favorite Posted: 24 Jan 2018 03:28 PM PST By Andrew Cawthorne and Andreina Aponte CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's presidential election race has begun with favorite and incumbent Nicolas Maduro signaling a nationalist, "anti-Trump" campaign while his demoralized foes scramble to find a viable candidate for a vote they predict will be unfair. Critics of the 55-year-old Maduro, who succeeded Hugo Chavez in 2013, say he has ruined a once prosperous oil economy, turned Venezuela into a dictatorship and skewed the election system to perpetuate power for his Socialist Party. Government officials say they are fighting a U.S.-led right-wing conspiracy determined to end socialism in Latin America, hobble Venezuela's economy, and steal its oil wealth. |

Anger swells in Pakistan as suspect in child killer case remanded Posted: 24 Jan 2018 06:40 AM PST Angry Pakistanis called Wednesday for the public execution of a suspect accused of raping and murdering a girl in a case that enraged the country and stoked fears a serial killer was preying on children. The suspect, Imran Ali, was remanded in custody for 14 days by an anti-terrorism court in Lahore one day after his arrest over the rape and murder of six-year-old Zainab Fatima Ameen in the Punjab city of Kasur. Zainab's murder weeks earlier sparked outrage across the country with riots erupting in Kasur as thousands swarmed police stations and set fire to politicians' homes, while Pakistanis took to social media demanding action. |

The six-day campaign against the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) has seen Washington's fellow NATO member Ankara attacking a US-allied force, even raising fears of military confrontation between two alliance powers. |

Trump administration presses 'sanctuary cities' for documents Posted: 24 Jan 2018 02:02 PM PST By Sarah N. Lynch WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's administration on Wednesday escalated its battle with so-called sanctuary cities that protect illegal immigrants from deportation, demanding documents on whether local law enforcement agencies are illegally withholding information from U.S. immigration authorities. The Justice Department said it was seeking records from 23 jurisdictions -- including America's three largest cities, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, as well as three states, California, Illinois and Oregon -- and will issue subpoenas if they do not comply fully and promptly. |

"But we stopped it as volcanic tremors were detected," a Japanese police official told AFP. |
Doomsday: Why a War with Russia Would Go Nuclear (And Kill Billions of People) Posted: 25 Jan 2018 07:47 AM PST A NATO counter-offensive would be bloody and fraught with escalatory risk—but it's one of the probable outcomes of a Russian invasion. In that eventuality, Russian conventional forces—of which only a portion are well trained and well equipped—would likely be severely damaged or even destroyed. After all, Moscow has expressed concerns in the past that regime change by the West is an all too real danger. |
