Second Hong Kong WW2 bomb in a week sparks evacuation Posted: 31 Jan 2018 07:03 AM PST A second wartime bomb was discovered at a construction site in the heart of Hong Kong within a week, prompting thousands of people to evacuate on Wednesday and stores to shutter. Police sealed off parts of the busy Wan Chai district and ferry services crossing the Victoria Harbour were suspended as experts worked to unearth the explosive, an operation that would likely continue overnight. The bomb was found at the same construction site along the harbour front as a 450-kilogram explosive that was successfully defused on Saturday. |

The flight path of the Russian jet forced the US Navy aircraft, which was flying in international airspace, to end its mission prematurely, a US official said. "This is but the latest example of Russian military activities disregarding international norms and agreements," the US State Department said in a separate statement. |

Broadcasters shut as Kenyan opposition leader takes symbolic oath of office Posted: 30 Jan 2018 04:07 AM PST By George Obulutsa NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenyan authorities shut down television and radio stations on Tuesday as supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga watched him take a symbolic presidential oath on the Bible in a Nairobi park in a direct challenge to President Uhuru Kenyatta. Odinga's supporters insist that he, not Kenyatta, is Kenya's legitimate leader, and that Kenyatta's election was neither free nor fair. Kenyatta's election victory in August was annulled by the Supreme Court over irregularities, but he then won a re-run, which Odinga boycotted over a failure to revamp the electoral commission, and was sworn in for a second term in November. |

The Hong Kong government acknowledges its inability to cope with the problem, saying that it lacks the land to develop an effective recycling industry. |
